Resonating across more than five centuries, expressions of personal piety and prayer fill these works by a quartet of Franco-Flemish composers, all born in the 15th century, and their modern-day colleagues, Estonian Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962) and British-Norwegian Andrew Smith (*1970).

In April of this year, Donato Dozzy took a set of mouth harps back to his parent's house in the Italian countryside and set about exploring the possibilities of that most basic of instruments. The mouth harp had been calling to Dozzy ever since childhood, when he had discovered the marranzano on a holiday in Sicily with this parents at the tail end of the 1970s. Almost four decades later, Dozzy had begun to see in this peculiar, ancient sound, the roots of the music he'd been making and playing in clubs all these years. It was time to find out how far he could trace it all back. The Loud Silence is the result of those explorations, an accompanied deep-dive into childhood memory, social history and the roots of psychedelia. Recorded indoors and outdoors, half-way up mountains and on the edge of the Mediterranean sea, the record is meditative but also powerful. Dozzy has distilled his ideas into an incredibly intimate sound, one that invites an inverted sort of exploration, pushing you further and further into your own head. Each track maintains an inviolable central pulse, while delicate, fluttering sounds hint at vast spaces that might open up at any minute - they're just waiting for you to connect with them. Field recordings hover below the resonating harps, adding to the mysterious atmosphere. Tracks like 'The Loud Silence' and 'Downhill to the Sea' are wrapped up in simple rhythms, their strict throb drawing you deeper and deeper into the primitive sound. Where so much of today's trance-inducing music is mechanical, born of grids and microchips, The Loud Silence pulses with the presence of the human body. As Dozzy says, The hand gives the tempo, together with the breath. It's all about the mouth, the ears, the hands. The organic physicality of the sound, made in concert with the body itself, generates a primal response in the listener, an undeniably visceral understanding, an empathetic resonance. When you play such an instrument, you'll feel all your bones vibrating to the sound in a sort of chain reaction! says Dozzy. It becomes an emotional and physical clean up. In Italy, one of the ways to call the jew's harp is 'scacciapensieri', which literally means 'It kicks thoughts away'. The sound and its effects also carry with them a sense of history, of community and of social ritual. Trance states, whether shamanic rituals in the Amazon or DJ sets in dark night-clubs, have always relied on a social element, a communal understanding of what is going on, what is expected to happen. The Loud Silence is a personal album that speaks to this communal experience, that wonders implicitly why these ancient ideas of society and community have been so devalued today. In a moment where all individuals seem to act egoistically and not as a tribe, says Dozzy, This music gives me the sense of continuity with the past. Throughout history, states of altered consciousness have been religious, political, poetical or nihilistic, but rarely ever just a means of innocent entertainment. There is something inherently transgressive about removing the shackles of individual will and succumbing to something larger than yourself. Giving up your base desires and ambitions in favour of a sound, to submit yourself to something as simple and fleeting as vibrations in the air, the sound of some metal resonating in another person's mouth, is a way to communicate with the part of you which is in everyone else too. It's a way to reach both in and out at once, to the heart of what it is to be human on this planet. At a time when nations are burning and whole continents are on the edge of breaking apart, recognising the bonds that bring and hold people together, recognising that what we share is what truly defines us, couldn't be more important. The Loud Silence is Dozzy's second solo album, and it sees him return to Further Records, where he released his first solo LP, K, in 2010. On the surface, there might seem to be a world of difference between this record and K, but they share the same sense of dynamic movement within a limited sphere. It's not minimal exactly - it's hard to describe such a rich sound as minimal or reduced in any way - but it is music that gets the most out of a small, well-chosen set of tools. Like on the recent album Sintetizzatrice, a full-length collaboration with singer Anna Caragnano, and a forthcoming Further LP from Aquaplano studio partner Nuel, the ability to make a single element - voice, synthesizer, mouth-harp - the centre of a musical world is enthralling. The Loud Silence is a testament to this eagerness to unearth the historical and social resonances of lone instruments, to see what traditions, what emotions, lie hidden in the most familiar sounds. Anyone who has followed Dozzy's work over the years, whether the celebrated Voices from the Lake collaboration with Neel, the otherworldly mixes he's done for MNML SSGS and electronique.it, or particularly his album of Bee Mask remixes for the Spectrum Spools label, will see that The Loud Silence is a continuation of a life-long fascination with sound and its potential to bring people, times and places together. It's one more stunning chapter in a musical career that has never shirked the task of digging deep into the sounds that move us. This record is the first in a series exploring the depth of one instrument - next up in the series a solo record from Nuel that explores the Ekdahl Polygamist. TRACKS: 1. Personal Rock (5:03) 2. Cross Panorama (4:10) 3. The Loud Silence (4:09) 4. The Net (4:34) 5. For Arnaud (3:58) 6. Downhill to the Sea (6:08) 7. Concert for Sails (3:44) 8. Exit The Acropolis (6:04)

