Les fleurs du mal, in english The Flowers of Evil, is a volume of French poetry by Charles Baudelaire. First published in 1857, it was important in the symbolist and modernist movements. The poems deal with themes relating to decadence and eroticism. Baudelaire dedicated the book to the poet Théophile Gautier, describing him as a "parfait magicien des lettres françaises" ("a perfect magician of French letters").The author and the publisher were prosecuted under the regime of the Second Empire as an "outrage aux bonnes mœurs" ("an insult to public decency"). As a consequence of this prosecution, Baudelaire was fined 300 francs. Six poems from the work were suppressed and the ban on their publication was not lifted in France until 1949. These poems were : Lesbos, Les Métamorphoses du Vampire (or The Vampire's Metamorphoses), for example. These were later published in Brussels in a small volume entitled Les Épaves (Scraps or Jetsam). Upon reading The Swan (or Le Cygne) from Les Fleurs du mal, Victor Hugo announced that Baudelaire had created "un nouveau frisson" (a new shudder, a new thrill) in literature. Those poems, The Flowers of Evil, are a master piece of french literature. Language: English. Narrator: Stuart Walker. These days, swimming may seem like the most egalitarian of pastimes, open to anyone with a swimsuit - but this wasn't always the case. In the 19th century, swimming was exclusively the domain of men, and access to pools was a luxury limited by class. Women were (barely) allowed to swim in the sea, as long as no men were around, but even into the 20th century they could be arrested and fined if they dared dive into a lake. It wasn't until the 1930s that women were finally, and reluctantly, granted equal access. This is the story of the women who made that possible, a thank you to the fearless 'swimming suffragettes' who took on the status quo, fought for equal access, and won. Part social history, part memoir, Swell uncovers a world of secret swimming in the face of these exclusions and shines a light on the 'swimming suffragettes'. It celebrates some amazing achievements, some ridiculous outfits and some fantastic swimmers who challenged the stereotypes of what women are capable of. It's also the story of how Jenny eventually came to be a keen swimmer herself. Swell is a joyful hymn to the sport and an exploration of why swimming attracts so many women. Ultimately it is a book dedicated to our brilliant swimming foremothers who collectively made it possible for any woman to plunge in with alacrity, anywhere we choose. ungekürzt. Language: English. Watching Carmella tells what happens when green-eyed Coach Hernandez is charged with being chaperone to the gorgeous, young Latin hockey star Carmella. Carmella and Milana's biggest mistake, when they eventually awaken, is to head back to their room together. They have missed the morning team meeting for the Uruguayan Olympic field hockey team, and when Coach Gloria Hernandez spots them together, she puts two and two together. Both young women look exhausted, and they have not even showered! They are certainly too tired to play in the match against Japan that day. Angry and indignant, Coach Hernandez announces they will be fined the equivalent of $2,000 each ,and she would be moving into Carmella's room that evening. "If the mice are going to play," as she puts it, "then the cat cannot afford to stay away!" Carmella, 20, acceptesthese disciplinary measures without complaint. Later, confined to her room, she finds out that Uruguay has lost their qualifying game that day, and she knows that the absence of Milana, 28, and herself damaged the team. All she wants to do now is get some sleep and try to make things up to her teammates in the following game. So it is with some relief that Carmella retires to bed at eight o'clock, sure in the knowledge that Milana's subversive and exciting influence has been forcibly removed, with Coach Hernandez standing guard like some kind of old-fashioned chaperone. Yet for some reason, Carmella wakes in the night and opens her eyes. Immediately she shuts them tight! She cannot quite believe what she has seen. Across the room Coach Hernandez is lying wide awake in her bed, her large eyes staring intently at Carmella! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Beverly Klondike. Who is acting as judge, jury, and executioner? Someone is running a campaign of retribution against people with lax morals. Kidnapping, arson, and blackmail are bad enough, but then the head of a convicted paedophile is found wedged onto a road signpost at a location where ancient public executions took place. Various local businessmen and politicians have been blackmailed with incriminating evidence, fined £20,000 to encourage them to improve their behaviour. Sophisticated techniques have been used to surveil the victims and to attack them, including poisons, guns, and explosives, implying that the perpetrators have military or Secret Service training. The suspect in a series of violent raids on small businesses also appears to be ex-army. The efficient attacks speak of reconnaissance beforehand, and the lone raider strikes swiftly, incapacitating their target, before fleeing on a motorcycle with the loot. Where is the raider living? The death of the child abuser escalates the investigation. Neil has mixed feelings about the death of a paedophile, but murderers need to be caught. What is motivating the Sin Killers — financial gain or retribution?  One of their victims owns a chain of massage parlours. Seemingly unfazed by the pressure, his young son was kidnapped then abandoned, and he vows revenge. His henchman, Cleaver, is a veteran of London gang wars in the 1960s, his heavily scarred face proof of his own capacity for violence with blades. Interference from a controversial government minister appears to confirm who the suspects are, while muddying the waters. Devon and Cornwall Police are being used to clean up mistakes made by the secret service. Noah and Nina Shrike are ex-MI5 agents gone rogue and likely to turn terrorist, as they punish the sins of their former masters.  As Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kettle hones in on his suspects, he becomes a target for their retribution, overpowered by an exotic poison. Bringing Up Bébé meets Last Child in the Woods in this lively, insightful memoir about a mother who sets out to discover if the nature-centric parenting philosophy of her native Scandinavia holds the key to healthier, happier lives for her American children. When Swedish-born Linda McGurk moved to small-town Indiana with her American husband to start a family, she quickly realized that her outdoorsy ways were not the norm. In Sweden children play outside all year round, regardless of the weather, and letting young babies nap outside in freezing temperatures is not only common - it is a practice recommended by physicians. In the US, on the other hand, she found that the playgrounds, which she had expected to find teeming with children, were mostly deserted. In preschool, children were getting drilled to learn academic skills while their Scandinavian counterparts were climbing trees, catching frogs, and learning how to compost. Worse, she realized that giving her daughters the same freedom to play outside that she had enjoyed as a child in Sweden could quickly lead to a visit by Child Protective Services. The brewing culture clash finally came to a head when McGurk was fined for letting her children play in a local creek, setting off an online firestorm when she expressed her anger and confusion on her blog. The rules and parenting philosophies of her native country and her adopted homeland were worlds apart. Struggling to fit in and to decide what was best for her children, McGurk turned to her own childhood for answers. Could the Scandinavian philosophy of "there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes" be the key to better lives for her American children? And how would her children's relationships with nature change by introducing them to Scandinavian concepts like friluftsliv ("open-air living") and hygge (the coziness and the simple pleasures of home)? McGurk embarked on a six-month-long journe ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ann Richardson. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/027179/bk_adbl_027179_sample.mp3.
