Cyro
Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey and Cyro Baptista's Cyro, originally released on Incus in 1988. When Cyro Baptista moved to New York in 1980 from his home city of São Paulo, he brought with him an arsenal of percussion instruments, including the cuica (friction drum), surdo (the booming bass drum associated with samba), berimbau (single-string bow with resonating gourd), and cabasas galore, in the next few years deploying them most notably in numerous ensembles curated by John Zorn, who helped set up this studio session in 1982. As you might expect from someone whose infectious grooves have graced the work of Herbie Hancock, Astrud Gilberto, and Cassandra Wilson, Baptista expertly fires off cunning polyrhythms, even traces of thumping samba, with restless fluency. Bailey, the wily old fox, skirts and eschews the bait, which is quickly conjured away and newly fashioned. The guitarist homes in on the delicious squeaks of the cuica and the twanging drones of the berimbau with truly awesome tonal precision. You could sing along if you wanted, after a caipirinha or two. And he gets almost as many different sounds from his instrument as Baptista can from his kit - check out the stratospheric plings and string-length fret-sweeps of "Tonto", which sound more like a prepared piano than an acoustic guitar. Wonders abound, from the berimbau/bent-string exchanges that open "Quanto Tempo" to the delightful collision of howling cuica and spiky bebop on "Polvo", and the spare, preposterous Webernian samba of "Improvisation 3". These days, "improvisation" often appears without it's customary qualifier "free". If there were ever a case to be made for it's reinstatement, this album is the best supporting evidence. Freedom means you're free to get into the groove, free not to, free to play with each other, free to play against each other. Sometimes frustrating, even scary, but more often than not in the hands of these two great masters it's hilarious, exhilarating and utterly irresistible.- Shop: odax

Can't Hold Me Down
||:: Luvydub Productions presents C-Love ::|| C. Love, Curt Cunningham, was intimately introduced to songwriting and creating loving music at a very early age. Born into a family where music accompanied every family occasion, it became an essential ingredient to happy living. His father, Clyne Cunningham Sr., a songwriter and musician, did not hesitate to nurture the natural musical talent he saw in his own children. He formed a recording band with C. Love and his two siblings while they were still very young and impressionable. At the precious ages of four, six, and two, C. Love and his two siblings recorded their first song in the studio. C. Love sang background and played light percussion. Clyne Sr. wrote the music and played the piano and bass. Over time, they recorded numerous songs and as a result music became a part of C. Love's eternal existence. Inspired by his father's love, passion and appreciation for all music, C. Love has grown into a musical genius who embodies all that music has to offer the world. His songs tell stories through the eyes of truth using a simple yet profound fusion of honesty, observation, reflection and love. C. Love's professional musical career has been one of quiet yet consistent and resonating success. In 1993, C. Love (then Charms), Clynetell - C. Love's older brother (then Composer Clyne), and Shala-Shakir (then Shamega) formed a hip hop group called the Natural Mystics. In 1995 and 1996 Natural Mystic's had two singles entitled "It's So" and "How it Go". The singles held all the ingredients for success and sold around the world, namely France, England, and Japan. C. Love married in 1999. In 2001, C. Love received a degree in Fine Arts, with a concentration in painting, from the University of Maryland at Collage Park. In 2003 C. Love picked up a guitar from a close friend and never put it down. In 2006, C. Love's career took another positive turn destined to help him gain international acclaim with the creation of Luvydub productions. Luvydub productions is a collaborative group of producers, singers and songwriters that come together to make good, positive music that keeps you moving and thinking. Dish It Up
Los Albertos are a six-piece ensemble of trilby adorned ska-dance protagonists who've been transmitting their hi-energy melodies to the nation since their formation in 2002. Christened by the barmaid at their debut gig, their fistful of grinning 2-tone skank with a twist of Santana has drawn attention from far beyond the pebbled beaches of their hometown Brighton, leading to regular appearances at Glastonbury and Beautiful Days festivals. Founder members Nic Tribe (Bass) and Tom Livingstone (Trumpet) formed the original line-up with Tim Herman (Alto Sax), Mark Crawford (Guitar) and Martin Andrews powering the percussion. After establishing a large and loyal local following on the Brighton circuit, Los Albertos released their first album, Los Bop, in 2004, containing floor stomping numbers Cheeky Rascal, Bossman, and Mr Chip, blueprints for their brass powered seaside ska sonics. A funked up version of the unmistakeable Grange Hill theme tune, and some soaring sax harmonies on Bei mir bist du schon, payed homage to the bands jazz and funk influences. Razor sharp compositions aside though, the band didn't want you to think they took life too seriously, hence Los Bop contained (arguably) their most bonkers song title to date: Pikey Killed My Goldfish. 2005 saw the departure of founder member Tom Livingstone. Des Crawley, previously the trumpet player with respected band Tragic Roundabout stepped into breach, to add a little swing to that Los Albertos bounce. With Chez Harper-Grimble, previously of 12 Stone Toddler and former jazz student at Chichester College, joining on Tenor sax, the band's sound was complete. Now with stereo saxophony, the band set about recording their second album Information Overload, released in 2006 with tales of festival drunkenness, psychedelic experiences at dental surgeries and calling in sick. 2006 and 2007 saw two UK tours, a four week Italian tour, plentiful festival appearances including Glastonbury and Beautiful days, headline slots at Brighton Fringe, Bath Fringe and Secret Garden, in addition to a residency at Brighton's Joogleberry. 2008 saw over 130 appearances, including as support act for the Buzzcocks, as the band continued to cement their reputation for awesome live shows fused with cheeky upbeat tomfoolery. Released through their own label, Chief Recordings, it is their biggest, bounciest, ass-shakingly awesome album to date. All but one track was produced and engineered by Al Scott - best known for also producing the Levellers' seminal 90s No 1 album Zeitgeist. The new album demonstrates that the band are not afraid to develop their sound further, with tracks such as Phase resonating a rockier edge than previous compositions, and the laid back acoustic sound achieved on M4. The Alberts, as they are also known love their hometown, continuing to play regularly at Brighton venues despite their national commitments. They also sponsor a Sussex Sunday league football team who has, in return, named itself after the band. The band all contribute both musically and lyrically, and their ethos can perhaps be best summarized by Guitar player Mark: 'It's impossible to have a band practice that doesn't turn into a social. We have a practice on Tuesday, and call in sick on the Wednesday...' Los Albertos look forward to a busy summer of gigs and live performances. Confirmed festival appearances include Brighton Fringe Festival, Glade, Endorset and Beachdown with many more to be announced soon.- Shop: odax

