Sous Vide: 102 Delicious Low-Carb Sous Vide Recipes , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 249min
Have you ever walked past a supermarket checkout and noticed the magazines? On so many of the covers, the predominant theme is diet. Diet, diet, diet. Fascinatingly, if you look at the weekly publications, they often have something advertised such as “The Fat Burning Diet! Never count calories again!” All well and good, except that the very next week, the exact same magazine will be advertising “The Best Diet Ever! The Not-Diet-Diet! Scientifically Proved!” Which begs the question - if the first diet is so revolutionary, why do they need to publish a new diet the very next week? Or the next. Or the next. The bottom line is, these diets, whether on magazine covers or on TV advertisements, just don’t work. People might lose briefly on them by avoiding certain foods and depriving themselves of this or that, but not only are these diets painfully slow, frequently their “food plans” taste like cardboard. As a result, people don’t stick to the diets very long and/or quickly have rebound weight gain when they give up and splurge on something that actually tastes like delicious, real food, because it actually is delicious and real. Sous Vide: Sous-vide is a method of cooking in which food is vacuum-sealed in a plastic pouch or a glass jar and then placed in a water bath or steam environment for longer than normal cooking times (usually one to seven hours, up to 48 or more in some cases) at an accurately regulated temperature. The temperature is much lower than normally used for cooking, typically around 55 to 60°C (131 to 140°F) for meat, higher for vegetables. The intent is to cook the item evenly, ensuring that the inside is properly cooked without overcooking the outside, and to retain moisture. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: William Bahl. The Flight of the Century: Charles Lindbergh and the Rise of American Aviation: Oxford University Press: Pivotal Moments in US History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 677min
In late May 1927, an inexperienced and unassuming 25-year-old Air Mail pilot from rural Minnesota stunned the world by making the first non-stop transatlantic flight. A spectacular feat of individual daring and collective technological accomplishment, Charles Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris ushered in America's age of commercial aviation. In The Flight of the Century, Thomas Kessner takes a fresh look at one of America's greatest moments, explaining how what was essentially a publicity stunt became a turning point in history. He vividly recreates the flight itself and the euphoric reaction to it on both sides of the Atlantic, and argues that Lindbergh's amazing feat occurred just when the world - still struggling with the disillusionment of World War I - desperately needed a hero to restore a sense of optimism and innocence. Kessner also shows how new forms of mass media made Lindbergh into the most famous international celebrity of his time, casting him in the role of a humble yet dashing American hero of rural origins and traditional values. Much has been made of Lindbergh's personal integrity and his refusal to cash in on his fame. But Kessner reveals that Lindbergh was closely allied with, and managed by, a group of powerful businessmen - Harry Guggenheim, Dwight Morrow, and Henry Breckenridge chief among them - who sought to exploit aviation for mass transport and massive profits. Their efforts paid off as commercial air traffic soared from 6,000 passengers in 1926 to 173,000 passengers in 1929. Kessner's book is the first to fully explore Lindbergh's central role in promoting the airline industry - the rise of which has influenced everything from where we live to how we wage war and do business. The Flight of the Century sheds new light on one of America's fascinatingly enigmatic heroes and most transformative moments. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob McGraw. The Dawn of Language
"A model of popular-science writing" STEVEN POOLE"I love a book that teaches me things I didn't know while provoking in me thoughts I never had before, setting my mind racing in new directions. Such a book is The Dawn of Language" RICHARD DAWKINS"Magisterial . . . [A] detective story of the deep past" TelegraphWho was "the first speaker" and what was their first message? An erudite, tightly woven and beautifully written account of one of humanity's greatest mysteries - the origins of language.Drawing on evidence from many fields, including archaeology, anthropology, neurology and linguistics, Sverker Johansson weaves these disparate threads together to show how our human ancestors evolved into language users. The Dawn of Language provides a fascinating survey of how grammar came into being and the differences or similarities between languages spoken around the world, before exploring how language eventually emerged in the very remote human past. Our intellectual and physiological changes through the process of evolution both have a bearing on our ability to acquire language. But to what extent is the evolution of language dependent on genes, or on environment? How has language evolved further, and how is it changing now, in the process of globalisation? And which aspects of language ensure that robots are not yet intelligent enough to reconstruct how language has evolved?Johansson's far-reaching, authoritative and research-based approach to language is brought to life through dozens of astonishing examples, both human and animal, in a fascinatingly erudite and entertaining volume for anyone who has ever contemplated not just why we speak the way we do, but why we speak at all.Translated from the Swedish by Frank Perry- Shop: buecher

