Years after his wife dies in a mafia hit gone wrong, Garrison Gage finally pieces together a life for himself in the Oregon coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs. Some days the cranky private investigator with the bum knee and the caustic wit could even call himself content. Maybe even happy. But marrying again? Never.Yet not long after quirky Rita Rodriguez enters the scene, Gage can’t imagine life without her. Unfortunately, when dark secrets violently emerge - involving first loves, tragic loss, and, strangest of all, a Spanish galleon that sunk in 1642 loaded with treasure - their relationship enters turbulent waters.Worse, the same deadly undertow that drags Gage into the darkness also threatens everyone around him. His friends. His enemies. Even the town itself.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Steven Roy Grimsley. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/231918/bk_acx0_231918_sample.mp3. When a deadly plague ravaged the Earth, refugees fled into space, crowding into any space station or lunar colony that would take them. Decades passed and the descendants of the survivors struggle to live in anything remotely spaceworthy. Omesh, banished from his Earthly home, finds himself in Barnacle Town, a collection of salvage clinging to the hull of a space station in lunar orbit. Thousands of lives cling precariously to the hull, at the whim of the corporation that owns the station. The station manager welcomes everyone. But then the CEO arrives, intent on scraping the hull of his craft clean. Omesh and his family, friends and neighbors? Not the corporation's problem. With nowhere else to go, Omesh vows to fight for his new home. But physics? More merciless than any CEO.  ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Edward James Beesley. A battered detective. A dead girl on the beach. A small town on edge. A curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That's how people describe Garrison Gage, and that's when they're being charitable. After his wife's brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the crippled private investigator retreats 3,000 miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife's death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation - forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl's murder. ungekürzt. They find her buried in driftwood. Harriet Abel never shows up for her appointment. Irritating as hell? Sure. It's hard enough to work as a private investigator without potential clients standing you up.  Of course, it's difficult to show up when you're dead.  A revered community figure in the Oregon coast town of Barnacle Bluffs, the teacher extraordinaire never gets a chance to explain why she wants to hire Garrison Gage before her body turns up in a sandy grave. Seldom deterred by the lack of a client, Gage barrels forward intent on discovering the woman's killer. Unfortunately, the professional curmudgeon stirs up a lot more trouble than he expects, putting innocent people in imminent danger.  In the past, Gage always triumphed over whatever dark forces stood in his way, but this time he may have gone too far - and he won't be the only one paying the price. ungekürzt. The Magic Pudding is a pie except when it’s something else, like a steak or a jam donut or an apple dumpling or whatever its owner wants it to be. And it never runs out. No matter how many slices you cut, there’s always something left over. It’s magic. But The Magic Pudding is also alive. It walks and it talks, and it’s got a personality like no other. A meaner, sulkier, snider, snarlinger pudding you’ve never met. So Bunyip Bluegum (the koala bear) finds out when he joins Barnacle Bill (the sailor) and Sam Sawnoff (the penguin bold) as a member of the Noble Society of Pudding Owners, whose "members are required to wander along the roads, indulgin' in conversation, song and story, and eatin' at regular intervals from the Pudding". Wild and woolly, funny and outrageously fun, The Magic Pudding stands somewhere between Alice in Wonderland and The Stinky Cheese Man as one of the craziest books ever written for young readers. ungekürzt. This is a very, very sad story. The characters suffer terrible tragedies. People die in unspeakable ways. Only a truly horrible person would be amused by their misfortune.Nevertheless, it is kind of funny. My advice is that you listen to this all by yourself. People can be judgy. If you’re a fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events, Edward Scissorhands, or the darkest bits of Roald Dahl, the Weirdie triplets - Barnacle, Garlic, and Melancholy - will feel like old friends. After being left behind when the entire estate of Deadeye Manor is packed up for a doomed vacation cruise, the triplets have to learn how to fend for themselves. (When a staff of 200 servants has taken care of your every need, even brushing your own teeth is a mountainous task.) From their time at the Our Lady of the Perpetual Side-Eye Orphanage to their adoptive home on picture-perfect Sunshine Circle, the Weirdies have a lot to learn about the world...but, at least, they have each other.  Language: English. Visalth is coming and the Nine Realms are in turmoil On the far western outposts of Queen Anastasias' Nine Realms, the evil bone dragon Visalth, in league with a mysterious army of brigands, is laying waste to the island strongholds. The undead horror is drawing near to the heart of the realm, leaving nothing but death and destruction in its wake. But there is cunning beyond simple magic in these onslaughts. Right before any battle begins, the wizards, mages and clerics protecting the lands suddenly disappear. Without any magical aid or assistance, there are none who can stand before the attacks of the undead dragon. So it was that on a quiet, barnacle-covered island in the midst of the Queen's dominion, the young and beautiful witch named Wendfala was abducted. Not long afterwards, on a quiet spring morning, the veteran holy paladin named Kell and his apprentice Longo received the strangest plea for help. They had no choice but to heed the call from the imprisoned Sorceress. But before Kell and his faithful disciple can ever dare to stand before the dreaded Visalth, they must first show themselves worthy of The Angel's Blessing. ungekürzt. Language: English. When Jessa Crispin was 30, she burned her settled Chicago life to the ground and took off for Berlin with a pair of suitcases and no plan beyond leaving. Half a decade later, she's still on the road, in search not so much of a home as of understanding, a way of being in the world that demands neither constant struggle nor complete surrender. The Dead Ladies Project is an account of that journey - but it's also much, much more. Fascinated by exile, Crispin travels an itinerary of key locations in a literary map of places that have drawn writers who needed to break free from their origins and start afresh. As she reflects on William James struggling through despair in Berlin, Nora Barnacle dependent on and dependable for James Joyce in Trieste, Maud Gonne fomenting revolution and fostering myth in Dublin, or Igor Stravinsky starting over from nothing in Switzerland, Crispin interweaves biography, incisive literary analysis, and personal experience into a rich meditation on the complicated interactions of place, personality, and society that can make escape and reinvention such an attractive, even intoxicating proposition. ungekürzt.
