From New York Times best-selling author Tasha Alexander comes the latest installment in the Lady Emily series. Death in St. Petersburg is a gripping new audiobook that will mesmerize fans of historical fiction and classic mysteries alike. After the final curtain of Swan Lake, an animated crowd exits the Mariinsky theatre brimming with excitement from the night's performance. But outside, the scene is somber. A ballerina's body lies face down in the snow, blood splattered like rose petals over the costume of the Swan Queen. The crowd is silenced by a single cry - "Nemetseva is dead!" Among the theatergoers is Lady Emily, accompanying her dashing husband, Colin, in Russia on assignment from the Crown. But it soon becomes clear that Colin isn't the only one with work to do. When the dead ballerina's aristocratic lover comes begging for justice, Emily must apply her own set of skills to discover the rising star's murderer. Her investigation takes her on a dance across the stage of Tsarist Russia, from the opulence of the Winter Palace to the modest flats of ex-ballerinas and the locked attics of political radicals. A mysterious dancer in white follows closely behind, making waves through St. Petersburg with her surprise performances and trail of red scarves. Is it the sweet Katenka, Nemetseva's childhood friend and favorite rival? The ghost of the murdered étoile herself? Or something even more sinister? ungekürzt. Language: English. I have personally interviewed all of the persons whose stories appear in this book. I am convinced that what these people saw, heard, or felt actually happened to them. I think it is important to state that none of the people whose stories I will tell in this writing sought me out or wanted to tell their stories to the public. For that reason I will not disclose their identities or addresses for their consideration. These interactions with the paranormal are fascinating, in some cases, frightening, and to others horrifying. Some of those whose stories I wrote about think their experiences were enlightening and profound. In the process of research and interviews to write Angels to Aliens I have become a more spiritual person and I am grateful to those who shared their stories with me and those investigators who spent hours with me in dark corners of basements and attics of homes hoping to encounter an entity from another world. I have been granted a peek into a world that exists not in our imaginations but in a reality that will cause you to question your own sanity. I wonder sometimes if these creatures or beings visit us from another dimension or perhaps a parallel universe, or from another frequency where our worlds and theirs make contact or mesh at the same time and frequency as to allow some of us a gift of enlightenment and grace while others are left with a sense of sheer horror and evil. ungekürzt. True tales of ghosts, hauntings, and the possessed.... All ghost stories are scary to some degree, but the ones we believe are by far the spookiest. As we read these tales, clutching at our blankets, staring anxiously at our closets, part of our brains are devoted to one simple question.... Why am I so scared? In truth, the answer is simple. We are terrified of these real life ghost stories because we understand one fundamental concept - if it can happen to them, it can happen to you. Humans channel their empathy to experience specific situations that other people have endured. This allows us to sympathize with those who are down, and celebrate with others when they have a success in life. And it is this ability to empathize that makes us afraid of the small scratching sounds coming from the reciter's attics, or the sound of phantom footsteps by the stairwell.... We know, deep down, that such horrifying experiences could have happened to us instead. And when they finally do, they can turn the most unwavering skeptic into a true believer. Spirits and demons are out there in our world, lurking in the shadows, biding their time. They have all of eternity laid out at their feet.... Here is a preview of what's inside.... The house of ghosts The boy by the road The devil in the Ouija board A doppelganger at the lodge Lady in the old dress A ghost near the fire Much, much more! ungekürzt. Language: English. Best of 2018 nods from the Washington Post, New York Public Library, Globe and Mail, the Guardian, and more! "The magic in Berlin is in the way Lutes conjures, out of old newspapers and photographs, a city so remote from him in time and space... [Berlin has] an ending so electrifying that I gasped."-New York Times Book Review During the past two decades, Jason Lutes has quietly created one of the masterworks of the graphic novel golden age. Berlin is one of the high-water marks of the medium: rich in its well-researched historical detail, compassionate in its character studies, and as timely as ever in its depiction of a society slowly awakening to the stranglehold of fascism. Berlin is an intricate look at the fall of the Weimar Republic through the eyes of its citizens-Marthe Müller, a young woman escaping the memory of a brother killed in World War I, Kurt Severing, an idealistic journalist losing faith in the printed word as fascism and extremism take hold; the Brauns, a family torn apart by poverty and politics. Lutes weaves these characters' lives into the larger fabric of a city slowly ripping apart. The city itself is the central protagonist in this historical fiction. Lavish salons, crumbling sidewalks, dusty attics, and train stations: all these places come alive in Lutes' masterful hand. Weimar Berlin was the world's metropolis, where intellectualism, creativity, and sensuous liberal values thrived, and Lutes maps its tragic, inevitable decline. Devastatingly relevant and beautifully told, Berlin is one of the great epics of the comics medium.