Until Tomorrow Comes
ABOUT THE ALBUM The story of "Until Tomorrow Comes" goes beyond a story of simply creating an album. These songs are my very first compositions for the piano. In many ways they are a window into my soul. This music represents a special time in my life and the realization of a dream, a dream turned reality. And so this album holds a very special place in my heart, that words cannot describe. When I look back on the long journey of creating this album, I realize that it all began long before I even started writing music... in the time of my childhood. In my youth I can recall "living in melody," experiencing beautiful music in my mind. Much of that music I had heard in the cinema. That music inspired me, and I think that perhaps I enjoyed it more than the films themselves. To this day much of my favorite music was written for the big screen. Throughout my life I have been fortunate to have been surrounded by people willing to nurture my love of music. My parents, my family, my teachers and my friends all have contributed a part to what this album truly is. This album is really a metaphor of my life, of my love for music and for the piano, and of my need to create something that will have a life of it's own. "Until Tomorrow Comes" had very humble beginnings. I began writing the music that became this album back in the fall of 1997, during my freshman year of college. In those early years I would retreat to the basement of my freshman dorm where there was a grand piano. I would play that piano, in solitude, for hours on end and late into the night. Rather than joining any musical groups, I had decided to pursue music on my own terms. It was in those private and personal journeys that this album found life. In the spring of 1999, with the help of a close friend, I recorded my first six compositions in the basement of my former piano teacher. Those six songs became a demo album entitled "Light in the Darkness," and make up half of the compositions in this album. "Light in the Darkness" quickly found favor on my college campus, and all of the positive feedback was very inspiring. The success of my demo compelled me to continue writing music, but it wasn't until six more years had passed that "Until Tomorrow Comes" took shape. The songs of this album span all of my writing from the years 1997 through 2005. When I listen to these songs today, I can remember exactly where I was in my life at the time I wrote them. It is as if each song represents a moment of my life, frozen forever in time. For that reason I decided to leave the songs in their original order on this album, in the order that I composed them. Therefore, as you listen to this album, what you are really listening to is my personal story told in music. The title of this album was inspired by something I once said to my wife, "Only thoughts of the good times we shared, until tomorrow comes..." It means to look no further then tomorrow and to keep hope and joy in your heart, even when times are tough. I knew this was the perfect way to represent my first album, as ultimately that is what this music is, a life statement... looking towards tomorrow. As you listen to this music, I hope that it will become your music and your story. I hope that it will live on through each of you, in your hearts and mind, just as the music of my childhood lived within me. Michael Samson October 2005 ______________________________________________________________________________________________ EDITORIAL REVIEW UNTIL TOMORROW COMES by MICHAEL SAMSON There are all types of solo pianists making recordings these days, but the questions are always: Does the music move me? Does it stir my soul? Is it interesting enough to return to for repeated listenings? With Michael Samson the answer is resoundingly affirmative. "Until Tomorrow Comes" is his first recording. He virtually came out of nowhere with this album, stepped into the spotlight and proved he could hold his own with the best solo pianists in the marketplace. He has several stylistic traits that distinguish him. He often changes tempo within his compositions. They may start slow and build, or begin on a quick run, slow down and then find a happy mid-tempo balance. But unlike a standard pop tune, Samson's melodies seldom keep the same pace throughout. Like life itself, they vary in moods, feelings, structure, dimension, timing and resolution. This keeps the music interesting. And the depth of emotion in the playing adds a human element and connection that is mesmerizing. Another aspect of Samson's playing is that he always knows exactly where he is going, why he is going there and a captivating way to get there. There is no doodling or noodling. This is well-constructed, passionate and emotional music that is deeply felt. The music is not comprised so much of sharply-defined melodies, but is more of an overall melodious journey that is well-worth traveling. A majestic tune like "My Dream" calls to mind the feel of a soundtrack to a vision of exploring the early American frontier. The light and airy "Rising Sun" is full of sunshine sound and is a great way to start the day. On "Eclipse the Night," Samson's left-hand takes on the task of sounding like an entire chamber orchestra behind the melody with the deeply-resonating notes recalling French horn, English horn and oboe. "The Dolphin" is a six-minute-plus multi-part odyssey, a tribute and the summary of a lifetime adventure by this warm-blooded species. As you listen to "Quest for Midnight," you can almost see the male-female dance, the give-and-take interaction that may lead to a deeper commitment. "October Beckons" recalls the autumn leaves swirling along the ground in the wind, as the tune speeds and slows again and again with incredible interplay between Samson's left and right hands. With instrumental music, it is probably best to leave the interpretation up to each individual listener, but it is obvious that Michael Samson's piano music stirs deep emotions and exquisite inner-visual scenery. This is music worth letting into your life. Randall S. Davis (The Creative Service Company) November 2005.- Shop: odax
