Bug, S: Green & Blue 2010 Mixed By Steve Bug And Chris Tie
Mit Quantum Entaglement (a.k.a. TRACKS: 01. Matthias Meyer . Miss Appre Gate (Beatless Version) . Watergate Records (exclusive track) 02. Of Norway . Trust In The You Of Now . Cocoon Compilation O

Love By Machine
A year after their impressive last album Burn It Down, Detroit techno legends Octave One are back with a nine track double EP that again shows they are masters of big hypnotic grooves. Entitled Love by Machine, the album's name is a nod to the fact that the Burden brothers are such revered masters of their hardware. Both in the studio, where they cook up atmospheric house and techno with soaring synths and vocals and also in the live arena, where they are celebrated as one of the most accomplished and forward thinking performers in the game today. That is all the more impressive when you bear in mind they have been active since the '80s, most often releasing on their own 430 West label, which is where they appear again here. Say Lenny: "We've been exploring the theme of connection with this project. How technology gives us the illusion that we are closer to each other more than ever. At some point humanity crossed a line where the devices that we created to bring us together are the same devices that are blocking us from organic experiences." "Technology is only a tool, which we also had in mind during the recording process." Adds Lawrence. "We decided to go back to how we used to make our records, when we didn't have so many 'sophisticated' audio devices. Back to when we interacted in the studio together as musicians." Things open up with the loose metallic percussive line that is In Mono, which sets the machine made tone and is filled with promise. Locator then immediately gets to action with a gallivanting techno kick and various synth lines wrapping round each other as you get sucked into the groove. Just Don't Speak (Midnight Sun Redub) is a more deep and house leaning track with big feel good piano keys and slithering synths that will get hands in the air. Proving they have real range, 7 B4 Dawn is a moody and reserved cut with subtle acid pricks, hip swinging claps and a spaced out dead of night feel. The second half of the album offers peak time business in the form of the spectacular Bad Love II, the whirring and cosmic Sounds of Jericho and the big loops and fluid grooves of [Where] Time Collides. Pain Pressure is a wonky number with big bassline and a focus on percussive patterns as well as some vocals with real attitude and last cut 8 B4 Dawn ends things in a downbeat and sombre way with sad chords and emotive strings. It is pure Detroit, much like the whole album, and rounds out another fine release from these most revered veterans.- Shop: odax

Low Side of OK
Faded formed in the summer of 1997, emerging from the depths of the gloomy, foggy sunset district of San Francisco. The band featured darren thompson on guitar, molly pettit on vocals, marco zermeno on bass guitar, and jeremy true on lead guitar, sampling and everything else. Most of the music was written by jeremy, with a few notable collaborations with longtime bandmate darren. Jeremy and molly shared lyrical duties, often collaborating on lyrics for maximum effect. Darren and Jeremy had been playing together in bands since 1990, taking on the shoegazer/alternative/dream pop style around 1993. Their two-guitar interplay allowed for a rich, layered, sound, with a variety of complementary guitar effects, often compared to the Cure, Slowdive, or My Bloody Valentine. After a few years and a few singers, Molly Pettit was recruited to front the band in 1997, with a definte Siouxsie Sioux influence on her sleeve. Bassist Marco Zermeno, fond of bass heavy groups as New Order and U2 rounded the ensemble nicely. They recorded a demo tape which was warmly reviewed by San Francisco's The Guardian, and began playing the local club scene. Faded quickly started to gain a following as an incediary live band. In late 1998 faded began recording a five song e.p. which would later be called 'the low side of ok'. The songs were picked to show the diversity of sounds often blended together by the band. The first song, 'Ascend', was reminiscent of Chapterhouse, with guitars by the Cure, and an epic sing-a-long chorus... 'Over' cranked up the distortion further and launched into a beat-heavy feedback assault akin to the Jesus and Mary Chain or CURVE... 'World View' featured echoing guitars a la Flock of Seagulls or Slowdive with a driving bassline like a lost Joy Division song, with Pettit's angst ridden vocals soaring high above... The bouncy 'Slow Shadows' invoked mid-era His Name is Alive, the Cure and Luna all at once, with both guitars and bass intertwining... The e.p. closer, 'Cold Wind' was the obvious choice for a swan song, as it was the finale of every set for years and years! The chorus of 'whoever said that love was good, never had a love like this' belted out over a wall of sound that would have made My Bloody Valentine proud made this a fave of clubgoers, and the tortured feedback outro made fans of Sonic Youth smile... in 1999 'the low side of ok' was released to critical acclaim and heavy college radio & club rotation. Songs such as 'Over' and 'Cold Wind' were heard blasting from many bay area goth clubs, and KZSC radio pranced 'the low side of ok' the #1 new gothic/darkwave album of the year for 2000. ^#^however, in 2000 internal friction caused the departure of Zermeno and Pettit (thompson had left the band for personal reasons in early 99). this caused a major rethinking of the band for main songwriter Jeremy True, who at this point had been working on this music project for about 7 years straight, with different members. Reluctant to advertise for a whole new band, and looking at a backlog of many 'solo project' songs that had been put on the backburner for many years, True decided to re-envision the band, with his wife, Christina True. Together they re-christened the band 'faded sf' as a nod to San Francisco, and to separate themselves from the glut of new bands all naming themselves 'faded' (in 2004 eight different bands were all attempting to professionally use the same name!) Christina took over the bass guitar playing, and vocal duties for half of the songs. The songs she sang lead on remained close to the classic 'faded' style, while vocally bringing to mind Darling Buds or the softer tones of Bilidna Butcher (from my bloody valentine) Jeremy started singing lead again on many songs, after years of occasional harmony work, with comparisons to Dean Warham of Luna, or Bernard Sumner of New Order. The sound of the band has changed to an extent, leaning more towards bands like New Order, Red House Painters, the Cure, nine inch nails, and Slowdive, while retaining the Curve-ish/Cocteau Twins-esque songs from before. An 'indie' sound is more prevalent, however for every song with a detuned acoustic, there is at least one ambient techno song, for every emo-rock epic, there is a hard driven darkwave dirge... 'broken down, breaking down' was an 8-song CD released in a limited pressing in 2003, featuring the new sound and lin-up. a few years later the band went on hiatus from touring and recording, just recording songs for their own enjoyment... threatening to release them all upon an unsuspecting public sometime in the near future..! Faded strive to bring the idea of a strong melody back to contemporary songwriting. Jeremy shows no reservations about wearing his influences on his sleeves--blending the guitars of the Cure, New Order, and Slowdive, and mixing the rhythms and textures of Curve, Nine Inch Nails and the Jesus and Mary Chain to create 'a wall of sound that would make both Phil Spector and My Bloody Valentine proud', as described by BAM. ^#^write us- say hi!!!- Shop: odax

