The Knight of the Burning Pestle (eBook, ePUB)
'Let him kill a lion with a pestle, husband; let him kill a lion with a pestle.'So exclaims the Grocer's wife who, with her husband and servants, is attending one of the London's elite playhouses where a theatre comany has just begun to perform. Peeved at the fact that all the plays they see are satires on the lives and values of London's citizenry, the Grocer and his wife interrupt and demand a play that instead contains chivalric quests and courtly love. What's more, they nominate their apprentice Rafe to take on the hero's role of the knight in this entirely new play. The author, Francis Beaumont, ends up not just satirising the grocers' naive taste for romance but parodying his own example of citizen comedy. This play-within-a-play becomes a pastiche of contemporary plays that scorned those who were not courtiers or at least gentlemen or ladies. Like Cervantes in Don Quixote, Beaumont exposes the folly of those that take representations for realities, but also celebrates their idealism and love of adventure. The editor, Michael Hattaway, is editor of plays by Shakespeare and Jonson as well as of several volumes of critical essays, and author of Elizabethan Popular Theatre, Hamlet: The Critics Debate, and Renaissance and Reformations: An Introduction to Early Modern English Literature. He is Professor Emeritus of English Literature in the University of Sheffield.- Shop: buecher

Grocery: The Buying and Selling of Food in America , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 663min
In Grocery, best-selling author Michael Ruhlman offers incisive commentary on America's relationship with its food and investigates the overlooked source of so much of it - the grocery store. In a culture obsessed with food - how it looks, what it tastes like, where it comes from, what is good for us - there are often more questions than answers. Ruhlman proposes that the best practices for consuming wisely could be hiding in plain sight - in the aisles of your local supermarket. Using the human story of the family-run Midwestern chain Heinen's as an anchor to this journalistic narrative, he dives into the mysterious world of supermarkets and the ways in which we produce, consume, and distribute food. Grocery examines how rapidly supermarkets - and our food and culture - have changed since the days of your friendly neighborhood grocer. But rather than waxing nostalgic for the age of mom-and-pop shops, Ruhlman seeks to understand how our food needs have shifted since the mid-20th century and how these needs mirror our cultural ones. A mix of reportage and rant, personal history and social commentary, Grocery is a landmark book from one of our most insightful food writers. ungekürzt. Language: English. The View from Mount Joy: A Novel, Hörbuch, Digital, 278min
The View from Mount Joy, Lorna Landvik's delightfully quirky and intensely moving new novel, is about a man, a supermarket, the roads not taken, and the great, unexpected pleasures found in living a good life. When hunky teenage hockey player Joe Andreson and his widowed mother move to Minneapolis, Joe falls under the seductive spell of Kristi Casey, Ole Bull High's libidinous head cheerleader. Joe balances Kristi's lustful manipulation with the down-to-earth companionship of his smart, platonic girlfriend, Darva. But it is Kristi who will prove to be a temptation (and torment) throughout Joe's life. Years later, having once dreamed of a career in pro hockey or as a globetrotting journalist, Joe can't believe that life has deposited him in the aisles of Haugland Foods. But he soon learns that being a grocer is like being the mayor of a small town. For Joe, everyday life is its own roller-coaster ride, and all he wants to do is hold on tight. The path Kristi has charged down, on the other hand, is as wild as Joe's is tame: or at least that's how it appears. But who has really risked more? Who has lived more? And who is truly happy? As Joe discovers, sometimes people are lucky enough to be standing in the one place where the view of the world is breathtaking, if only they'll open their eyes to all there is to see. The Return of Fursey , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 487min
