Charlie Munger: A Biography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 34min
Charlie Munger is an American investor, businessman, and philanthropist. He is vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate controlled by Warren Buffett. Buffett has described Munger as his partner. Munger served as chairman of Wesco Financial Corporation from 1984 through 2011. He is also chairman of the Daily Journal Corporation, based in Los Angeles, California, and a director of Costco Wholesale Corporation. Munger was born in Omaha, Nebraska. As a teenager he worked at Buffett & Son, a grocery store owned by Warren Buffett's grandfather. After enrolling in the University of Michigan, where he studied mathematics, he never returned to Omaha except to visit. In early 1943, a few days after his 19th birthday, he dropped out of college to serve in the US Army Air Corps, where he became second lieutenant. He continued his studies in meteorology at Caltech in Pasadena, California, the town he was to make his home. Through the GI Bill, he took a number of advanced courses through several universities; without an undergraduate degree, he entered Harvard Law School and graduated magna cum laude with a JD in 1948. At Harvard, he was a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. In college and the army, he developed "an important skill": card playing. “What you have to learn is to fold early when the odds are against you, or if you have a big edge, back it heavily because you don't get a big edge often. Opportunity comes, but it doesn't come often, so seize it when it does come.” - Charlie Munger ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Andrew S. Baldwin. Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America's Leaders , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 676min
One of the most captivating heroes of the last decade and the author of the New York Times best seller Highest Duty explores the nature of leadership with some of America's best and brightest. At a time of political polarization and economic turmoil, we yearn for superior leadership. Few have demonstrated this trait better than Captain "Sully" Sullenberger, a man who embodies the core values that are at the heart of America: responsibility, optimism, integrity, loyalty, and compassion. In this follow-up to his best-selling memoir, Sullenberger engages nearly a dozen distinguished Americans to explore the nature of leadership, what it means, what it takes, and how it can be fostered and developed in all of our lives. They are asked the important questions: Where do the best leaders come from? And how do the most successful and creative truly lead, motivate, and inspire? Sullenberger talks to men and women from diverse fields, including space exploration, business, government, education, sports, finance, medicine, and the military - all of whom embodying, in the truest sense, moral courage and leadership by personal example. Among those included are: Tony La Russa, the legendary baseball manager; Gene Kranz, the NASA flight director during the historic Gemini and Apollo programs; Michelle Rhee, founder of the New Teacher Project; former governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm; Jim Sinegal, co-founder and CEO of Costco; Lieutenant Colonel Tammy Duckworth, former assistant secretary with the Department of Veterans Affairs; Bill Bratton, former NYPD commissioner and LAPD chief; and former Labor secretary Robert Reich. ungekürzt. You've probably heard about the man Dick Cheney shot, but what if he wasn't the only one? Ian Davis is a loner, obsessive-compulsive, and a recovering alcoholic. But when a homeless man - who resembles actor Gary Busey - starts harassing him, he resorts to dangerous old habits. Kenny, a former sitcom star, is a veteran comedian whose career nosedives after a damaging video goes viral. In these 18 stories we also meet: a distraught husband who experiences heartbreak and salvation after a texting teenager changes his life; a man who returns to his hometown to find his first love stacking jars in Costco; a western sheriff who confronts a pedophile - and his own past; and a successful attorney who abandons his career to play the iPad guitar. Unexpected, humorous, sometimes dark, and surprisingly heartfelt, these award-winning tales explore the secret life of men as they pass into adulthood, middle age, and old age, confronting lust, pain, guilt, bewilderment, and mortality. The collection fearlessly distills for the listener tinctures of joy, pain, madness, heartbreak, greed, and other components of the human capacity for good and evil, for beauty and ugliness. O'Leary showcases humanity in a fluent, fun way, which will let you peek into the most intimate and the well familiar entrails of existence. Irrational Persistence: Seven Secrets That Turned a Bankrupt Startup Into a $231,000,000 Business , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 363min
