Riddled into this experimental open letter is the story of a man who made the "hero's journey" to another world and back again. The prize he won there, the ultimate boon, is knowing what he wants. "Wisdom warns against desire, but there is power in wanting - power that can fuel the will and keep lit that precious torch, hope." This line stands as a rare moment of profundity in a largely light-hearted listen. For all its references (and there are many), this audiobook maintains a brisk, entertaining pace. Plus, it has the potential to help people along in their thinking, to contest somewhat the negative stigma associated with schizophrenia, to foster pro-activity in the face of mental illness, and to aid in recovery. What Eugene Uttley wants is to be whole. The Boon is progress toward that state. Being the thoughts of a schizophrenic in remission on increasing awareness of the infrangible connectedness to source and infinite whole, this creative nonfiction personal essay includes original and appropriated prose, poetry, song, prayer, memoir, travelogue, sketches of daily life, and literary exegesis. ungekürzt. 'Groundbreaking . . . a scintillating, intellectual investigation into black women and the very serious business of our hair, as it pertains to race, gender, social codes, tradition, culture, cosmology, maths, politics, philosophy and history' Bernardine Evaristo Straightened. Stigmatized. 'Tamed'. Celebrated. Erased. Managed. Appropriated. Forever misunderstood. Black hair is never 'just hair'.This book is about why black hair matters and how it can be viewed as a blueprint for decolonisation. Over a series of wry, informed essays, Emma Dabiri takes us from pre-colonial Africa, through the Harlem Renaissance, Black Power and on to today's Natural Hair Movement, the Cultural Appropriation Wars and beyond. We look everything from hair capitalists like Madam C.J. Walker in the early 1900s to the rise of Shea Moisture today, from women's solidarity and friendship to 'black people time', forgotten African scholars and the dubious provenance of Kim Kardashian's braids. The scope of black hairstyling ranges from pop culture to cosmology, from prehistoric times to the (afro)futuristic. Uncovering sophisticated indigenous mathematical systems in black hairstyles, alongside styles that served as secret intelligence networks leading enslaved Africans to freedom, Don't Touch My Hair proves that far from being only hair, black hairstyling culture can be understood as an allegory for black oppression and, ultimately, liberation.

"I've asked God to forgive me a thousand times!" This cry has been expressed by many Christians who struggle with lingering guilt. Maybe you are among them. You may have tried pills, therapy, counseling, and any number of "remedies" that didn't work. You are still plagued by regrets, shame, unhappiness, sorrow, and guilt over your sins. The "accuser of the brethren" is always standing by to reach into the closet of your memories and take out the ever-present skeleton of shame and rattle it in your face. But there is good news! This book is about an answer that many have never considered. If you are a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. That's right! It's not theory: it's written in the Word of God, "your sins are forgiven." (I John 2:12) You are forgiven for all sins past-present-future. It's called "Eternal Forgiveness." "Eternal forgiveness is the Bible teaches that every saved sinner is forgiven for all sins past, present, and future on the Cross at the moment of Christ's crucifixion. This forgiveness is appropriated by the sinner at the moment of his salvation to last forever." That is the theme of this book. Happy reading, my friend.

As JB Stoney explores the experiences of Jonah and others in Out of Death into Life, he shows us that "WILL is the real cause of the restlessness, and of the absence of full joy in souls. ...the only true place of happiness for a believer is to be without a will of his own..." and how the enjoyment of our salvation depends on us appropriating the death of Christ. What did Eve, Jonah, the Rich Young Ruler and many, many others in scripture have in common? They had a will of their own that was against God; God wanted them to go to the left and they wanted to go to the right. Even the Apostle Paul, who had thought himself so incomparably good, had found that he had a will that was against God, (so that he calls himself afterwards the chief of sinners). But after he appropriated the death of Christ "He has been turned round, as it were; he has learned that the old Saul has gone in the cross... It is not only that his sins are gone, but he himself is a gone man, gone in the death of Christ. He has gone to his own funeral in that sense, and is glad to be free of himself." ungekürzt. This panoramic book tells the story of how revolutionary ideas from the Enlightenment about freedom, equality, evolution, and democracy have reverberated through modern history and shaped the world as we know it today. A testament to the enduring power of ideas, The Shape of the New offers unforgettable portraits of Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Charles Darwin, and Karl Marx - heirs of the Enlightenment who embodied its highest ideals about progress - and shows how their thoughts, over time and in the hands of their followers and opponents, transformed the very nature of our beliefs, institutions, economies, and politics. Yet these ideas also hold contradictions. They have been used in the service of brutal systems such as slavery and colonialism, been appropriated and twisted by monsters like Stalin and Hitler, and provoked reactions against the Enlightenment's legacy by Islamic Salafists and the Christian Religious Right. The Shape of the New argues that it is impossible to understand the ideological and political conflicts of our own time without familiarizing ourselves with the history and internal tensions of these world-changing ideas. With passion and conviction, it exhorts us to recognize the central importance of these ideas as historical forces and pillars of the Western humanistic tradition. It makes the case that to read the works of the great thinkers is to gain invaluable insights into the ideas that have shaped how we think and what we believe. ungekürzt. Language: English. For almost four billion years, microbes had the primordial oceans all to themselves. The stewards of Earth, these organisms transformed the chemistry of our planet to make it habitable for plants, animals, and us. Life's Engines takes listeners deep into the microscopic world to explore how these marvelous creatures made life on Earth possible - and how human life today would cease to exist without them. Paul Falkowski looks "under the hood" of microbes to find the engines of life, the actual working parts that do the biochemical heavy lifting for every living organism on Earth. With insight and humor, he explains how these miniature engines are built - and how they have been appropriated by and assembled like Lego sets within every creature that walks, swims, or