  Erinnerungen eines Europäers

  Harry Graf Kessler lässt uns in seinen Erinnerungen in die aristokratisch-bourgeoise Welt des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts eintauchen. Sein Memoirenband war das erste einer auf drei Bücher angelegten autobiographischen Reihe, die leider unvollendet blieb. Hier beschreibt er seine Kindheits- und Schuljahre und seine Studien-zeit, in der er seine Liebe zu Nietzsches Schriften entdeckte, nach Amerika reiste und beinahe ganz natürlich mit den politischen Entscheidungsträgern seiner Zeit - Kaiser Wilhelm I. (der auch Taufpate seiner Schwester war) und Otto von Bismarck - verkehrte. Diese Nähe schränkte jedoch keineswegs seine Objektivität oder Beobachtungs- gabe ein: Besonders über Bismarck fällte Kessler ein scharfes Urteil.In Frankreich, Großbritannien und Deutschland zu Hause, hatte Kessler durch seine Eltern früh Kontakt zur Berliner Hofgesellschaft und wuchs in eine Welt der Kultiviertheit und des Glanzes hinein, die bald von einer finsteren Epoche überschattet werden sollte.Besonders seiner Mutter ist diese Autobiographie gewidmet, eine kosmopolitische und weltgewandte Frau, mit irisch-britischen Wurzeln, die in den besten Kreisen verkehrte und die der Sohn sehr verehrte. Der Band erschien erstmals 1935 unter dem Titel Gesichter und Zeiten und bereits ein Jahr später in französischer Übersetzung als Souvenirs d'un Européen: "Erinnerungen eines Europäers".
