With the nation at war in the 1940s, 22-year-old Jack Valenti flew 51 combat missions as the pilot of a B-25 attack bomber with the 12th Air Force, based in Italy. In 1963, he was in that fateful Dallas motorcade. And for three years, with the nation reeling from the assassination of a beloved president and becoming embroiled in a far different kind of war in Vietnam, he worked in the inner circle of the White House as special assistant to President Lyndon Johnson. Then, for the next 38 years, with American society and popular culture undergoing a revolutionary transformation, Valenti was the public face of Hollywood in his capacity as head of the Motion Picture Association of America. Been there, done that, indeed. Texas-born and Harvard-educated, Valenti has led several lives, any one of which could have provided ample material for an unforgettable memoir. As it is, This Time, This Place is the gripping story of a man who saw the terrible face of war while fighting with skill and bravery for his country; who was in the room as political decisions were made that would benefit or devastate countless lives in this country and on the other side of the world; and who championed the interest of the vast and globally influential movie industry with tenacity and vision. It's a gorgeous autumn day in Georgetown. The Democratic candidates for president and vice-president of the United States are dutifully glad-handing voters and the media outside a grand estate where a national-security conference has just been held, bringing together the world's greatest minds to discuss the issues that are threatening the country. It's American politicking at its best. That's when all hell breaks loose. When presidential candidate Josh Alexander's motorcade is ambushed by a group of terrorists, the nation is thrown into turmoil. Two weeks following the attack, Alexander is carried to victory by a sympathy vote, but his assailants have not been found. On the surface, it appears to be the work of al-Qaeda, and soon the FBI and the rest of the government begin scouring the world for jihadists. But then CIA Director Irene Kennedy and Special Agent Skip McMahon are presented with classified information so toxic that they consider destroying it altogether, as it contains intelligence pointing to some of the most powerful players in Washington. Enter Mitch Rapp, the one man reckless enough to follow the evidence to its explosive conclusion. His journey takes him through the shadowy world of contract killers, into the darkest corners of the globe, and eventually back to Washington, where the fragile pillars of power are shaken to the core. ungekürzt. The list includes eight high-ranking members of government and industry in America, Britain, Germany, and Israel. Armed with this knowledge, the leadership in Tehran decides it is time to exact its vengeance on the West. Acting on orders from the Ayatollah himself, Quds Force Major Hamid Farzan and his right-hand man, Lieutenant Yousef Mehrdad, blaze a trail of destruction across the Middle East and Europe, crossing names off the Supreme Leader’s hit list one at a time.  Matthews’ team splits time between tracking the assassins and protecting officials believed to be in the Iranians’ crosshairs. But with the ability to choose the time, place, and method of attack, Farzan and Mehrdad manage to stay one step ahead of their pursuers at every turn. It is only a matter of time before the Iranians’ unique brand of violence lands on the shores of the United States, home to the last three targets on the list. It is up to Matthews’ team of operators to make sure that doesn’t happen. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Patrick Hopkins. Tensions between Pakistan and India are at an all-time high. To complicate matters, 12 American climbers have disappeared in the snow-capped peaks of Pakistan's Hindu Kush range. The president is demanding answers, but neither government is supplying them. In the wake of the unprecedented attack, Kealey's operation goes into high gear. Once again, he is joined by Naomi Kharmai, the British-born analyst who has taken on a daring new role with the Agency. An in-depth look at one of the twentieth century's star reporters and his biggest story. Thanks to one reporter's skill, we can fix the exact moment on November 22, 1963 when the world stopped and held its breath: At 12:34 p.m. Central Time, UPI White House reporter Merriman Smith broke the news that shots had been fired at President Kennedy's motorcade. Most people think Walter Cronkite was the first to tell America about the assassination. But when Cronkite broke the news on TV, he read from one of Smith's dispatches. At Parkland Hospital, Smith saw President Kennedy's blood-soaked body in the back of his limousine before the emergency room attendants arrived. Two hours later, he was one of three journalists to witness President Johnson's swearing-in aboard Air Force One. Smith rightly won a Pulitzer Prize for the vivid story he wrote for the next day's morning newspapers. Smith's scoop is journalism legend. But the full story of how he pulled off the most amazing reportorial coup has never been told. As the top White House reporter of his time, Smith was a bona fide celebrity and even a regular on late-night TV. But he has never been the subject of a biography. With access to a trove of Smith's personal letters and papers and through interviews with Smith's family and colleagues, veteran news reporter Bill Sanderson will crack open the legend. Bulletins from Dallas tells for the first time how Smith beat his competition on the story, and shows how the biggest scoop of his career foreshadowed his personal downfall. ungekürzt. Lee Harvey Oswald was an American former Marine and Marxist who assassinated United States President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. According to four federal government investigations and one municipal investigation, Oswald shot and killed Kennedy from a sniper's nest as the president traveled by motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Oswald was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and defected to the Soviet Union in October 1959.  He lived in the Belarusian city of Minsk until June 1962, at which time he returned to the United States with his Russian wife, Marina, and eventually settled in Dallas. About 45 minutes after Oswald fatally shot Kennedy, he shot and killed Dallas police officer J. D. Tippit on a local street. Oswald then slipped into a movie theatre, where he was arrested for Tippit's murder. Oswald was later charged with the murder of Kennedy. He denied shooting anybody, saying that he was a "patsy".  Two days later, Oswald was in the process of being transferred from the city jail to the county jail when he was fatally shot by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby in full view of television cameras broadcasting live. In September 1964, the Warren Commission released its findings and concluded that Oswald acted alone in assassinating Kennedy by firing three shots from the Texas School Book Depository. This conclusion was supported by previous investigations carried out by the FBI, the Secret Service, and the Dallas Police Department.  Despite forensic, ballistic, and eyewitness evidence supporting the lone gunman theory, public opinion polls taken over the years have shown that most Americans believe that Oswald did not act alone, but conspired with others to kill the president. The assassination has spawned numerous conspiracy theories. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Adrian Clarke. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/112443/bk_acx0_112443_sample.mp3. John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was assassinated at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas. Fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, Kennedy was traveling with his wife, Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally, and Connally's wife, Nellie, in a presidential motorcade. A 10-month investigation from November 1963 to September 1964 by the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone in shooting Kennedy, and that Jack Ruby also acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial. Kennedy's death marked the fourth and most recent assassination of an American President. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson became president upon Kennedy's death, taking the constitutionally prescribed oath of office onboard Air Force One at Dallas's Love Field airport before departing for Washington, D.C. In contrast to the conclusions of the Warren Commission, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) concluded in 1979 that Kennedy was "probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy". The HSCA agreed with the Warren Commission in that Kennedy's and Connally's injuries were caused by Oswald's three rifle shots, but they also determined the existence of additional gunshots based on analysis of an audio recording and therefore "... a high probability that two gunmen fired at [the] President". The Committee was not able to identify any individuals or groups involved with the conspiracy. In addition, the HSCA found that the original federal investigations were "seriously flawed" in respect of information-sharing and the possibility of conspiracy. As recommended by the HSCA, the acoustic evidence indicating conspiracy was subsequently re-examined and rejected. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kevin Theis.
