"Writing this book is my way of showing that perhaps there's a lot more to see when we take in perspectives we never previously considered. Because, after all, we are not all the same, but when you think about it, why should we be?"Nedum Onuoha was not a typical footballer and never wanted to write a typical footballer's autobiography. While other members of the Manchester City Academy were working towards their compulsory qualifications in the canteen at the training ground, Nedum was in school, studying for his GCSEs, then A-Levels, a rare player that combined a formal education with his rise to the first team of one of the most famous clubs in world football. He was there for the seismic changes at Manchester City, and when they won their first Premier League title - as an opposition player having left the club just four months previously.Kicking Back is more than just a tale of those he played alongside, and under. His views on Stuart Pearce, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Roberto Mancini and Harry Redknapp are characteristically forthright of a man who's now a notable broadcaster for the BBC, ESPN and more; but this is also a book about identity. Nedum's has been shaped by the experience of being a black man of Nigerian descent growing up - initially as an outsider in Manchester - and then living in the US during the Black Lives Matter protests; and also of a black footballer that faced horrific racist abuse in his career. While his assessment of how football and society have failed the black community is damning, he is also able to provide insights into his family life that are deeply personal, particularly the recollections of his mother, who passed away in 2012.In his book, Nedum reflects on those moments on the pitch that shaped his career, but also those off it that formed the opinions he shares so frankly. His story is not just that of a footballer, but a black man who has spent a lot of his life in environments where there are few faces like his own.

Percy Tau grew up with seven siblings and a single mom in the mining town of Witbank. For Percy and his family, life is tough, as their mother struggles to make ends meet. But there is one thing that brings the Tau boys together: soccer. At the Mmagobana Primary School, they quickly make a name for themselves on the soccer team. Despite the boys’ enthusiasm for the game, Percy’s mom is against him playing soccer. She wants him to get a ‘real job’ - after all, she doesn’t want to see her son struggle in life. But Percy persists and is invited to join the Sundowns Youth Academy. Here he meets Pitso Mosimane, the Sundowns coach who will teach him all about what it takes to become a professional footballer. In March 2017 Percy’s life changes forever: he is called up to play for Bafana Bafana and is named as the leading goal scorer of the season. But just when all is going so well...heartbreak: Percy’s brother is killed in a car crash. Old fears from his childhood come rushing back as his mother blames their misfortune on soccer. But, through it all, the family pull together in their support for one another. Then, one day, a call comes: Percy is offered a position to play for Brighton - one of the biggest deals ever offered a South African footballer. What will the future hold for one of the brightest stars in South African soccer? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tebogo Lekhuleni. Messi might be the most skilful, and Ronaldo might have the best shot, but according to FIFA it's 16-stone Adebayo Akinfenwa who's the strongest footballer in the world. With a larger-than-life personality to match, it's no wonder 'The Beast' has become an icon, attracting millions of social media followers, launching his own clothing label, and still banging in the goals for Wycombe Wanderers. With such fame and adoration, it's easy to forget that Bayo is one of the hardest-working footballers around. His mental strength has had to be equal to his physical. Told by English clubs he was 'too big' to play football, he joined Lithuanian team FK Atlantas as a teenager, where he faced widespread racial abuse. A career of grafting in the lower leagues of English and Welsh football followed, with spells at Barry Town, Torquay, Swansea, Gillingham, Northampton and AFC Wimbledon. Bayo's charisma and knack of scoring vital goals made him a fan favourite at each. His last-ever kick for the Dons was a penalty at Wembley to help win the club promotion. 'I think I'm technically unemployed,' he told an interviewer after the final whistle. 'So any managers hit me up on the WhatsApp and get me a job!' Inspiring, entertaining and full of character, this is the story of how Akinfenwa became a true cult hero and the never-give-up attitude that made him the biggest footballer on the planet. ungekürzt.
