'Song without words' (1986) Cl Pi: It was composed as a musical epitaph for Richard Lamberton, a beloved friend who had a particular love for the clarinet. 'Mephisto Rag' (2000) Pi: Is a ragtime fantasy grand piano showpiece, recalling Franz Liszt''Mephisto Waltz'. 'Dancing solo' (1994) Cl: Dancing alone-improvising with the shadows, the air, on an inner beat, upon a fleeting feeling-has always enthralled me.(L.L) 'Songs from letters, Calamity Jane to her daughter Janey 1880-1902' (1989) Sop Pi: ' is, 160 years later, the natural and long-awaited successor to Robert Schumann's... song cycle, Frauenlieben und leben' (The Los Angeles Times) 'Slang' (1994) Vi Cl Pi: Is a one-movement work in three sections. Libby Larsen (b. 24 December 1950, Wilmington, Delaware) is one of America's most prolific and most performed living composers. She has created a catalogue of over 400 works spanning virtually every genre from intimate vocal and chamber music to massive orchestral works and over twelve operas. Her music has been praised for it's dynamic, deeply inspired, and vigorous contemporary American spirit. Constantly sought after for commissions and premieres by major artists, ensembles and orchestras around the world, Libby Larsen has established a permanent place for her works in the concert repertory. Larsen has been hailed as "the only English-speaking composer since Benjamin Britten who matches great verse with fine music so intelligently and expressively" (USA Today), as "a composer who has made the art of symphonic writing very much her own." Beverly Serra-Brooks Serra-Brooks, who has been performing on the professional stage for more than a decade, was recently named as "One of the World's 100 Best Classical Musicians" by the International Who's Who of Music and Musician's Board in Cambridge, England. She will receive the award at a ceremony in early Spring 2005 in Europe. Ms. Serra-Brooks was especially honored by the nomination since it is one that the board in England decides on their own after reviewing a musician's work and visiting 'live' performances, rather than a competition in which the musicians vie. Ms. Serra-Brooks will also be published by the International Biographical Center, and her recording, reviews and biography will be placed in the Museum of International Musicians in London, England. A favorite with audiences for her sensitive and exciting interpretations, Ms. Serra-Brooks hails from a long line of Romantics. A winner in the 1997 Artists International Competition, Ms. Serra-Brooks made her New York Recital Debut at Carnegie Hall on January 11,1998.     The Florida State University Chamber Choir With the growth of the graduate program at Florida State University, it became necessary to create a graduate choral ensemble. Joseph Flummerfelt founded the Chamber Choir during his tenure at Florida State University (1968-1971) to begin to meet that need. The Graduate Chamber Choir is a select group of singers performing repertoire particularly suitable for a 24-42 -voice mixed choir, both accompanied and a cappella. The chorus has performed at both the Regional and National Conventions of MENC (Music Educators' National Conference) and Regional Convention of ACDA (American Choral Directors' Association). The Choir has been privileged to perform the music of Morton Gould, Jacob Druckman, Harold Schiffman, John Boda, and Salvador Brotons during the residencies of each of those composers. It has collaborated in performances with Sir David Willcocks, Robert Shaw, Billy Taylor, Bobby McFerrin, Nicholas Harsanyi, Thomas Hilbish, Frank Almond, Maurice Hayes, Harold Decker, and Anton Armstrong. Throughout it's thirty-eight year existence, it has had four principal conductors. Those conductors include Joseph Flummerfelt, Clayton Krehbiel, Rodney Eichenberger, and it's current conductor André Thomas.

