Raymond Depardon, Communes
Communes is a photographic essay by Raymond Depardon exploring the villages of France's Mediterranean inland region. Its 80 black-and-white photographs were taken by Depardon in the summer of 2020, after France's first lockdown, and cover the departments of Aveyron, Lozère, Gard and Hérault. These villages are timeless havens of peace, where tranquility and cool prevail. Witnesses to history, they were threatened by the 'Nant concession', a shale gas extraction project, but the inhabitants protested and the project was abandoned in 2015. The villages, with their cobbled streets, old houses with jagged facades and rustic construction, are once again thriving. The photographs are accompanied by a text by Salomé Berlioux, president of the association Chemins d'Avenirs, an association that accompanies and promotes thousands of young people from isolated areas. Berlioux is also the author of Les Invisibles de la République. Comment sauver la jeunesse de la France périphérique? (Robert Laffont, 2019) and Nos campagnes suspendes. La France périphérique face à la crise (Editions de l'Observatoire, 2020).- Shop: buecher

Start a Blog: Single Wide Female: The Bucket List, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 65min
Note to self - stop asking intense people for help. All I wanted was a blog: just a nice, simple, straightforward blog where I could express the occasional opinion and post a photo of a kitten. How hard can that be? Oh no, Little Miss Intensey-Pants next door decided that I needed a blog where I poured out all of my emotions in real time to the entire world via satellite. It didn't matter how much I protested; she had a vision, and I was going to achieve her vision - or else. It's a battle of wills that I might just lose. I know the world needs one more opportunity to see cute kittens dangling from Christmas trees, but LMIP insists I should be baring my soul, pouring out my heart, and giving away my innermost secrets. Let the battle commence. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gwendolyn Druyor. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/033695/bk_acx0_033695_sample.mp3. Left Field: The Memoir of a Lifelong Activist , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 572min
David Wilson has been a gaucho, a teacher, an artist's agent, a documentary filmmaker, and playwright, but above all, he has been a lifelong political activist. In the 60s he marched to Aldermaston. In the 70s he protested against the Vietnam War and apartheid. In the 80s, with the Lesbian and Gay Liberation Front, he delivered food to striking miners. More recently, he has been active in the anti-war movement. As the cofounder of War Child, he was instrumental in bringing a mobile bakery into war-torn Bosnia. In 1995 the charity gained prominence with the release of the Help album. Contributors included David Bowie, Brian Eno, Paul McCartney, and Sinéad O'Connor. Help captured the world's attention and brought the healing power of music to young people whose lives had been devastated by war. Left Field is an engaging and humorous memoir which will inspire not only Wilson's generation, but also today's young people who are campaigning for a better, fairer world. ungekürzt. The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 556min
Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) has been called the Father of African American Studies. In The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861 (1919), he documents the ways that education took place among African Americans from the beginning of slavery to the Civil War. There was fierce opposition to teaching slaves to read and write, while some slave owners thought it important for slaves to learn book- and record-keeping. Others wished for slaves to become educated enough to read the bible and become Christians; in this, Catholics and Quakers were at the forefront. At one stage, the South made draconian laws against educating slaves, specifically targeted to prevent Northerners from educational initiatives, which hampered the efforts of Abolitionists. As regards higher education, the debate about whether to teach a trade or a liberal education was ongoing, and White trade unions protested the potential competition. Woodson’s work is a thorough investigation of the history of education among Afro Americans. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rodney Louis Tompkins. Letter from Birmingham Jail , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 51min
Audie Award Finalist, Original Work, 2013 April 16th, the year is 1963. Birmingham, Alabama, has had a spring of nonviolent protests known as the Birmingham Campaign, seeking to draw attention to the segregation against blacks by the city government and downtown retailers. The organizers longed to create a nonviolent tension so severe that the powers that be would be forced to address the rampant racism head on. Recently arrested was Martin Luther King, Jr.... It is there in that jail cell that he writes this letter; on the margins of a newspaper he pens this defense of nonviolence against segregation. His accusers, though many, in this case were not the white racist leaders or retailers he protested against, but eight black men who saw him as "other" and as too extreme. To them and to the world he defended the notion that "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dion Graham. The Luddites: The History and Legacy of the English Rebels Who Protested Against Advanced Machinery During the Industrial Revolution , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 94min
Between the 18th and early 19th centuries, Britain experienced massive leaps in technological, scientific, and economical advancement. This powerful period has since been immortalized as the great Industrial Revolution, during which Britain became a formidable force that boasted unmatched economical growth, drastic changes in living conditions, and even the emergence of a neglected social class. Vast portions of rural lands were transformed into interconnected, complex, and multitasking cities. Dozens of innovative inventions and products were churned out in bulk and sold to the masses for the first time ever. Some of the greatest thinkers and creators ventured forth from the shadows. Scientists, engineers, merchants, and manufacturers alike were at the height of their prime, nurtured by a culture that embraced the vision of growth, progress, and industrial unity. The Industrial Revolution saw Britain rise to the top and become the envy of the world's most prestigious nations. At the same time, the pivotal era was far from perfect, featuring a dark underbelly and an army of unsung heroes. It was American writer and futurist Alvin Toffler who once called technology “the great growing engine of change”. The 18th-century German linguist Johann Gottfried von Herder was another proponent of enlightenment and technological progress. “Nothing in Nature stands still,” said von Herder. “Everything strives and moves forward.” One would be hard-pressed to find anyone today that would disagree with these sentiments. Those whose opinions suggest otherwise are often thoughtlessly dismissed, and those who hold them, ridiculed as tin-foil-hat sporting paranoids or pretentious “hipsters”. But what happens when the very instruments meant to help people begin to put lives at stake? Meet the Luddites, a 19th-century brotherhood of rebels who vowed to annihilate every last one of the newfangled spinning machines that cost thousands their jobs. The Luddites' rio ungekürzt. Stolen Girls: Survivors of Boko Haram Tell Their Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 300min
One night in April 2014, members of the terrorist organization Boko Haram raided the small town of Chibok in northeast Nigeria and abducted 276 young girls from the local boarding school. The event caused massive, international outrage. Using the hashtag "Bring Back Our Girls", politicians, activists, and celebrities from all around the world - among them First Lady Michelle Obama and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai - protested. Some of the girls were able to escape and award winning journalist Wolfgang Bauer spent several weeks with them as they recounted their ordeal. In Stolen Girls, he gives voice to these girls, allowing them to speak for themselves - about their lives before the abduction, about the horrors during their captivity, and their dreams of a better future. Bauer also examines the historical and political background of the Islamist terror in the heart of Africa, showing how Boko Haram works and describing the damage it has done to the fragile balance of ethnicities and cultures in one of the world's most diverse regions. ungekürzt.
