Agatha Christie wrote The Mysterious Affair at Styles during the midst of World War I. The book was published in 1920 and became extremely popular because of the well-grounded plot and interesting characters. The novel is set at Styles Court, a wealthy estate in England during the war. The estate's owner, Mrs. Cavendish, had inherited the estate as well as vast sums of money from her late husband. She goes on and remarries Alfred Inglethorp, and they live together with Mr. Cavendish's two sons, John and Lawrence Cavendish. John's wife, Mary, and Cynthia Murdoch also reside at the lavish estate. Mrs. Cavendish, now called Mrs. Inglethorp, is surrounded by people who will inherit the money and estate upon her demise. Not surprisingly, she dies of poisoning, and foul play is suspected. This mystery novel is filled with twists and turns that involve the inspector, Hercule Poirot, who must look for clues as to who was responsible for Mrs. Inglethorp's death. Since the crime might affect the carrying out of the will, Poirot is under pressure from the entire household to figure out the truth. But just before she died, Mrs. Inglethrop is heard arguing with someone and is rumored to have made another will that would overrule any previous wills. However, that will is nowhere to be found. Through ingenious reasoning and careful planning, the culprits are finally caught, all thanks to the inspector. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Andrea Giordani. A collection of famous transcendentalist essays from Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Nature, Self Reliance, Walking, and Civil Disobedience. In Nature, Emerson put forth the foundation of transcendentalism, a belief system that espouses a non-traditional appreciation of nature. Transcendentalism suggests that the divine, or God, suffuses nature, and suggests that reality can be understood by studying nature. Self Reliance contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow their own instincts and ideas. Walking is a Transcendental essay in which Thoreau talks about the importance of nature to mankind, and how people cannot survive without nature, physically, mentally, and spiritually, yet we seem to be spending more and more time entrenched by society. For Thoreau walking is a self-reflective spiritual act that occurs only when you are away from society, that allows you to learn about who you are, and find other aspects of yourself that have been chipped away by society. "Walking" is an important canon in the transcendental movement that would lay the foundation for his best known work, Walden. It has become one of the most important essays in the Transcendentalist movement. In Civil Disobedience, Thoreau argues that individuals should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican-American War. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Preece. The 5 Second Rule is a guide to transforming people and directing them towards taking action, changing their behavior, and taking on the challenges of life head-on without worry. It was devised by Mel Robbins in his book The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage, in which she explains the science behind the 5-second rule, how it works, and how to apply it to the important areas of life.According to Robbins, individuals only have five seconds to act on an impulse before they hesitate. In order to overrule one’s hesitation, he/she must commit to acting by the time he/she counts down 5-4-3-2-1. Robbins refers to these moments as “push moments.” These are the times when you have a thought about something such as approaching someone new or speaking up in a meeting. If individuals act rather than think, they will grow more courage and gain confidence. As individuals begin to use this starting ritual in their everyday lives, they will begin to see changes in their personal and professional lives. This starting ritual is a way to combat self-doubt and fear by making yourself physical move forwards. The book has become a best seller among other non-fiction books in the United States. Property fundamentally marks how we as individuals are related both to other individuals and to society at large. In its strongest form, property absolutely excludes others from possessing, using, or in any way controlling what we own. However, others have insisted that basic human necessity (e.g. hunger) may overrule the power of individual property. The English philosopher John Locke offered a theory of property against which all others have since been measured. Locke said that personal property is a natural right, given by God. One line of his argument emphasizes the human need for self-preservation; here property rights are seen as a necessary instrument for peacefully distributing nature's bounty. Second (and more famously), Locke defends the earliest formation of property in a series of four steps: (1) every person owns his or her self and capacity to work (i.e. his or her labor); (2) by mixing what one owns (labor) with nature's common property, we make other things our own; (3) the consent of others is irrelevant to this process of securing property; and (4) "as much and as good" of nature's bounty must be left for others. David Hume criticized Locke, insisting that property is not a natural right but rather a social convention that reflects self-interest and the desire to protect what we own. Jeremy Bentham insisted that only government (rather than society in general) can bestow property rights. Property ultimately involves personal control and security, as often opposed to other individual interests and to the overall interest or advantage of society. This tension is seen in issues like slavery, abortion, euthanasia, organ donation, government regulation, taxation, the power of eminent domain, welfare, and a variety of coercive social programs. ungekürzt.
