Digital Wars starts in 1998, when the Internet and computing business was about to be upended - by an antitrust case, a tiny start-up and a former giant rebuilding it. Charles Arthur here examines the differing strategies of the three best-known tech companies in their battle to win control of the exploding network connecting the world. Microsoft was a giant - soon to become the highest-valued company in the world - while Apple was a minnow and Google just a start-up. By February 2012, Apple was worth more than both Microsoft and Google combined. Through the voices of former and current staff, Arthur looks at the tumultuous battle between the three companies and what their various successes meant for us. ungekürzt. Language: English. History tends to cast the early years of America in a glow of camaraderie when there were, in fact ,many conflicts between the Founding Fathers - none more important than the one between George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Their disagreement centered on the highest, most original public office created by the Constitutional Convention: the presidency. It also involved the nation's foreign policy, the role of merchants and farmers in a republic, and the durability of the union. At its root were two sharply different visions of the nation's future. Acclaimed historian Thomas Fleming examines how the differing characters and leadership styles of Washington and Jefferson shaped two opposing views of the presidency - and the nation. This clash profoundly influenced the next two centuries of America's history and persists in the present day. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Rapkin. The U.S. military requires the ability to rapidly deploy troops, equipment, and materials anywhere in the world. Recent operations have brought attention to the need to utilize austere, unsurfaced, and sometimes sub-standard airfields within a theater of interest. These airfields may require additional taxiways and aprons. One option for the rapid construction of such is airfield matting systems. The focus of the work for this thesis was commercially available airfield matting systems to support large military transport aircraft, such as the C-17. Several test sections with differing strength soils were built with chosen mats tested in an elimination method, using a load cart that simulates contingency loading of one main gear of the C-17. Matting systems were evaluated based on logistical and assembly requirements, and deformation and damage sustained during traffic. A modeling effort was performed to investigate the potential of a simple model to predict the response of these matting systems under full-scale testing.

What do we associate with the name Pablo Picasso? And what did the Germans in the postwar era associate with the artist when he was at the height of his fame? Far more than we do-as is shown in this volume, which looks back on the impressive scope, tension, and productivity that marked his appropriation. The focus here is not only on the artist, but on his audience, which interpreted Picasso's art in highly differing ways in the Capitalist West and the Socialist East. The present volume, which is the catalogue for the exhibition Picasso, Shared and Divided at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, relates this chapter from German history alongside a host of illustrations: reproductions of political works by Picasso, views of exhibition installations, newspaper clippings, letters, pamphlets, pages from catalogues, and much, much more. Text: Émilie Bouvard, Hubert Brieden, Yilmaz Dziewior, Bernard Eisenschitz, Julia Friedrich, Günter Jordan, Theresa Nisters, Boris Pofalla, Stefan Ripplinger, Georg Seeßlen, Thorsten Schneider, Iliane Thiemann

The chapters in this edited volume, individually and collectively, pay homage to Erik Goldstein's contribution to contemporary scholarship in the fields of international history, diplomatic studies and international security. The book offers insights into the rich tapestry of past and present international relations with differing emphases on political, military and cultural aspects. While some of the chapters explore the twentieth-century British foreign policy apparatus and the different networks of people at work within it, others examine the deeper intellectual and other currents that shaped trans-Atlantic ties in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Geopolitics - in a historiographical perspective and with a focus on Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and East Asia - forms another important strand of this collection. All chapters explore periods of wider systemic change in international politics and thus offer reflections on the essential continuities and discontinuities in great power relations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Diplomacy & Statecraft.