A modern-day Detroit success story that fuels the entrepreneurial fire. Irrational Persistence tells the story of Garden Fresh Gourmet, and how two entrepreneurs turned a million-dollar debt to a 100-million-dollar annual revenue. Woody Allen famously said that 80 percent of success is just showing up; but any entrepreneur can tell you that it's the other 20 percent that's key. The founders of Garden Fresh took that old saying to heart, building so many strategic advantages into their products and business that their sales team didn't have to do any selling - they simply had to show up. In this book, you'll find out what kind of legwork goes into building a mega-success product, and the strategies, methods, and just plain stubbornness that helped two guys from Detroit build a market leader. Garden Fresh Gourmet is now the number-one fresh salsa in the US, shipping over a million units every week to Costco, Walmart, Whole Foods, and other national chains - and it all began with two middle-aged guys with negative funds and plenty of ideas. This book shares their journey, insight, and passion to help you build a better business and take it to the top. Learn how two entrepreneurs went from major debt to major revenue Discover the key characteristics of a product that sells itself Consider why selling out might not be the ultimate goal Track a journey of 'irrational persistence' from rags to riches Garden Fresh Gourmet is an inspiration beyond the journey - the way you run things at the top matters, too. Irrational Persistence shows you how to make the tough decisions, live with the sacrifices, and prioritize your values as you build your brand and just keep on going. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Good Jobs Strategy: How the Smartest Companies Invest in Employees to Lower Costs and Boost Profits , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 500min
Almost one in four American working adults has a job that pays less than a living wage. Conventional wisdom says that’s how the world has to work. Bad jobs with low wages, minimal benefits, little training, and chaotic schedules are the only way companies can keep costs down and prices low. If companies were to offer better jobs, customers would have to pay more or companies would have to make less. But in The Good Jobs Strategy, Zeynep Ton, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, makes the compelling case that even in low-cost settings, leaving employees behind - with bad jobs - is a choice, not a necessity. Drawing on more than a decade of research, Ton shows how operational excellence enables companies to offer the lowest prices to customers while ensuring good jobs for their employees and superior results for their investors. Ton describes the elements of the good jobs strategy in a variety of successful companies around the world, including Southwest Airlines, UPS, Toyota, Zappos, and In-N-Out Burger. She focuses on four model retailers - Costco, Mercadona, Trader Joe's, and QuikTrip - to demonstrate the good jobs strategy at work and reveals four choices that have transformed these companies' high investment in workers into lower costs, higher profits, and greater customer satisfaction. Full of surprising, counterintuitive insights, the audiobook answers questions such as: How can offering fewer products increase customer satisfaction? Why would having more employees than you need reduce costs and boost profits? How can companies simultaneously standardize work and empower employees? The Good Jobs Strategy outlines an invaluable blueprint for any organization that wants to pursue a sustainable competitive strategy in which everyone - employees, customers, and investors - wins. ungekürzt. The Necessary Revolution: How Individuals And Organizations Are Working Together to Create a Sustainable World, Hörbuch, Digital, 367min
Imagine a world in which the excess energy from one business would be used to heat another. Where buildings need less and less energy around the world, and where "regenerative" commercial buildings - ones that create more energy than they use - are being designed. A world in which environmentally sound products and processes would be more cost-effective than wasteful ones. A world in which corporations such as Costco, Nike, BP, and countless others are forming partnerships with environmental and social justice organizations to ensure better stewardship of the earth and better livelihoods in the developing world. Now, stop imagining - that world is already emerging. A revolution is underway in today's organizations. As Peter Senge and his co-authors reveal in The Necessary Revolution, companies around the world are boldly leading the change from dead-end "business as usual" tactics to transformative strategies that are essential for creating a flourishing, sustainable world. There is a long way to go, but the era of denial has ended. Today's most innovative leaders are recognizing that, for the sake of our companies and our world, we must implement revolutionary - not just incremental - changes in the way we live and work. Brimming with inspiring stories from individuals and organizations tackling social and environmental problems around the globe, The Necessary Revolution reveals how ordinary people at every level are transforming their businesses and communities. By working collaboratively across boundaries, they are exploring and putting into place unprecedented solutions that move beyond just being "less bad" to creating pathways that will enable us to flourish in an increasingly interdependent world.
