Im Ergänzungsband zu den zwei Bänden von »Mysterium Coniunctionis« ediert und kommentiert Jungs Schülerin Marie-Louise von Franz einen seltenen alchemistischen Text aus dem Mittelalter, der eine lebendige Anschauung der von C.G. Jung beschriebenen Prozesse vermittelt und zugleich zeigt, wie die alchemistische Symboltradition zum Ausdruck mehr unbewusst geschauter als bewusst gedachter seelischer Inhalte dient. Die Alchemie bot einem Menschen, welcher das Unbewusste als Begriff nicht kannte, dessen Wirklichkeit wohl aber erlebte, eine Möglichkeit, sich mit dieser geheimnisvollen inneren Macht auseinanderzusetzen. Der Text ist weniger chemiegeschichtlich als »philosophisch« bedeutsam und zeigt, wie sich die Bilder der christlichen Mystik mit denen der Alchemie wechselseitig durchdringen. Die vom Inhalt ausgehende Analyse des Textes ergab, dass sich darin ein Einbruchserlebnis des Unbewussten abbildet, das zu einem deliriösen Zustand des Verfassers führte, der mit Zuständen verglichen werden kann, wie sie empirisch bei Menschen, die dem Tode nahe stehen, beobachtbar sind. Da die Geschichte überliefert, dass Thomas von Aquin in einem Trancezustand starb und in diesem vorher noch das Hohelied deutete, und da die Aurora mit einer Hohelied-Paraphrase endet, musste die handschriftliche Zuweisung des Textes an St. Thomas näher untersucht werden. Die nicht uninteressanten Ergebnisse wurden am Ende des Buches dargestellt. Abgesehen davon zeigt die Kommentierung des Textes, wie die Psychologie C.G. Jungs als Schlüssel dienen kann, um einen chaotisch unverständlichen Text in seinem Sinn zu erschließen. Am bedeutendsten ist wohl an diesem Text das allmähliche Hervortreten einer gottmenschlichen Anthroposgestalt, welche die Ganzwerdung der Seele und das Ziel des Individuationsprozesses symbolisiert.

The Marrano Way

The Marrano phenomenon is a still unexplored element of Western culture: the presence of the borderline Jewish identity which avoids clear-cut cultural and religious attribution and - precisely as such - prefigures the advent of the typically modern "free-oscillating" subjectivity. Yet, the aim of the book is not a historical study of the Marranos (or conversos), who were forced to convert to Christianity, but were suspected of retaining their Judaism "undercover." The book rather applies the "Marrano metaphor" to explore the fruitful area of mixture and cross-over which allowed modern thinkers, writers and artists of the Jewish origin to enter the realm of universal communication - without, at the same time, making them relinquish their Jewishness which they subsequently developed as a "hidden tradition." The book poses and then attempts to prove the "Marrano hypothesis," according to which modern subjectivity derives, to paraphrase Cohen, "out of the sources of the hidden Judaism": modernity begins not with the Cartesian abstract ego, but with the rich self-reflexive self of Michel de Montaigne who wrestled with his own marranismo in a manner that soon became paradigmatic to other Jewish thinkers entering the scene of Western modernity, from Spinoza to Derrida. The essays in the volume offer thus a new view of a "Marrano modernity," which aims to radically transform our approach to the genesis of the modern subject and shed a new light on its secret religious life as surviving the process of secularization, although merely in the form of secret traces.

As a religion and philosophy, Gnosticism flourished alongside Christianity, and it is not easy to say which one came first, but it is certain that both movements influenced each other. To paraphrase John Dominic Crossan, it is unclear whether Gnosticism was a Christian heresy, a Jewish heresy, or an original religion that powerfully merged with both. Gnosticism borrowed elements from Christians, just as the whole of Christianity took a certain Gnostic flavor, to the point that some books of the New Testament, especially the Gospel of John, could easily pass as a proto-Gnostic document.At the risk of oversimplifying, Gnosticism was the belief that the souls are divine sparks imprisoned in imperfect physical bodies, due to the machinations of a lesser and evil god who created the world.
