Mark Kurlansky's first global food history since the best-selling Cod and Salt; the fascinating cultural, economic and culinary story of milk and all things dairy - with recipes throughout.  According to the Greek creation myth, we are so much spilt milk; a splatter of the goddess Hera's breast milk became our galaxy, the Milky Way. But while mother's milk may be the essence of nourishment, it is the milk of other mammals that humans have cultivated ever since the domestication of animals more than 10,000 years ago, originally as a source of cheese, yogurt, kefir, and all manner of edible innovations that rendered lactose digestible, and then, when genetic mutation made some of us lactose-tolerant, milk itself.  Before the industrial revolution, it was common for families to keep dairy cows and produce their own milk. But during the 19th century mass production and urbanization made milk safety a leading issue of the day, with milk-borne illnesses a common cause of death. Pasteurization slowly became a legislative matter. And today milk is a test case in the most pressing issues in food politics, from industrial farming and animal rights to GMOs, the locavore movement and advocates for raw milk, who controversially reject pasteurization.  Profoundly intertwined with human civilization, milk has a compelling and a surprisingly global story to tell, and historian Mark Kurlansky is the perfect person to tell it. Tracing the liquid's diverse history from antiquity to the present, he details its curious and crucial role in cultural evolution, religion, nutrition, politics and economics.  ungekürzt. A tale of intrigue and inheritance, meddling and manipulation, sisterhood and self-improvement. When Lady Catherine de Bourgh learns of Mr. Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth Bennet, her wrath sets in motion a series of events at Hunsford Parsonage, which embroil Darcy and Elizabeth in a family fracas that grows more complicated daily. The shades of Rosings Park are soon polluted by the shocking transformation of its new mistress and her guests, as well as secrets of the past and schemes for the future.Appearances and alliances shift amidst the chaos wrought by a well-intentioned house party, and Darcy and Elizabeth must finally face their feelings for one another despite mounting obstacles and misunderstandings of every kind.Set chiefly in Kent and spanning the short space of just a month, this stand-alone variation begins the morning after Mr. Darcy's failed proposal at Hunsford. From there, chaos quickly erupts and the lives of three strong young women tangle together in a day-by-day journey of growth, sisterhood, and ultimately romance, in the wake of tragedy. ungekürzt. From the golden age of radio comes 12 episodes of this popular and realistic police procedural. The Lineup was a hard-boiled drama. Like Dragnet, it realistically showed police doing their jobs. The show always began with a police sergeant ordering suspects to stand at attention so that the victim, behind one-way glass, could try to identify the criminal. While the lineup was rarely the key to solving the case, it did give the show a rhythm and also allowed for humor in the interrogation of the suspects by the sergeant. Bill Johnstone, best known as one of the voices of The Shadow, starred as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie. Wally Maher originally played Sergeant Matt Grebb, until the actor's death. His character was replaced by Sergeant Pete Carger, played by Jack Moyles. The supporting cast members were a who's who of Hollywood radio actors, including Howard McNear, William Conrad, Barton Yarborough, Hy Averback, and Herb Butterfield. The series began as a summer replacement for The FBI in Peace and War in 1950, but soon got its own time slot and would remain on radio until the spring of 1953 before making a successful transition to television. Twelve episodes included in this collection are "The Grocery Store Matter" (1 Feb 51), "The Silver Swan Case" (22 Feb 51), "The Molly about Seven Case" (27 Feb 51), "The Pointless Pierson Polemic Polarity" (5 Sep 51), "The Senile Slugging Case" (12 Sep 51), "The Fur-Flaunting Floozy" (26 Sep 51), "The Wild, Wild Woman Case" (4 Oct 51), "The Frivolous Forger Fracas" (11 Oct 51), "The Nicely Nixed Nixon Case" (18 Oct 51), "The Pixie-Picker Pickle Case" (8 Nov 51), "Bentley's Boo-Boo Case" (15 Oct 52), and "Buggered Bunco Boys" (12 Nov 52). hwæt, another Beowulf translation? Not exactly...

Welcome to Denmark's Heorot Hall, where King Hrothgar invites to his banquet table everyone but Grendel, Saxon's cradle-made monster. Dissing this ur-outsider initiates a predictable and monstrous backlash, a Mediæval fracas that only the eponymous Beowulf can quash. Sailing across the whaleroads, he arrives to quell and queltch and quatch the Grendel beast.

Beowulf, that still-recognizable hero, embodies a blank function, a motive-driven yet motiveless megastar. He's the young, fit, male, self-sacrificing protagonist-interloper who will fight any monster to protect his people. Or to defend strangers. Or to gain a reputation. Or because he just really wants to...

In her rendering of Beowulf, Nicole Markotic offers a rollicking cover song of fantastical text. These pages will surprise readers as they introduce new ways to embrace, challenge, or click with Anglo-Saxon heroics. Writing original poems, Markotic de-stories the story of one man, who mostly does not play well with others, who fights monsters (and defeats their mothers, too), and who practically invents the poetic tradition of entitled bravery.

Upending the tale with her fresh and enchanting style, Markotic gives a nod to previous translations, winks at canonical critics, bares historical biases, all while gifting transmogrifying pages that will whet your whimsy! "Nicole Markotic takes the original English-language epic and reprocesses it. That is, she rereads, rewrites, reimagines, rethinks, and retells it, all at the same time. The result is the story re-understood. The phrasing and incantation is Markotic's own (and our era's own), deployed with deliciously textured and diverse registers of language. Blake saw infinity in the palm of his hand. Markotic puts a millennium in yours." Wayde Compton, author of The Outer Harbour "Beowulf, with its unfathomable monsters and monster-slaying hero, its bro world of mead, boasting, weapons, and booty, remains a stubbornly relevant template for much of our contemporary scene. Nicole Markotic's After Beowulf handles all this with dazzling sprezzatura. It is a pleasure to follow the narrating, condensing, commenting voice as it sashays through a range of verbal registers from high Olsonic to comic book pratfall, snark to scholarship. After Beowulf provides an up-to-date reading of Beowulf through the eyes of a feminist poet. And it continually suggests what things might be like after Beowulf." Bob Perelman, author of Jack and Jill in Troy "The collision of ancient and colloquial language creates bursts of humour as my dude Beowulf makes his way into the banquet hall and beyond. Linger here to experience the aesthetics of poetry in action: vibrant and intensely moving, we feel the wrenching pain of Grendel's mother. Markotic's language is thick with meaning and light with humour: a creation of the most projective of verses." Jacqueline Turner, author of Flourish