    Mill Ave Chamber Players
    This recording is an exploration of new and famous classical music transcribed for woodwind quintet. The transcription of Shostakovich's moving String Quartet No. 8 provides an opportunity for the woodwind quintet to explore this fantastic work. Debussy's Petite Suite, originally for piano, is a common piece among the woodwind quintet repertoire, however Mill Ave Chamber Players member Monica Anthony restored this work to it's original key and by returning to the original piano music, provides a fresh transcription that is more suitable for the characters of each instrument in the quintet. The first title on the album, Elegy, was written by Andrew Thomson for brass quintet and transcribed by Mill Ave Chamber Players member Rose French for woodwind quintet. The Mill Ave Chamber Players (MACP) is a professional chamber music ensemble based in Phoenix, Arizona, formed in 2007 with an entrepreneurial grant from Arizona State University. With a woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon) as the core ensemble, the Mill Ave Chamber Players often collaborates with other musicians to offer a wide range of programming. In the 2014-2015 season, the Mill Ave Chamber Players is celebrating it's second season as the presenting artists at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, and will begin it's fifth season of morning chamber music concerts at the United Church of Sun City (AZ). In addition MACP is launching a new series at Central United Methodist Church in downtown Phoenix and Cicero Preparatory Academy and releasing their first CD in September. Embarking on it's eighth season, the Mill Ave Chamber Players seeks to strengthen communities by presenting quality chamber music performances across the Valley. For the second consecutive year, MACP received the Performing Arts Partnership Grant from the City of Glendale (AZ) to continue the 25 year-old "Live at the Library" series at the Glendale Public Library. Previously, MACP was awarded a grant from the City of Phoenix to participate in ARTSpace, an after school community arts program. Additionally, MACP has performed for the students of Rosie's House: A Music Academy for Children, Phoenix Children's First Academy and has partnered with the West Valley Symphony to perform for over 1000 students in the Peoria Unified School District. The Mill Ave Chamber Players has held residencies at the University of the Pacific (CA), Glendale Community College, and Paradise Valley Community College and held it's first chamber music camp in the summer of 2014. Featured performances of Mill Ave Chamber Players include a world premiere of John Steinmetz's dectet with the composer and faculty at the University of the Pacific, the International CALA (Celebración Artística de las Américas) Festival, the Southwest Season Ticket, and the Southwest Horn Conference where, in collaboration with the Phoenix Chamber Brass, gave the US Premiere of Navajo Mandala by Kerry Turner.

    Michael Zaretsky Born in the former Soviet Union, violist Michael Zaretsky graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory cum laude. He began his career as a member of the Moscow Philharmonic String Quartet and the Moscow Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra. In 1972, he immigrated to Israel and became principal viola of the Jerusalem Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra and a soloist of Radio Israel. The following year he played for Leonard Bernstein, who brought him to Tanglewood, where he successfully auditioned for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Besides being a member of the BSO for the past thirty-three years, Mr. Zaretsky regularly plays solo recitals and chamber music, he has appeared with such leading artists as Yuri Bashmet, Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, and Vadim Repin. As a soloist, he has appeared with the Boston Pops, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. A faculty member at Boston University and the Longy School of Music, he regularly performs in Israel, Japan, and Mexico. In the summer of 2003 he was soloist with the Georgian Chamber Orchestra at the International Music Festival directed by Liana Issakadze in Borjomi, Georgia. In November 2005, at the invitation of the American College of Greece, he performed and discussed the six Bach cello suites in Athens, Greece. In January 2007 he performed Jakov Jakoulov's Viola Concerto No. 2 with the New England String Ensemble. Mr. Zaretsky has made four acclaimed recordings for ARTONA: "Black Snow," an album of Russian music for viola and piano with pianist Xak Bjerken, "Bach, Bach & Bach," with harpsichordist Marina Minkin, "Singular Voices: Brahms, Schumann, and the Viola," with Mr. Bjerken and mezzo-soprano Pamela Dellal, and an album of Bach's six cello suites performed on viola. Besides the traditional viola repertoire, Mr. Zaretsky performs an extensive repertoire of new music. His collaboration with composer Jakov Jakoulov has resulted in many works for viola with piano, harpsichord, or orchestra, including Jakoulov's Viola Concerto No. 2, Sonata for Viola and Piano, Chant III for viola and cello, and Chant IV for viola and violin. In 2006, film composer and Boston Pops Laureate Conductor John Williams wrote his Duo Concertante for Mr. Zaretsky and dedicated it him. Mr. Zaretsky and BSO violinist Victor Romanul gave the public premiere of the Duo Concertante in Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood in August 2007. Pianist Xak Bjerken has given solo and chamber music recitals in Europe and throughout the United States. Orchestral solo appearances include Edinburgh with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Rome with the Spoleto Festival Orchestra and in Disney Hall, Los Angeles, with members of the LA Philharmonic. He has performed at the Royal Concertgebouw Hall in Amsterdam, Alice Tully Hall, Weill Hall, the Kennedy Center, and has given recitals in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Hungary. Mr. Bjerken is the pianist of the Los Angeles Piano Quartet, which tours the U.S. regularly, and with his wife, pianist Miri Yampolsky, directs MAYFEST, an annual chamber music festival in Ithaca, New York. In addition, he has directed three festivals of twentieth-century music: 'Angels, Saints and Birdsong: A Messiaen Festival,' 'Through the Iron Curtain: Music of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union,' and 'The Stravinsky Project.' Mr. Bjerken has held chamber music residencies at the Tanglewood Music Center and the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, performed at the Olympic Music Festival and the Tucson Winter Chamber Music Festival, and served on the faculty of the Eastern Music Festival. His first solo recording for CRI, released in 2001, was entitled High Rise, he has also recorded for Chandos, Albany Records, Fleur de Son, and Koch International and has made three recordings with violist Michael Zaretsky for the Artona label. Mr. Bjerken earned his bachelor's degree cum laude at UCLA, studying with Aube Tzerko, and his master's and doctoral degrees from the Peabody Institute as a student and teaching assistant to Leon Fleisher.

