Mordecai Lincoln - Book 2 - Santa Anna's Leg , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 336min
1840s, action-packed adventure, with a goodly dollop of humor and romance. Fact: In the spring of 1840, a hodge-podge "army" of not very scrupulous mountain men, Mexican bandidos, and 200 Ute Indian warriors, swept down on Mexico's, Alta California. In the vicinity of El Pueblo de Los Angeles, these "brigands" gathered up and drove away, some three to five thousand prime-quality horses and mules! Little more is recorded of this event, and all sources vary wildly concerning the specifics. The following is the frolicsome fleshed-out fable of that raid, and of the unforeseen repercussions it precipitated for the destinies of three nations - Mexico, the USA, and Great Britain. The real-life players include: crusty, eccentric, Old Bill Williams, and fellow conspirator, Tom (Peg-leg) Smith, the mountain men who conceived and organized the raid, Ute Chief Walkara, who's braves did most of the dirty-work, plus "that stellar scoundrel" Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, President of Mexico, who had come north to quash the fires of California rebellion, using his usual methods of blunt force, summary trial, and instant execution. Our three "heroes" - Parson Mordecai Lincoln, mountain man Ben Hammond, and the ex-slave, Euripides - are sucked into these momentous events by merest chance. Along the way they encounter various intriguing characters in one too-close-to-call "mishap" after another. Vengeful Navajos and Comancheros, mission padres with an ax to grind, a seditious Don and his fiery daughter, American, British, and Mexican warships on hair trigger, and Mordecai's life-long nemeses - those notorious Maddox brothers - reborn! All contrive to keep "things" really popping. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Wayne Hughes. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/093373/bk_acx0_093373_sample.mp3. Benched: Gold Hockey, Book 4 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 304min
Max Montgomery was at the height of his career, playing the best hockey of his life, and lucky enough to have a starting spot on a team that was actually a contender for the Cup.And one by one, his friends were falling in love.Love. Now that was a dirty, four-letter word if he’d ever heard one.Max had experienced love and all of its aftereffects and where had that gotten him?Lonely, living in an apartment, and paying alimony to a woman who’d left him at the merest sign of a hiccup in their marriage. His only bright spot was his son. Brayden had moved back in with him a few months ago, after his mother had taken off to God knew where. Max loved having him home, but with his son only seven and him on the road for 42 games a year, they’d struggled. Still, they’d found a way to make it work. But then Brayden threw Max a completely new curve ball.He wanted Max to find a wife.Max had been there, done that, got the crappy T-shirt as a souvenir. No way would he make himself vulnerable like that again, no matter how much his son wanted it.A puppy was a perfectly viable alternative, right? At least that was what he’d been thinking until he met Angelica Shallows, sister to the team’s physical therapist guru, Mandy, and a brilliant engineer in her own right. She was gorgeous, smart, but had shadows in her eyes.Max knew all about shadows, knew they were meant as a sign for him to stay away. What was that about the best intentions paving the road to hell? Max may have wanted to stay away, may have wanted to abide the warning signs in Angie’s eyes, but....The real trouble began when found that he couldn’t do either of those things. ungekürzt. Spider #9 June 1934: The Spider , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 269min
How do you fight a menace that strikes without warning - that disintegrates flesh and blood and stone to mere chemical atoms? Men flee in blind panic from the merest rumor of a new attack, and even the Spider - dodging the death blasts - can find at first no weapon with which to combat this new and devastating evil that obliterates its victims in the fraction of time between two heartbeats! This is the challenge Richard Wentworth, alias the Spider, faces as he plunges into the cauldron of crime exemplified by Satan's death blast. Albany, New York, is the first city to face obliteration. Then the devil moves on to other cities of New York State and finally sets his diabolic sights on Manhattan, demanding a ransom of $75 million to spare the most densely populated city in the United States. The master of men faces two grim challenges: What mysterious force is so powerful that it could detonate a victim into dustlike motes unrecognizable as human? And who is his satanic majesty, the devil? Once again, Norvell Page delivers a riveting account of the Spider's urgent crusade to crush a supercriminal who challenges the combined forces of law and order. As never before, Richard Wentworth hurls himself into a hellish cauldron, prepared to sacrifice his reputation, his life, and even his very soul to defeat a foe to whom mercy is a foreign word. When his faithful servant, Ram Singh, turns against his master, Wentworth understands that he faces an enemy who can reach into his inner circle. But how can the Spider run his quarry to Earth when he is gunned down and incapacitated while the devil and his lethal minions run unchecked? Nick Santa Maria reads "Satan's Death Blast" with the crackling intensity you have come to expect of his superb talent. Originally published in The Spider magazine, June 1934. ungekürzt.
