    Als im August 1811 der zweite Band von Kleists Erzählungen - in ihm unter anderem die "Die Heilige Cäcilie oder die Gewalt der Musik" - erschien, verfasste Wilhelm Grimm eine lobende Rezension, in der er das "außerordentliche Talent" von Kleist hervorhob. Gleichzeitig konnte er jedoch nicht umhin, folgende kritische Anmerkung hinzuzufügen: "Überhaupt ist es etwas auffallend, daß die sämtlichen Erzählungen ins Gräßliche gehen, und ein überwiegender Hang zum Düstern und Schauderhaften ist an der Wahl des Stoffes wie an der Behandlung nicht zu verkennen." Dass vielleicht gerade dieses Grässliche und Schauderhafte einen ganz besonderen Reiz ausübt, dass von ihm die Ambiguität eines "tremens et fascinans" ausgeht, die uns auch heute noch anzieht und gefangen nimmt, darauf deutet auch die Tatsache hin, dass Grimm noch Jahre später, nämlich 1817, dem befreundeten Pfarrer Bang Kleists Erzählungen, "die ich besonders wegen des Michel Kohlhaas und der heiligen Cäcilia schicke, in welchen sich das herrliche Talent des unglücklichen Verfassers recht zeige", als Lektüre empfiehlt. deutsch.