Those who - even just rudimentary - have followed the evolution of electronic music over the last twenty years, know about the outstanding importance of von Oswald's timeless classics like Domina, M-4 or the whole Basic Channel series. Insofar, Cocoon Dark Dub is maybe the nicest birthday present at all, and an absolute honour for our label. (Sven Väth) So, initially, it's the heartbeat of Dub Techno that pulsates through a lonely piano and noise fractals, and club world keeps its breath for a good eight minutes. However, the Compilation J literally puts out all the stops over the following 110 minutes playtime and shows what modern electronic dance music has to offer in these times. The Dial impresario Pantha Du Prince from Hamburg is celebrating crystalline ice dance (Bolder), while Cécille label head Nick Curly, with his sensual Tribal House, is feasting the most compact form of Disco Boogie that one can imagine (Keep On). With SBooty, the Kompakt ambassador DJ Koze, also from Hamburg, is flabbergasting the audience by combining virtually incompatible elements. Improvised horn licks are whirring through a flickering resonating body while the bass kick is filling up the tropic ambient air. However, the invariably Cocoon policy to always support interesting newcomers becomes visible in the contribution of Basti Grub from the Rhine Neckar area, whose label Höhenregler is well-known for several musical insider tips in the past. Sick is ascending into your brain immediately with its melodic high-frequency hook line and mysterious vocals, matching perfectly to the melancholic playfulness of the tracks by Guy Gerber. Deep Dish member Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire and the Parisian Popof are the ones to prove impressively that you virtually can't go wrong with stringent Hypno Techno and a diaphragm-shaking bass drum. Besides the above-mentioned, the J compilation holds such well-known producers like Loco Dice, Extrawelt, Reboot and last not least long-time Cocoon companion Ricardo Villalobos, whose 12-minutes-long dance on the echo-filled Humusweg once again draws the bow to the Basic Channel sound from another side, and leaves much room for own visions in between the pulsing metronome of the bass line. In any case, the history of electronic dance music has not been outtold so far. TRACKS: 1. Moritz Von Oswald - Cocoon Dark Dub 2. Basti Grub & Komaton - Sick 3. Pantha Du Prince - Bolder 4. Mathias Kaden - Rave Strikes Back 5. Nick Curly - Keep On 6. DJ Koze - Sbooty 7. Loco Dice - La Bicicletta 8. Dubfire - Rejekt 9. Popof - Roxy 10. Extrawelt - Simpleton 11. Ricardo Villalobos - Humusweg 12. Reboot - The Unspoken Word

The Dish Dogs' New Album Cleans Up The first time I heard, "Wish I was a Bird" (Track 7) as it was being previewed as an early release to the Dish Dogs eponymously titled album, I thought it was a great version of a cover. However, this is original Dish Dog material and the perfect illustration of classic Dish Dogs music - original, familiar and entertaining. The arrangement is brilliant and the blending of dark and light voices allows the song to soar. The confidence of delivery of the song allows the delivery to be sharp, direct and fun. And so it goes with every track on the album. Chris Howdyshell's latest incarnation, The Dish Dogs, have produced a genre bending sound marrying folk, rock, blues and country. Is this what we call Honky-Tonk? By going into the studio the greatest question The Dish Dogs had to answer was 'could their high-energy, audience-participation, ensemble LIVE production' translate to a studio album where the spotlight shifts to the lyrics, rhythms and harmonies, while showcasing the extreme talent that drives the existence of the Dish Dogs?' The musicianship across the board is incredible - loud, driving, precise and innovative. The Dish Dogs are a mix of older statesmen - Doug Pitts (electric guitar and guitjo), younger guns - Josh Vana (electric guitar, harmonica, vocals), Kyle Oehmke (bass), and Michael Bowman (drums, mandolin, vocals), and the middle guard of Lara Mack (vocals) and Chris Howdyshell (acoustic guitar, vocals) - fronting the band. The sound is familiar in a warm, cozy, 'I know these guys way.' Playful music gives way to serious technical guitar rift, soaring harmonica and vocal blends. Michael Bowman's crisp voice acts as a clear counterpoint to Howdyshell's seasoned croon. Mack lends a lightness and whimsical dance to the harmonies with her vast range. All of these proceedings are anchored to the Rock 'n' Roll traditions by the relentless bass guitar of Kyle Oehmke. Oehmke is technically gifted without predictability. He is a steady hand, when the melodies leave the playing field, acting as an eventual landing strip for the bluesy beats and soulful dirges. The main criticism is the arrangement of the album. The album seems to start at the point 'Dry Here for Weeks' and 'It's Not Your Fault,' which coincidentally are the newest offerings for this album. 'Leaf Pile' and 'She's An Artist' are fine songs, but do not catapult the album or showcase the talents of the ensemble. The newest tracks, possibly by virtue of being new, sound fresh and demonstrate the best of Howdyshell's talents as a lyricist. No doubt this is grown up music raised on a couple of generations of the masters - Bob Dylan, The Greatful Dead, Allman Brothers Band and Tom Waits. The album's artwork (courtesy of Bryan Vana) hints at something sad about the music. A broken down one time old reliable station wagon lays wasting in a field with the Appalachians looming beautifully in the distance. Is this our fate? The album is cathartic and revels in Pitts' guitar guile and pure feast of energy incited by Howdyshell's maniacal vocals. But this experience is not a purely happy one. If the album is life in miniature, then according to the Dish Dogs - the best it will get is 'sitting in a big Leaf Pile', because in order to get over your problems, you've got to shut yourself away as evidenced in 'Dry Here For Weeks' - a sad song about alcoholism where it seems like the best days are over. Some solace is provided by knowing 'It's Not Your Fault', but the truth is, it is your fault and relationships are an ebb and flow of chance and confidence and self-change. 