The Private Lives of the Tudors (eBook, ePUB)
'Borman approaches her topic with huge enthusiasm and a keen eye for entertaining...this is a very human story of a remarkable family, full of vignettes that sit long in the mind.' Dan Jones, The Sunday Times'Tracy Borman's eye for detail is impressive; the book is packed with fascinating courtly minutiae... this is a wonderful book.' Daily Mail'Tracy Borman's passion for the Tudor period shines forth from the pages of this fascinatingly detailed book, which vividly illuminates what went on behind the scenes at the Tudor court.' Alison Weir'I do not live in a corner. A thousand eyes see all I do.' Elizabeth IThe Tudor monarchs were constantly surrounded by an army of attendants, courtiers and ministers. Even in their most private moments, they were accompanied by a servant specifically appointed for the task. A groom of the stool would stand patiently by as Henry VIII performed his daily purges, and when Elizabeth I retired for the evening, one of her female servants would sleep at the end of her bed. These attendants knew the truth behind the glamorous exterior. They saw the tears shed by Henry VII upon the death of his son Arthur. They knew the tragic secret behind 'Bloody' Mary's phantom pregnancies. And they saw the 'crooked carcass' beneath Elizabeth I's carefully applied makeup, gowns and accessories. It is the accounts of these eyewitnesses, as well as a rich array of other contemporary sources that historian Tracy Borman has examined more closely than ever before. With new insights and discoveries, and in the same way that she brilliantly illuminated the real Thomas Cromwell - The Private Life of the Tudors will reveal previously unexamined details about the characters we think we know so well.- Shop: buecher

Zealot
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • "A lucid, intelligent page-turner" (Los Angeles Times) that challenges long-held assumptions about Jesus, from the host of Believer Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the "Kingdom of God." The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was executed as a state criminal. Within decades after his death, his followers would call him God. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most enigmatic figures by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived. Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction. He explores the reasons the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary. And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity. Zealot yields a fresh perspective on one of the greatest stories ever told even as it affirms the radical and transformative nature of Jesus' life and mission. Praise for Zealot "Riveting . . . Aslan synthesizes Scripture and scholarship to create an original account."-The New Yorker "Fascinatingly and convincingly drawn . . . Aslan may come as close as one can to respecting those who revere Jesus as the peace-loving, turn-the-other-cheek, true son of God depicted in modern Christianity, even as he knocks down that image."-The Seattle Times "[Aslan's] literary talent is as essential to the effect of Zealot as are his scholarly and journalistic chops. . . . A vivid, persuasive portrait."-Salon "This tough-minded, deeply political book does full justice to the real Jesus, and honors him in the process."-San Francisco Chronicle "A special and revealing work, one that believer and skeptic alike will find surprising, engaging, and original."-Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power "Compulsively readable . . . This superb work is highly recommended."-Publishers Weekly (starred review)- Shop: buecher

Descend Again
In the small town of Sintiempo in Arizona, in the hot summers of 1942 and 1943, young Millie Delaney is the solitary teacher at the tiny local school. There are only a few students, most of them just biding their time before they leave. The girls most likely will marry; the boys will probably be swallowed up by the town's main employer, the marble mine. Teaching in these circumstances is not very inspiring work, but Millie is used to the dullness, and anyway she's a pillar of the community - her father helped establish the marble mine which put the town on the map. But this period is different. Firstly, one of her students, Miguel, suddenly shows unexpected signs of brilliance, and a love of poetry. He and Millie develop an intense connection which brings joy and inspiration to them both. When Miguel finally finds the confidence to put pen to paper for himself in a poem, Millie is astonished by the result. At about the same time, a wanderer slips into town. Karl is incredibly tall, very blond, and at first fascinatingly elusive. He gets a job at the mine, and once they've met, Millie and he cannot avoid their attraction to each other. Millie can feel her quiet life blooming into much more. But the physical side of Karl's love proves not to have the poetic qualities she has always dreamed of. A barrier develops between them. Miguel is also deeply troubled, because his poem was not all that it seemed. He wants to talk to her about it, but Miss Delaney seems preoccupied. As the summer of 1943 moves into its full peak, the desert landscape ripples not only with ringing waves of heat, but with tension. Before the summer is out, one of the three will be dead, one gone, and the other in hiding. First published in 1960, Descend Again was Janet Burroway's first novel, heralding an extraordinary talent in prose of startling beauty. The rich southern novel of Carson McCullers and Eudora Welty had been given a new desert-state transformation, by a writer somewhat more lean and spare. It was the inauguration of a brilliant career.- Shop: buecher

Violinsonaten
Bloch's single-span second sonata, subtitled Poème mystique (1924), is mainly on the striving side - a beautiful, rhapsodic unfolding - while brutalism is obtruded by the middle movement of Shostakovich's 1968 sonata. Janácek's fascinatingly inventive and searching four-movement sonata (1922) is the disc's deeply rewarding centrepiece (P. Driver, Sunday Times).- Shop: odax