“Henceforth I will serve Evil. I’ll become a most depraved character. I’ll turn really wicked.” (Fursey)Having escaped being burnt at the stake, the reluctant sorcerer Fursey is back in this sequel, trying to make a quiet life for himself as a grocer in the realm of King Ethelwulf. But when his old enemies seize his wife, Fursey resolves to embrace evil and return to Ireland to reclaim her. Along the way, he'll have to contend with bloodthirsty Vikings, a melancholy vampire, an alcoholic wizard, a lovesick cow, and Satan himself, who is more determined than ever to get his hands on Fursey's soul.“The Return of Fursey shows no lessening at all in Wall’s quality of imagination ... as with the best of Charlie Chaplin, or of Anton Chekhov or O’Casey, the laughter is very akin to high art.” (Robert Hogan)“For anyone who doesn’t know Fursey, this opportunity to do so is not to be missed.” (George O'Brien, Dublin Book Review)“The Unfortunate Fursey and The Return of Fursey are not quaint esoterica for the specialist, folks, they are living masterpieces. They haven't dated slightly and are as fresh and as powerful as when they were first written.” (Darrell Schweitzer)“The Unfortunate Fursey and its 1948 sequel, The Return of Fursey, have been called the Irish equivalent to T.H. White’s The Once and Future King.... If you enjoy the dry, ironic humour of John Collier, Roald Dahl, Saki, or Jack Vance (and you should), you will like Fursey." The Monster: A Stephen Crane Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 122min
The Monster is considered one of Crane's top four stories, but is left out of many collections. Don't miss it. It's a wonderful telling about the town of Whilomville, in which Henry Johnson lives and other Crane stories are set as well, including "The Knife". Henry is a buddy of the Doctor's son, Jimmie. They mutually discuss the Doctor, his doings, and their shortcomings. Henry takes care of the Doctor's place, drives him on his country rounds, and serves as a mentor to Jimmie. Henry is a handsome black man respected and watched in the community. He has style and panache. He struts like a lord in his finery while having a good word for everyone. One night there is a terrible fire, which turns out to be at the Doctor's. Henry bravely saves Jimmie, but is permanently scarred in the process. The town is scarred of Henry because of his disfigurement. The Doctor stands up to him because he can. But the tragic last scene, as memorable as any disappointment in literature, is when his wife has invited 16 women over for her Wednesday tea and only one shows up. This one is the wife of the grocer who warns the Doctor that he better get Henry out of town or he will be ostracized. To console his wife he says, "Don't cry Grace. Don't cry." The story goes on with "As he sat holding her head on his shoulder, Trescott (The Doctor) found himself occasionally trying to count the cups. There were fifteen of them." Those 15 cups represent them being cast out of the town's center forevermore. Another Crane beauty. As with all Simply audiobooks, we provide a commentary in an afterword for those interested. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Deaver Brown. The Blue Hour: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 476min
The tight-knit residents of Blue Moon Mountain, nestled high in the Colorado Mountains, form an interconnected community of those living off the land, stunned by the beauty and isolation all around them. So when, at the onset of winter, the town veterinarian commits a violent act, the repercussions of that tragedy will be felt all across the mountainside, upending their lives and causing their paths to twist and collide in unexpected ways. The housecleaner rediscovering her sexual appetite, the farrier who must take in his traumatized niece, the grocer and her daughter, the therapist and the teacher reaching out to the world in new and surprising ways, and the ragged couple trapped in a cycle of addiction and violence. They will all rise and converge upon the blue hour - the l'heure bleu - the hour of twilight, a time of desire, lust, honesty. The strong, spirited people of Blue Moon Mountain must learn to navigate the line between violence and sex, tenderness and the hard edge of yearning, and the often confusing paths of mourning and lust. Writing with passion for rural lives and the natural world, Laura Pritchett, who has been called "one of the most accomplished writers of the American West", graces the land of desire in vivid prose, exploring the lengths these moving, deeply felt characters - some of whom we've met in Pritchett's previous work - will traverse to protect their own. Full cast of narrators includes Suzanne Toren, Emily Sutton-Smith, Suzanne Elise Freeman, Andrew Eiden, Traber Burns, Tanya Eby, Elisabeth Rodgers, Emily Woo Zeller, P. J. Ochlan, and Mark Bramhall. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Fass, Nicol Zanzarella, Carol Monda, Richard Powers, Amy Landon, Donald Corren, P. J. Ochlan.