'Whiskey Momma', (a great addition to the album and a tip of the cap to local musician Rob St. Ours) is a cynical song about an absence of faith and celebrating life in the present moment. Tom Weights, obvious in it's acknowledgment, is out of place and is the weakest song on the album compared to it's similarly themed 'Then You'll Know' and 'I Got A Little More', which are ironic and twisting, simultaneously captivating and heart-wrenching musings on life bringing us once again to that scrapped car in that anonymous yard in the Shenandoah Valley (see Album Cover). The Dish Dogs are a Live band to be experienced in person and this album delivers as near to the front row as you could be. -Ken Gibson From the ashes of the band Red River Roller Coaster, a new breed of rock 'n' roller has emerged. One could describe them in a language common only to poor, laboring restaurateurs. You know the guy in the back that nobody talks to, that might only get tipped out a couple bucks, but has made sure your silverware is spotless? I'm talking about the dish dog. Singing the blues quietly to himself... no more. Patiently hoping some big shot record company guy will be in the dining room and suddenly hear the faint sounds of love and pain resonating off the plates and cups....no more. These five guys and a gal are out and about sharing their stories of pain, suffering, love and brief moments of bliss, that create our existence. True songs of real-life situations, that's what you'll hear on this CD. Songs about what is happening to all of us. 'The band's songs are musically diverse, with the musicians dabbling in electric guitar, banjar, harmonica, tambourine, drums, mandolin, acoustic guitar and the glue that ties it all together: the vocals.' -Rocktown Weekly The Dish Dogs are a pretty eclectic bunch. Lead singer, acoustic guitarist, writer, and composer Chris Howdyshell, leads the band with a heavy dose of fibber jabber. With Doug Pitts and Joshua Vana taking turns on Lead Guitar, you truly get a guitar-heavy album. Michael Bowman, a classically-trained guitarist, sits down on drums this time, adding mandolin on a couple tracks as well. (Little fingers)Kyle Oehmke plays electric bass and Lara Mack provides the gorgeous harmony. The Dish Dogs are known for their great live performances, so check out the CD and then find 'em in the hills and valleys of Virginia for a show.

Every now and then a writer will come along who brings a fresh look at the things we've seen and heard before so many times. As a writer and musician, Wes Pickering does just that. Fusing together insightful lyrics with memorable melody lines, his songs are both inspiring and easily related to. 'I write from what I live out day to day: my friendships, my joys, my struggles, he says. There's a certain part of me that doesn't let me sleep well at night unless I have surrendered everything that is on my mind. Writing music allows me to do just that.' Both comforting and penetrating, his passionate lyrics easily find their way into mind and the heart of each listener. 'I think that songwriting demands a certain level of vulnerability from the author, a willingness to admit faults and show your own idiosyncrasies. The best songs, in my opinion, are often the ones that others can look at and think to themselves, 'hey, I could have written that: I've felt that way too.'' His live performances are both energetic and down-to-earth. 'It's like the icing on the cake after you've spent so much time making a record," says Wes. "You get to showcase what you've worked on and crafted and see an immediate reaction from the audience.' Whether it's with a full band or just a solo show, Wes's performances are always crowd pleasers. They are also an encouragement to those who hear his words as he sings and explains the songs during the concert. 'Sometimes I play a song and I can tell that the words are really resonating with the audience. It's always an important part of the show to stop and say Let me tell you why I wrote these things. I've found that talking about God, family, and friendship are just as important as singing about them. That's a huge part of what people take home with them, whether I say it from the stage or after the show one on one. ' Wes is alum of Belmont University where he earned a BBA from the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business. While there he was president of the Belmont Songwriters Association, a group of artists dedicated to perfecting their craft. Brought up into a family devoted to full time overseas missions work, he spent most of his childhood years in the Netherlands. This is where he first began exploring music on the piano and percussion. In the late 90s he moved to North Carolina and began playing guitar and writing songs. Since then Wes has been writing nonstop. In 2007 Wes recorded his much anticipated second record "Poetry and Patience." The songs are a testament to his ability to connect with his audience, penning thoughts that resonate with every member of his generation. Musically and lyrically matured, "Poetry and Patience" has officially marked Wes as an artists that's here to stay and is destined for great things. If you meet Wes, you can easily tell that he's excited about sharing his stories and songs with anyone who will listen. And the more he writes and plays, the more people are listening. Wes Pickering's music is, without a doubt, a breath of fresh air for every listener.
