    Zurück mit neuer Band: Matthew Halsall veröffentlicht sein neues Album Salute to the Sun. Matthew Halsall war noch nie daran interessiert, sich auf eine Sache festzulegen: Er ist Komponist, Trompeter und Bandleader, Produzent und Arrangeur, DJ und nicht zuletzt Gründer von Gondwana Records. Im Zentrum seines Schaffens steht dabei nach wie vor sein musikalisches Output - denn der Allrounder aus Manchester versteht sich immer noch in erster Linie als Künstler. Als Trompeter, der sich auffallend selten in den Vordergrund drängt, als Komponist und Bandleader, der über die Jahre seinen ganz eigenen Klangkosmos abgesteckt und entwickelt hat: Ein Sound, in dem Elemente aus der britischen Jazzgeschichte genauso auftauchen wie der Spiritual Jazz von Alice Coltrane und Pharoah Sanders, angereichert mit Einflüssen aus den Bereichen World Music und Electronica, aus der modernen Kunst und sogar aus der Architektur. Auch ganz klar im Norden Englands verwurzelt ist dieser Sound - obwohl hier so viele Einflüsse aus aller Welt zusammenkommen.Salute to the Sun ist sein erstes Album als Bandleader seit Into Forever aus dem Jahr 2015, und Matthew Halsall präsentiert darauf zum ersten Mal seine neue Band, ein erlesenes Ensemble, dessen Mitglieder allesamt in Manchester leben: Matt Cliffe (Flöte, Saxofon), Maddie Herbert (Harfe), Liviu Gheorghe (Klavier), Alan Taylor (Schlagzeug) und Jack McCarthy (Percussion) sowie Bassist Gavin Barras, der schon seit über 10 Jahren in den Bandkonstellationen von Halsall mitwirkt. Dem Gondwana-Gründer war es wichtig, eine Band um sich zu haben, die lokal in Manchester operiert und dadurch regelmäßig zusammenspielen kann - wie z.B. bei den monatlichen Basement-Sessions im Yes, die bis zum Beginn der Pandemie jedes Mal ausverkauft waren. Das neue Album greift die Energie dieser Sessions auf und kombiniert dabei Themen und Ansätze, die Halsall schon seit Jahren beschäftigen (z.B. auf den Alben Oneness, Fletcher Moss Park und When The World Was One): ökologische Themen etwa, Umweltfragen, das Leben im Einklang mit der Natur.

    Where Angels Fear to Tread
    Multi-instrumentalist and singer Martin Cliffe put the band Voyager Project together to enable him to realise his artistic vision. A veteran of several bands that had limited aspirations or scope, Martin wanted to be able to push the boundaries. A committed Christian and active worship musician, he recruited his bandmates from other churches, to reinforce his own musical and life philosophy. Childhood friend Rob Ogden, himself a talented multi-instrumentalist, joined to play rhythm and acoustic guitars, and Martin's wife Eva contributes drums and percussion. The fantastic if somewhat eccentric Dan Guerrard supplies lush and creative keyboard textures, while Aynsley Sutton rounds out the quintet with his rock solid basslines. The sixth member of the band is lyricist Ed Cooke, whose unique talent with words presents the band with many thought-provoking ideas. Influenced by a huge range of artists and styles, from progressive rock, country, pop, blues and modern rock genres, this collection of songs covers many bases. It features inventive instrumental sections, diverse arrangements, catchy riffs and vocals, layered vocal harmonies and more! There is nothing explicitly Christian about their lyrics, as the band prefer to keep their music accessible to all and to act out their faith in the way they live, but a listen to the album will certainly give you plenty to think about!