Good Thief
Postell - The Good Thief Postell can rap. He can flow. He can spit. He's 'kinda nice with the bump ba bump bump,' as he eloquently understates things on the album's triumphant title track. He rides beats with the natural ease of a born emcee. No stumbles, no unnatural pauses, no gasping for breath, but more than that he's got flows... plural. The man's been rapping since '93, came up in Decatur GA and now resides in Brooklyn NY, and it shows as he speedily squeezes syllables, deftly shifts cadences, nonchalantly flips styles, and expertly slings slang... especially on upbeat lyrical showcases like 'All I Do' and 'The Remainder. ' He even drops into a sweet R&B tenor. Yeah, he can sing too, and he does--with soul--on the funky-ass slow-burn of 'Sloppy' and on mature and reflective relationship jams like 'Michelle (extra kind)' and 'Speakin' For Jason,' the latter featuring an ironically buoyant bassline and tinkly keys juxtaposed against the raw sentimentality and heartbreak of the lyrics. It's not all grown and sexy (or remorseful in the case of 'Speakin' For Jason') though. Postell's The Good Thief is the record of a grown-ass man, but like any real man Pos is complicated. He might be grown, thoughtful and even a little bit wise, but he's still chasing paper, still chasing ass, and doing so with style. Tracks like 'Knees' and 'Inside Out' are single-mindedly carnal, well designed to get the ladies shaking on the dancefloor and elsewhere. There's even a Pos style take on intimate club (meets New Wave) on 'Slip.' That Postell can rap shouldn't come as such a surprise, but these days when so many folks are content to ride the same half-ass style throughout an entire album of filler banking on a couple of hooks and a couple of million dollar productions to make people forget about the rest, at least for their fifteen minutes, it kind of does. More than just a vehicle for a rapper riding beats, though, The Good Thief is a fully realized album, one that rewards multiple listens, and that's a testament to Postell's (and production partner and Q Brother, JAQ's) songwriting and musicality. The beats and rhymes are there--and they bang--but apparent upon closer listening are concepts, structures, ideas, and melodies that make The Good Thief a stylistically diverse rapper's record that folks will forever be bump ba bump bumping. - by Rob Babylon.- Shop: odax

Sister Anne
You notice the women first. Both of them. Both beauties. Both badasses. And both fully prepared to step up and destroy every antiquated misconception you might still harbor about females and rock'n'roll. Maybe you noticed, too, that they're not all white. And maybe, in this age of Obama, that means nothing to you. Or maybe, if you're one of those Afro-punks who's been rockin' out in cultural no-man's-land since your first Bad Brains single, it makes all the difference in the world. Either way, you quickly realize: This is not your typical New York City garage rock band. Sister Anne takes it's name straight from those most infamous of Detroit '60s bad-boys, the MC5. But this ain't no retro act. Because just as the 'Five channeled the spirit of Chuck Berry and Coltrane before them, Sister Anne taps into all things punk, rock, and soul-a Tina Turner scream here, a Black Sabbath bassline there, a little bit of James Brown and a whole lotta Iggy and the Stooges-and stuffs the whole mess into it's sparkling 21st-century blender. The result is something at once familiar and brand spankin' new- a frantic, panting, female soul-punk monster that grabs Garage Rock by the scruff of it's skinny white neck and shoves it, face first, back into the sweaty rhythm-and-blues murk from whence it sprang. And if you dig it, don't worry-You're not alone. In the single year since they started, Sister Anne has landed gigs with such punk-rock legends as The Dwarves and Cheetah Chrome. Within six months of their first show they cut their own album. Now they're geared up to escape New York and take this high-powered machine on the road. Call it Garage Rock. Call it Soul-Punk. Call it the return, finally, of bottom-heavy, butt-shaking rock'n'roll. Call it Sister Anne. ................................................................................... 'Modern music lovers know Sister Anne from the great MC5 song on the High Time album. Sister Anne was bad from her initial entrance as a mythological character "who don't give a damn about revolution," and she's even badder since she came to actual life in the 21st Century as a band from Brooklyn that's kicking musical ass and flying high under the flag of rock & roll. Sister Anne is the woman of the future, but she's even more the person of the present day-the one we sure enough need to help us overcome the ugliest parts of our social reality and still come out dancing with our integrity, dignity and self-respect intact. Sister Anne is here at last! Long live Sister Anne!' - John Sinclair Feb. 21, 2009.- Shop: odax
