These are the voyages of the starship A.S.F. Willful Child. Its ongoing mission: to seek out strange new worlds on which to plant the Terran flag, to subjugate and if necessary obliterate new life-forms, to boldly blow the... And so we join the not-terribly-bright but exceedingly cock-sure Captain Hadrian Sawback and his motley crew on board the Starship Willful Child for a series of devil-may-care, near-calamitous and downright chaotic adventures through "the infinite vastness of interstellar space". The New York Times best-selling author of the acclaimed Malazan Book of the Fallen sequence has taken his lifelong passion for Star Trek and transformed it into a smart, inventive, and hugely entertaining spoof on the whole mankind-exploring-space-for-the-good-of-all-species-but-trashing-stuff-with-a-lot-of-high-tech-gadgets-along-the-way, overblown adventure. The result is an SF novel that deftly parodies the genre while also paying fond homage to it. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: MacLeod Andrews. The tale of a young Green Beret medic, Vietnam combat veteran with the top secret Studies and Observations Group (SOG) who was recruited by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).Schofield worked five and a half years providing medical support for the Hmong and other Hill Tribes who fought the CIA’s secret war in Northern Laos, and was among the last Americans to leave SE Asia in May 1975.It was a surreal time and place that would be impossible to even imagine today.“Schofiled’s book reflects a genuine love for the Hmong and their culture, as well as a vast knowledge of their efforts during our ‘secret war’ in Laos in the 1960s and 1970s. Read and learn some actual facts; not overblown rhetoric from another barstool hero.” (Stephen R. Leopold, colonel, SF, USA, ret.)“Schofield’s book will be a welcome, informative addition to recent books released on the early days of Green Beret history in Southeast Asia. De Oppresso Liber." From acclaimed author Phil Stamper (The Gravity of Us and As Far as You'll Take Me) comes a poignant coming-of-age, contemporary middle grade debut novel about finding your place, using your voice, and the true meaning of pride. Perfect for fans of Rick by Alex Gino and The Best at It by Maulik Pancholy.Jake is just starting to enjoy life as his school's first openly gay kid. While his family and friends are accepting and supportive, the same can't be said about everyone in their small town of Barton Springs, Ohio. When Jake's dad hangs a comically large pride flag in their front yard in an overblown show of love, the mayor begins to receive complaints. A few people are even concerned the flag will lead to something truly outlandish: a pride parade.Except Jake doesn't think that's a ridiculous idea. Why can't they hold a pride festival in Barton Springs? The problem is, Jake knows he'll have to get approval from the town council, and the mayor won't be on his side. And as Jake and his friends try to find a way to bring Pride to Barton Springs, it seems suspicious that the mayor's son, Brett, suddenly wants to spend time with Jake. But someone that cute couldn't possibly be in league with his mayoral mother, could he?

Finally: an evidence-based, reassuring guide to what to do about kids and screens, from video games to social media.Today's babies often make their debut on social media with the very first sonogram. They begin interacting with screens at around 4 months old. But is this good news or bad news? A wonderful opportunity to connect around the world? Or the first step in creating a generation of addled screen zombies? Many have been quick to declare this the dawn of a neurological and emotional crisis, but solid science on the subject is surprisingly hard to come by. In The Art of Screen Time, Anya Kamenetz - an expert on education and technology, as well as a mother of two young children - takes a refreshingly practical look at the subject. Surveying hundreds of fellow parents on their practices and ideas, and cutting through a thicket of inconclusive studies and overblown claims, she hones a simple message, a riff on Michael Pollan's well-known "food rules": Enjoy Screens. Not too much. Mostly with others. This brief but powerful dictum forms the backbone of a philosophy that will help parents moderate technology in their children's lives, curb their own anxiety, and create room for a happy, healthy family life with and without screens.  