Sacred Games: A Mystery of Ancient Greece , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 738min
It is the Olympics of 460 BC. Nico's best friend, Timodemus, is a competitor in the pankration, the deadly martial art of ancient Greece. Timo is the hot favorite to win. His only serious rival is Parmonos, from Sparta. When Parmonos is found beaten to death, it is obvious Timodemus must be the killer. The Judges of the Games sentence Timodemus to be executed in four days' time. Complicating everything is the fact that Athens and Sparta are already at each other's throats. If an Athenian is found to have cheated by murdering a Spartan, it will be everything the hawks in Sparta need to declare open war. Nico and his partner in sleuthing, Diotima, have four days to save their friend and avert a war. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Erik Davies. Saleh Stevens' History of MMA: From Rome to Today , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 43min
Told by a former MMA combatant whose promising career came to an unexpected end due to a freak sparring session injury, Saleh Stevens' History of MMA: From Rome to Today covers the many critical influences that ultimately shaped the practice of mixed martial arts as it is understood today. In his first book, the author begins by offering his insight into the role of the earliest practitioners of pankration, a sport that was included in the original Olympic Games. Starting with a centuries-old sport and style of combat mythologized in the stories of a number of Greek and Roman heroes, Stevens goes on to detail how MMA came to grow out of a variety of concepts and philosophies coming from seemingly disparate sources. From Japan to England, Brazil, the United States and beyond, the history of MMA frequently crosses international borders and is often adopted with great zeal by those who encounter a teacher capable of sharing the principles of an approach to martial arts that favors adaptability over rigidity. In presenting the history of MMA all the way through the contemporary era of UFC and The Ultimate Fighter, Stevens offers a number of interesting anecdotes in addition to the detailed overviews aimed at providing the listener with the proper background and context. Whether it is President Theodore Roosevelt's regular practice of engaging in MMA-style training sessions at the White House or Muhammad Ali's boasting in advance of his match with Antonio Inoki, Saleh Stevens' History of MMA: From Rome to Today succeeds in providing an entertaining and informative look into the people, organizations and events leading up to MMA's rapid growth in popularity over the last decade. ungekürzt. The Pan-Hellenic Games in Ancient Greece: The History of the Olympics and the Other Major Greek Competitions , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 131min
“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.” (Epictetus)“Many are the sights to be seen in Greece, and many are the wonders to be heard; but on nothing does Heaven bestow more care than on the Eleusinian rites and the Olympic games.” (Pausanias)The Pan-Hellenic Games is the collective term for the four major sports festivals held in ancient Greece. These include the Olympic Games, held in honor of Zeus at Olympia every four years; the Pythian Games in honor of Apollo, held at Delphi every four years; the Nemean Games, held to celebrate Zeus and Heracles at Nemea near Corinth every two years; and the Isthmian Games, honoring Poseidon at Isthmia every two years. The Olympiad, a period of four years, was one of the main ways the Greeks measured time. The Olympic Games were used as a starting point, effectively year one of the cycle. The Nemean and Isthmian Games were both held in different months in year two, followed by the Pythian Games in year three, and the Nemean and Isthmian Games again in year four. The cycle then repeated itself, with the Olympic Games starting the sequence again. Being structured in this way ensured that individual athletes could participate in all of the games. Competitors came from all over the Greek world, including the Greek colonies, as well as Asia Minor and Spain, and the only main issue seems to be the expense. Competitors had to be relatively affluent to afford training, transportation, lodgings, and other costs associated with taking part. Women and non-Greeks were mostly prohibited from participation, except on extremely rare occasions when an exception was made. Perhaps, the most famous was when the Roman Emperor Nero was allowed to participate in the Olympics. The main events at all of the games were chariot racing, wrestling, boxing, the pankration, the stadion, various other foot races, and the ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stephen Platt.