    Black Violet Act 1: The Leagues of Despair
    'Twas the Year of Our Lorde, Two Thousand and Nine... On a brisk early autumn evening in downtown Chicago, boundary-pushing chamber group Fifth House Ensemble and acclaimed graphic novelist Ezra Claytan Daniels unveiled the first act of the mysterious collaboration that had each party bound diligently to their drawing tables, computers, and sheet music for months prior. To curious peers, BLACK VIOLET was a difficult thing to describe during those months. Part chamber concert, part graphic novel, part epic silent film, the project was one that stretched the limits of each form toward something wholly new and uncommonly ambitious. The collaboration began with a uniquely compelling idea to create a visceral and accessible format through which an audience could connect in new ways with an otherwise traditional chamber concert. Fifth House recruited Daniels to help realize their vision, and he brought to the project the seed of a story inspired by the superstitious persecution of black cats during the last outbreak of bubonic plague in 17th century London. Starting with a small library of potential pieces, Daniels worked closely with Fifth House not only to program the music for the concert series, but to create a cohesive emotional narrative using movements from disparate pieces culled from various periods, regions and schools. This would be the structure upon which Daniels would pen a narrative driven as much by his own creative whims as the emotional cues in the music, music, in fact, written sometimes centuries before he was even born. 6 months and countless man-hours later, on that cool autumn evening in the City of Big Shoulders, Fifth House Ensemble and Ezra Claytan Daniels premiered an unprecedented entertainment experience. Performing to a capacity audience in the historic Chicago Cultural Center, the music of Brahms, Piston, Villa Lobos, and others came to life in ways it never had before: A series of vibrant and intricately detailed graphic novel panels, timed precisely to the playing of the orchestra, painted the world of Violet, a posh young black cat living a life of pampered ignorance in the decimated London of 1665. As the curtain closed on that performance, it's creators knew the next 6 months would be no easier than the preceding, as they went straight to work at creating Acts II and III of Violet's adventure, which the Chicago Sun-Times would dub nothing less than "a modern classic". He is well known in the American music community and has participated in a wide range of events, including playing for Courteney Cox ("Friends") and David Arquette's ("Scream") wedding, auditioning for Limp Bizkit, and making it to the finals (out of 4,000 guitarists) for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In Australia, Jeff has shared the same stages with Ernest Ranglin, The Wailers, Jeff Lang, Sara Blaskow, and The Devoted Few. As the electric guitarist in the Renny Field Band, he has made a name for himself by playing the guitar behind his head or with his teeth! The band has sold out prestigious clubs like The Vanguard in Sydney, received radio play, performed at The Cockatoo Island Music Festival, toured throughout Australia, and was awarded $2000 cash for placing 1st in the Jim Beam Band Competition. Along with performing, Jeff does a great deal of songwriting for international films and videos. He wrote and recorded the soundtrack for a New York film based on the tragedy at the World Trade Center. He has produced music for a multitude of videos and documentaries whose clients have included the United Nations, U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Red Cross in East Africa. He has also composed and recorded for television shows and commercials out of Los Angeles. Jeff's ability to adapt to any style of music makes him highly employable as a session musician and, as a result, his name appears on countless albums and projects around the world. Jeff's diverse singer-songwriter abilities are evident throughout all four of his original full length albums. His bizarre sense of humor, ability to improvise and create lyrics on a whim, and spiritual vibe continue to inspire audiences in the United States, Africa, Mexico, and Australia. In 2006 he had shows in America to promote his recent release, "32,000 Chances," which has been receiving radio play and is a hip representation of his talented songwriting.
