This irresistible debut, set in contemporary New York, provides a sharp, insightful look into how the relationship between two best friends changes when they are no longer coming of age but learning how to live adult lives. As close as sisters for 20 years, Sarah and Lauren have been together through high school and college, first jobs and first loves, the uncertainties of their 20s and the realities of their 30s. Sarah, the only child of a prominent intellectual and a socialite, works at a charity and is methodically planning her wedding. Lauren - beautiful, independent, and unpredictable - is single and working in publishing, deflecting her parents' worries and questions about her life and future by trying not to think about them herself. Each woman envies - and is horrified by - particular aspects of the other's life, topics of conversation they avoid with masterful linguistic pirouettes. Once, Sarah and Lauren were inseparable; for a long a time now, they've been apart. Can two women who rarely see one another, selectively share secrets, and lead different lives still call themselves best friends? Is it their abiding connection or just force of habit that keeps them together? With impeccable style, biting humor, and a keen sense of detail, Rumaan Alam deftly explores how the attachments we form in childhood shift as we adapt to our adult lives - and how the bonds of friendship endure, even when our paths diverge. ungekürzt. This book explores how the pregnant body is portrayed, perceived and enacted in Shakespeare's and his contemporaries' drama by means of a phenomenological analysis and a recourse to early modern popular medical discourse on reproduction. Phenomenology of pregnancy is a fairly new and radical body of philosophy that questions the post-Cartesian chasm of an almost autonomous reason and an enclosed and self-sufficient (male) body as foundations of identity. Early modern drama, as is argued, was written and staged at the backdrop of revolutionary changes in medicine and science where old and new theories on the embodied self-clashed. In this world where more and more men were expected to steadily grow isolated from their bodies, the pregnant body constituted an embattled contradiction. Indebted to the theories of embodiment this book offers a meticulous and detailed investigation of a plethora of pregnant characters and their "pregnant embodiment" in the pre-modern works by Shakespeare, Middleton, Webster and Ford. The analysis in each chapter argues for an indivisible link between an intensely embodied experience of pregnancy as enacted in space and identity-shaping processes resulting in a more acute sense of selfhood and agency. Despite seemingly disparate experiences of the selected heroines and the repeated attempts at containment of their "unruly" bodies, the ever transforming and "spatial" pregnant identities remain loci of embodied selfhood and agency. This book provocatively argues that fictional characters' experience reflects tangible realities of early modern women, while often deflecting the scientific consensus on reproduction in the period.

Publishers Weekly describes this book as “the most meticulously researched Lincoln biography ever written." Burlingame's Lincoln comes alive as the author unfolds vast amounts of new research while breathing new life into familiar stories. Publishers Weekly also notes, “The book need not be heard in one sitting. Each part stands alone.” Now Gildan Media brings to you, chapter by chapter, what Doris Kearns Goodwin calls a “…profound and masterful portrait.” From Springfield to Washington, Inauguration, and Distributing Patronage (1861): “The Man Does Not Live Who Is More Devoted to Peace Than I Am, But It May Be Necessary to Put the Foot Down Firmly”. From Springfield to Washington (February 11-22 1861): Lincoln agrees to undertake a taxing, circuitous, 1,900-mile train ride from Springfield to Washington in order to accommodate Republican friends in various states where they want him to speak. He alternates between giving hard-line, conciliatory, and embarrassing speeches concerning the Southern secession at these victory stops, as well as dealing with the varied receptions he receives at Albany, Buffalo, and New York City, etc. The threat of assassination and possible riots in Baltimore force Lincoln to enter Washington under the cover of darkness. Much to his chagrin, he is ridiculed by the press. His embarrassment at appearing weak and fearful may have disposed him in the momentous coming weeks to avoid steps that might deepen that unfortunate impression. “I Am Now Going to Be Master”: Inauguration (February 23 – March 4, 1861): Lincoln’s arrival in Washington generally helps lift the spirits of the city’s inhabitants and the North. Despite his efforts to help reach some kind of compromise, the much touted Peace Conference ends in failure and acrimony. Meanwhile, Lincoln works on his all-important inaugural address, fielding suggestions from close colleagues and deflecting efforts by Seward to make it more bellicose. At thi ungekürzt. A renowned climate scientist shows how fossil fuel companies have waged a thirty-year campaign to deflect blame and responsibility and delay action on climate change, and offers a battle plan for how we can save the planet. Recycle. Fly less. Eat less meat. These are some of the ways that we've been told can slow climate change. But the inordinate emphasis on individual behavior is the result of a marketing campaign that has succeeded in placing the responsibility for fixing climate change squarely on the shoulders of individuals. Fossil fuel companies have followed the example of other industries deflecting blame (think "guns don't kill people, people kill people") or greenwashing (think of the beverage industry's "Crying Indian" commercials of the 1970s). Meanwhile, they've blocked efforts to regulate or price carbon emissions, run PR campaigns aimed at discrediting viable alternatives, and have abdicated their responsibility in fixing the problem they've created. The result has been disastrous for our planet. In The New Climate War, Mann argues that all is not lost. He draws the battle lines between the people and the polluters-fossil fuel companies, right-wing plutocrats, and petrostates. And he outlines a plan for forcing our governments and corporations to wake up and make real change, including: A common-sense, attainable approach to carbon pricing- and a revision of the well-intentioned but flawed currently proposed version of the Green New Deal;Allowing renewable energy to compete fairly against fossil fuelsDebunking the false narratives and arguments that have worked their way into the climate debate and driven a wedge between even those who support climate change solutionsCombatting climate doomism and despair-mongering With immensely powerful vested interests aligned in defense of the fossil fuel status quo, the societal tipping point won't happen without the active participation of citizens everywhere aiding in the collective push forward. This book will reach, inform, and enable citizens everywhere to join this battle for our planet.

State of Mind is the Nom de Guerre of Kim Bonils, a Danish keyboard player and multi instumentalist, with a long career as backing musician in bands on the Danish art rock scene. The music is a combination of singer/songwriter tradition and lo fi electronica, inspired by the likes of Daniel Johnston (State of Mind has made a cover of Johnstons Poor You), Brian Eno, Leonard Cohen, and Serge Gainsbourg. State of Mind is produced on the dogma that all instruments should be played by Kim Bonfils, resulting in a largely drumless sound with keyboards and song playing the predominant role. The thematics of State of Mind is always the exploration of the minds trickery, that often leaves us a helpless bystanders to our own life. This is reflected in the notion of the Myotonic Goat, a special breed of goat with the unusual trait that it cramps up when faced with danger. While this is a less than self supporting habit, the myotonic goats has never the less been used for deflecting predators by sheep farmers. The music of State of Mind is centered around similar traits in the human mind, always pointing out the futile repetitions in both love and the mundane life. And sometimes sketching a way out.