ungekürzt. There are three things you should know about Quinn Sullivan: 1) He is madly in love with Janie Morris 2) He's not above playing dirty to get what (or who) he wants 3) He doesn't know how to knit. After just five months of dating Janie, Quinn - former Wendell and unapologetic autocrat - is ready to propose marriage. In fact he's more than ready. If it were up to Quinn, he would efficiently propose, marry, and beget Janie with child all in the same day - thereby avoiding the drama and angst that accompanies the four stages of prematrimony: engagement; meeting the parents; bachelor/bachelorette party; and overblown, superfluous wedding day traditions. But Janie, much to Quinn's dismay, tosses a wrench in his efficacious endeavors and challenges him to prove his devotion by going through the matrimonial motions, no matter how minute and mundane. Will Quinn last until the wedding day? Or will he yield to his tyrant impulses? Regardless, one thing is for certain: Quinn Sullivan will have to learn to expect the Spanish Inquisition (i.e., the unexpected) if he plans to have and keep Janie Morris as his wife. You must listen to Neanderthal Seeks Human first before listening to this book. This book is written in first person with alternating POVs (Janie Morris and Quinn Sullivan, but more Janie than Quinn). ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jennifer Grace, Sebastian York. The media constantly bombard us with news of health hazards lurking in our everyday lives. But many of these hazards turn out to have been greatly overblown. According to author and epidemiologist Geoffrey C. Kabat, this hyping of low-level environmental hazards leads to needless anxiety and confusion on the part of the public as to which exposures have important effects on health and which are likely to have minimal or no effect. Kabat approaches health scares as "social facts" and shows that a variety of factors can contribute to the inflating of a hazard. These include skewed reporting by the media, but also, surprisingly, the actions of researchers who may emphasize certain findings while ignoring others, regulatory and health agencies eager to show their responsiveness to the health concerns of the public, politicians, and advocates with a stake in a particular outcome. By means of four case studies, Kabat demonstrates how a powerful confluence of interests can lead to overstating or distorting the scientific evidence. He considers the health risks of pollutants such as DDT as a cause of breast cancer, electromagnetic fields from power lines, radon within residences, and secondhand tobacco smoke. Tracing the trajectory of each of these hazards from its initial emergence up to the present, Kabat shows how publication of more rigorous studies and critical assessments ultimately helped put the hazard in perspective. ungekürzt. Don't break any rules, even if they make no sense.Sam is back and better than ever! Just kidding. His life still sucks. Dragged into the video-game-like world of Somerset, he is constantly having his patience and sanity tested by the world's sheer tropiness and unoriginality. Like, for example, how Princess Willow of the East was kidnapped just a few hours after asking for his help in saving her kingdom. Or, how seemingly no one, including the all-powerful Adventurers Guild, can do anything about it.  Worse than a world that seems to have no end of horrible naming schemes, overplayed story lines, and moronic knights with a penchant for long and overblown speeches about justice, Sam has to deal with a talking dog who seems to enjoy belittling him at every possible opportunity. Add that to the fact that all he can eat day in and day out is stew, and Sam is left with some serious anger issues. Good thing there are all those bunnies around!  Dear Listener,  This is a LitRPG book containing stat sheets, leveling, and epic loot. This book contains excessive amounts of profanity. Like, a lot, (seriously, I mean it!) and some content that may not be suitable for children. So, if you thought the last book was too much, do everyone a favor and avoid this one. If you still complain about cursing in the reviews after this, it's all on you, pal!  Sincerely, Sam ungekürzt. In this collection, best-sellers, award winners, and emerging voices lead us through the murky, overblown, hungry mind-set of youth. From parental dysfunction to new sexual experiences to dealing with illness and death, the coming-of-age story has never been so newly and complicatedly rendered. Our childhood fears are on full display in this collection. Imaginary characters come to life, something evil lurks in the night, bullies taunt us, parents stand in our way, and ghosts from the past haunt our adult lives. Accurate, raw, and moving, these stories show children teetering on the cusp of messy adulthood, and we see our own early days and desires. In the opening story, a young man's vision of Roy Rogers - his abusive, ailing father's childhood hero - leads him through his family's tough past. Clark Blaise's eerily rendered Cold War America comes next, where a teenage boy faces an enemy much closer to home. Miranda Beverly-Whittemore takes us further into the darkness with an entrancing, uncomfortable story that shows a teenage girl commiting a desperate act. And in Dana Kletter's "Night Song", a mother and daughter become entwined with the same drug-addled trumpet player. The collection ends with Katherine Vaz's surreal "Swan Sister", in which a girl imagines away her baby sister's illness and death until the memory begins to haunt her when she herself becomes a mother. ungekürzt.
