Althochdeutsches Wörterbuch (eBook, PDF)
The conscientious revision of a dictionary demands the strict observance of the underlying philological and historical principles, stringent adherence to the textual tradition and constant attention to ongoing research. Published in 1969, the first edition observed these principles and provided significant inspiration for Old High German research. Since publication of the fifth edition, the dictionary has listed the most important scientific works that are of concern to Old High German texts. The vocabulary provided in this edition includes numerous additions from various texts, in particular from the oldest Williram translations, but also from minor texts that had not previously received sufficient attention. Necessary corrections and improvements were carried out again ensuring that the seventh edition also takes the current scientific requirements into account. Furthermore, it continues to provide reliable assistance to teachers and students of German, Nordic, Dutch, English, Frisian as well as Old Saxon and Medieval Latin studies, and those interested in Romance languages.- Shop: buecher

The Rider on the White Horse , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 285min
The Rider on the White Horse is one of the most beautiful stories to emerge from 19th century Germany, as well as being one of the most romantic and most tragic. In this short masterpiece, set in the middle of the 18th century in North Friesland, Theodor Storm exhibits a man's will in conflict with unintelligent conservatism among his fellow men on one side, and with the forces of nature on the other. The figure of dikemaster Hauke Haien emerges from this struggle in starkly outlined character. The tragedy which finally engulfs Hauke and his family is profoundly moving. At the same time, we are given a vivid picture of the landscape of the lowlying coast of the North Sea and its ever-present menace of the flood tide. And the sternness of the action is tempered with glimpses of humor and a picture of warm affection. North Frisian poet and novelist Theodor Storm (1817-1888), whose craft of fiction grew out of his lyric verse, was an outstanding representative of the German romantic movement. His novellas are among the finest in German literature. With The Rider on the White Horse, his art reached a pinnacle of perfection, placing him in the pantheon of the masters of short fiction. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. The Tenth Witness: Henri Poincaré, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 551min
The Tenth Witness,a prequel to the award-winning All Cry Chaos, is the tale of a man upended: a 28-year-old who rejects a brilliant career in engineering for a dark, uncertain one in international police work. On the night of October 9, 1799, the frigate HMS Lutine broke apart on the shoals of the Frisian Islands off the Dutch coast. When the insurer Lloyds of London paid on the wreck, it took ownership and planned expeditions to recoup the lost millions in gold and silver. Nearly 200 years later, after a series of largely failed salvage operations, Lloyds tries again - this time on the strength of new technologies and a strategy devised by the gifted young engineer Henri Poincaré. It is late spring 1978, and Poincaré has worked nearly to exhaustion preparing for the Lutine dive. Before the salvage season begins, however, he takes a rare holiday: a hike at low tide across the vast, muddy flats of the Wadden Sea. His guide is Liesel Kraus, who is smart, able, appealing - and troubled. She and her brother Anselm are haunted by a violent history that generates both rage and, as the directors of Kraus Steel, an enormous, corrupting wealth. The closer Poincaré draws to Liesel and Anselm, the more warped life becomes until, finally, love and a death threat compel him to investigate what no one else will - aside from Interpol. It seems that pain as well as treasure can be dredged up from the past to reshape the present. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Grover Gardner. Swallows and Armenians , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 253min
The fictional Walker children are much loved characters in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, a quintessentially English family in an archetypal English children's classic. However, it was an Anglo-Armenian family from Aleppo who were the catalyst and inspiration. Knowledge of this should enrich and enhance the story for young readers of the book and its subsequent interpretations, but until recently, this information was not widely known. Following a breakdown in Ransome’s relationship with members of the family, their connection was downplayed, and the author withdrew his original dedication to them in his book, replacing it with a short introduction of how it came to be written. This cited his own childhood as the main inspiration.Swallows and Armenians is Karen Babayan’s timely introduction of this free-spirited and gifted family who inspired Arthur Ransome to write his first book of fiction for children; a book that has gone on to be a classic of Lake District mythology. The short stories in Swallows and Armenians are set in Coniston, Aleppo, Windermere, and Bradford and supported by a number of succinct essays by the author which introduce us to the turbulent history of the Armenian nation and its food, culture, and language. They also explore the history of Cumbria, which saw the Roman, Frisian, Syrian, and North African legions garrisoned there. Viking settlers also left evidence of their language in the local Cumbrian dialects. In the preface, Dr. Vicki Bertram writes: “In these reimaginings of the Altounyan children’s lives, Karen uncovers some of the ethnic richness of English culture - a richness that is too often erased or silenced by simplified or reductive and misleading versions of history”. Applying newly appraised correspondence and diary evidence, the stories and essays are supported and inspired not only by archival material, but by conversations with museum curators, film extras, and of course, the children o ungekürzt. Multilingual Europe
This book offers an inclusive perspective on the constellation of languages in Europe by taking into account official state languages, regional minority languages and immigrant minority languages. Although "celebrating linguistic diversity" is one of the key propositions in the European discourse on multilingualism and language policies, this device holds for these three types of languages in a decreasing order. All three types of languages, however, are constituent parts of a multilingual European identity and should be taken into account in any type of language policy. Both facts and policies on multilingualism and plurilingual education are addressed in case studies at the national and European level. The selection of case studies is based on a careful weighing of geographical spread of countries and languages across Europe on the one hand, and availability of established expert knowledge on the other. After an Introduction to the theme of the book (Guus Extra and Durk Gorter), Part I deals with official state languages with a focus on the spread of English as lingua franca across Europe (Juliane House), on French and France (Dennis Ager), on Polish in Poland and abroad (Justyna Lesniew?ka), and on language constellations in the Baltic States (Gabrielle Hogan-Brun). Part II deals with regional minority languages with a focus on Catalan in Spain (Francesc Xavier Vila i Moreno), Frisian in the Netherlands (Durk Gorter et al.), Hungarian as a minority language in Central Europe (Susan Gal), and Saami in the Nordic countries (Mikael Svonni). Part III deals with immigrant minority languages in the United Kingdom (Viv Edwards), Sweden (Lilian Nygren-Junkin), Italy (Monica Barni and Carla Bagna) and Europe at large (Guus Extra and Kutlay Ya?mur).- Shop: buecher