flies. Falkowski shows how evolution works to maintain this core machinery of life, and how we and other animals are veritable conglomerations of microbes. A vibrantly entertaining audiobook about the microbes that support our very existence, Life's Engines will inspire wonder about these elegantly complex nanomachines that have driven life since its origin. It also issues a timely warning about the dangers of tinkering with that machinery to make it more "efficient" at meeting the ever-growing demands of humans in the coming century. A simple mix up throws an innocent man into the cross-hairs of sinister government secrets and ruthless political ambitions in this timely, electrifying thriller from New York Times best-selling author Joseph Finder. Michael Tanner is on his way home from a business trip when he accidentally picks up the wrong MacBook in an airport security line. He doesn't notice the mix-up until he arrives home in Boston, but by then it's too late. Tanner's curiosity gets the better of him when he discovers that the owner is a US senator and that the laptop contains top secret files. When Senator Susan Robbins realizes she's come back with the wrong laptop, she calls her young chief of staff, Will Abbott, in a panic. Both know that the senator broke the law by uploading classified documents onto her personal computer. If those documents wind up in the wrong hands, it could be Snowden 2.0 - and her career in politics will be over. She needs to recover the MacBook before it's too late. When Will fails to gain Tanner's cooperation, he is forced to take measures to retrieve the laptop before a bigger security breach is revealed. He turns to an unscrupulous "fixer" for help. In the meantime the security agency whose files the senator has appropriated has its own methods, darker still - and suddenly Tanner finds himself a hunted man, on the run, terrified for the safety of his family, in desperate need of a plan, and able to trust no one.  ungekürzt. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding Fisher v. University of Texas, For Discrimination is at once the definitive reckoning with one of America’s most explosively contentious and divisive issues and a principled work of advocacy for clearly defined justice. What, precisely, is affirmative action, and why is it fiercely championed by some and just as fiercely denounced by others? Does it signify a boon or a stigma? Or is it simply reverse discrimination? What are its benefits and costs to American society? What are the exact indicia determining who should or should not be accorded affirmative action? When should affirmative action end, if it must? Randall Kennedy, Harvard Law School professor and author of such critically acclaimed and provocative books as Race, Crime, and the Law and the national best seller Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word, gives us a concise, gimlet-eyed, and deeply personal conspectus of the policy, refusing to shy away from the myriad complexities of an issue that continues to bedevil American race relations. With pellucid reasoning, Kennedy accounts for the slipperiness of the term affirmative action as it has been appropriated by ideologues of every stripe; delves into the complex and surprising legal history of the policy; coolly analyzes key arguments pro and con advanced by the left and right, including the so-called color-blind, race-neutral challenge; critiques the impact of Supreme Court decisions on higher education; and ponders the future of affirmative action. ungekürzt. The tendency for art to detach itself from any duty to reflect observed reality manifested itself in avant-garde art production almost from the beginnings of the Modern Movement in art. It is already present in pure form in Malevich’s drastically reductive Black Square, which consists of exactly that, a black square on a white ground. It is interesting to note the way in which this work was exhibited when it was first put before the public. Shown in St. Petersburg, newly renamed Petrograd, in December 1915 in the Last Exhibition of Futurist Painting 0.10, it was hung high up in the corner of the room, across a corner. For a Russian audience, it was immediately apparent that it had been placed in the sacred spot that an icon of a saint would occupy in a traditional Russian home. In other words, it was an emanation of the sacred. It is also interesting, however, to note further that recent technical research into the primary version of Malevich’s painting has revealed a handwritten caption on the white border surrounding the square. It seems - rather surprisingly - to read, "Negroes battling in a cave." This, researchers say, may be a reference to an 1882 all-black painting with a similar title by the French dramatist and poet, Paul Bilhaud (1854-1933), which was exhibited in 1882 at the Paris Salon des Artistes Incohérents - a forum for satirical writers and artists. The image gained a wider circulation when it was appropriated in 1887 by another 19th century French humorist, Alphonse Allais (1854-1905), and published as one of a whole series of blankly monochrome images in a satirical illustrated book entitled Album primo-avrilesque (April Fool-ish Album). ungekürzt. Join the Star Watch crew on their first mission to the planet of Trom, where hostile Pharlom invaders have appropriated high altitude cloud-ports as prisoner of war camps. As a fierce battle in space ensues, fragmented warships fall into Trom's atmosphere and head right for a populated cloud-port. From best-selling author Mark Wayne McGinnis comes the highly anticipated Scrapyard Ship spin-off series, Star Watch. The Craing War is now over... the enemy defeated. As planetary systems around the galaxy try to bring normalcy back to their existence, one thing becomes crystal clear... without the Craing around to keep everyone in line, space has become a far more dangerous place. With tens of thousands of warships idle, along with hundreds of thousands of Allied crew personnel sitting on their hands, it's up to Admiral Perry Reynolds whether or not to send the combatants home, and mothball most of the ships. But as more and more requests for prompt Allied assistance come in from the farthest reaches of outer space (i.e. for minor incursions into sovereign territory; or others, more serious - including barbaric planetary invasions), Admiral Reynolds is compelled to introduce a new stellar over-watch program. With his own career winding down, one of his final directives will be in the formation of a special intergalactic marshaling service... Star Watch. The admiral has the perfect ship lined up for the task - the most advanced warship in the known galaxy: the mile-long Caldurian vessel - the Minian. Next he needs to outfit the ship with a captain and crew he can trust to get this far-range venture initiated properly. Across the galaxy, young Boomer, daughter of Captain Jason Reynolds, begins her training in the ancient fighting methods of the Kahill Callan, and prepares to battle against Lord Vikor Shakrim - leader of the dreaded Sahhrain warriors. ungekürzt.