There has never been a history of America like Harold Evans's long-awaited They Made America. With the verve and cogency that made his American Century an acclaimed bestseller, Evans tells the epic story of the men and women who made America over two centuries. The workshop revolutionaries who made our world have never had the attention afforded the political revolutionaries who founded this nation. But it has been these innovators, in small-town attics and on the Mississippi, in Silicon Valley and the wheat fields of Kansas, in a black woman's beauty parlor and a Dayton bicycle shop, who set America on a course to attain a standard of living unprecedented in the history of the world. The flourishing of America is the story of an inventive people with a mystic faith in technology, from the early settlers who devised windmills as a way of getting water on the Great Plains to the electronic whiz kids of the Internet. Innovation, practical inventiveness, is the main force behind America's preeminence. But there is more to this extraordinary history. Harold Evans traces how the innovators have time and time again proved to be democratizers, driven not by greed but by an ambition to be remembered. They translated the nation's political ideals into economic reality. Yet many of these heroic contributors have been lost to history. Who fought and fought to make banking available to the common people? Who opened the world of international air travel to the masses? Whose Internet triumph was based on egalitarian ideals? Who put cheap electricity into everyone's homes, and was pursued as a fugitive? Who gave everyman high-quality sound, and was driven to suicide? They Made America is eminently practical; but more than anything, it is history to inspire. Language: English. Narrator: Harold Evans. Every dress has a history. And so does every woman. In Isabel Wolff’s captivating A Vintage Affair, a treasured child’s coat becomes a thread of hope connecting two very different women. Her friends are stunned when Phoebe Swift abruptly leaves a plum job at the prestigious Sotheby’s auction house to open her own vintage clothing shop in London—but to Phoebe, it’s the fulfillment of a dream. In the sunlight-flooded interior of Village Vintage, surrounded by Yves Saint Laurent silk scarves, Vivienne Westwood bustle skirts, cupcake dresses, and satin gowns, Phoebe hopes to make her store the hot new place to shop, even as she deals with two ardent suitors, her increasingly difficult mother, and a secret from her past that casts a shadow over her new venture. For Phoebe, each vintage garment carries its own precious history. Digging for finds in attics and wardrobes, Phoebe is rewarded whenever she finds something truly unique, for she knows that when you buy a piece of vintage clothing, you’re not just buying fabric and thread - you’re buying a piece of someone’s past. But one particular article of clothing will soon unexpectedly change her life. Thérèse Bell, an elderly Frenchwoman, has an impressive clothing collection. But among the array of smart suits and couture gowns, Phoebe finds a child’s sky-blue coat - an item with which Bell is stubbornly reluctant to part. As the two women become friends, Phoebe will learn the tale of that little blue coat. And she will discover an astonishing connection between herself and Thérèse Bell - one that will help her heal the pain of her own past and allow her to love again. ungekürzt. Language: English. From the late 19th century, when the Raj was at its height, many of Britain's best and brightest young men went out to India to work as administrators, soldiers, and businessmen. With the advent of steam travel and the opening of the Suez Canal, countless young women, suffering at the lack of eligible men in Britain, followed in their wake. This amorphous band was composed of daughters returning after their English education, girls invited to stay with married sisters or friends, and yet others whose declared or undeclared goal was simply to find a husband. They were known as the Fishing Fleet, and this book is their story, hitherto untold. For these young women, often away from home for the first time, one thing they could be sure of was a rollicking good time. By the early 20th century, a hectic social scene was in place, with dances, parties, amateur theatricals, picnics, tennis tournaments, cinemas, gymkhanas with perhaps a tiger shoot and a glittering dinner at a raja's palace thrown in. And, with men outnumbering women by roughly four to one, romances were conducted at alarming speed and marriages were frequent. But after the honeymoon life often changed dramatically: Whisked off to a remote outpost with few other Europeans for company and where constant vigilance was required to guard against disease, they found it a far cry from the social whirlwind of their first arrival. Anne de Courcy's sparkling narrative is enriched by a wealth of first-hand sources - unpublished memoirs, letters and diaries rescued from attics - which bring this forgotten era vividly to life. This book is a strong collection of extremely dark and scary short stories that cuts across a variety of horrific events. The stories contain a range of horror devices like vengeful ghosts, unnameable monsters, bloodcurdling absurdities and shadowy secrets; making it the perfect book to fall back onto on dark nights when you seek to be thrilled and thrown into fear. The stories herein are also ideal for camp nights, sleepovers, and other similar gatherings.Telling scary stories in the dark is an age-long culture and this collection seeks to reinforce that culture with a fresh style. The stories explore a variety of horror that have been crafted nicely to fit the contemporary society and even, in one of the stories, inject a science feel to the horror like in the story, "Becoming".The stories have been written to suit the general needs of listeners of all ages as evidenced in the teen/adult characters in the stories. In addition to the very common horror settings such as abandoned mansions, the woods, basement, and attics, the stories introduce other new environments such as the apocalyptic setting in the story titled "Last Man on Earth" - a testament to its progressiveness. In the story "October 30th", a tale of the annual, horror festival is told in a fresh tone. Most of the stories touch on the inevitable horror - death. "Ghost House" tells an enthralling and fast paced story and so does "Miss Fairborn’s Auction".There is a general belief that books give a wider room for imaginations - even wider than the room that watching a movie affords you, and truthfully so. These tales, when listened to in the dark, will leave you with much to imagine - an arm covered in goose bumps and the back of your neck with all the hackles on their ends. The curtains you see might not be curtains. The mirrors, too, might become home to many faces and the old man by the road might not be what you think he is.
