Aimless Love combines new poems with selections from four previous books - Nine Horses, The Trouble with Poetry, Ballistics, and Horoscopes for the Dead. Appearing regularly in The Best American Poetry series, his poems appeal to readers and live audiences far and wide and have been translated into more than a dozen languages. By turns playful, ironic, and serious, Collins's poetry captures the nuances of everyday life while leading the reader into zones of inspired wonder. In the poet's own words, he hopes that his poems "begin in Kansas and end in Oz." Touching on the themes of love, loss, joy, and poetry itself, these poems showcase the best work of this "poet of plenitude, irony, and Augustan grace" (The New Yorker). Mark of the Apple: [CODING HUMANS], Book 17 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 25min
Eve’s Journal - May 26th, 2040.Last night was a reality check! I didn’t realize that girls still drank and flaunted for sex the way the gruesome threesome did last night. I am just happy I made it home safe. I saw some things...I don’t know if they were real. It was weird...these boys seemed to be eating each other but their bodies didn’t seem to be made of flesh and blood - that is, they were breaking down the way code looks like in a computer program but made up of light that didn’t extend passed a few inches and then collected generating the same movement as liquid. Maybe those girls slipped me something. More likely a new video game for the omega phone. Not sure what to make of it. It was also strange that there were no other groups of people anywhere. In fact, now that I think about it, I haven’t even seen anyone other than Zuri since finals. I was thinking that it was due to students going home but now I think that something else is going on. I wish I had just stayed home and read more of Dr. Quasar’s book on time displacement and hypothetical physics. BTW James showed up and I had my first kiss! Oh, and it turns out, he is totally in love with me and has always been - he said. I feel off track now and jittery with excitement! I am going to sleep some more. I feel a little tire. I think it was from the drink I had. It was fun but kind of gave me a headache and more tired than usual this morning. After my nap I will get back to Dr. Quasar! On Monday, the internship begins. I know it is not too far from campus, I am pretty sure I can walk to it. I am so looking forward seeing James again. He says he needs to sleep for a couple days to sober up and get ready for the project, but I may see if he will be around. I will text him later, maybe. ungekürzt. Language: English. Michael Faraday: The Life and Legacy of the Influential 19th Century Scientist Who Pioneered Electromagnetism , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 79min
“Nothing is too wonderful to be true, if it be consistent with the laws of nature.” (Michael Faraday) "Without such freedom, there would have been no Shakespeare, no Goethe, no Newton, no Faraday, no Pasteur, and no Lister." (Albert Einstein, in a speech on intellectual freedom after fleeing Nazi Germany, October 3, 1933 ) On April 18, 1955, the phone of 38-year-old Life photographer Ralph Morse started ringing off the hook. By the end of the call, which came from a clearly keen but jittery Life editor, it was like Morse had downed a liter of the world's strongest coffee. The one and only Albert Einstein had died. Morse raced to Princeton Hospital, where Einstein had been admitted just three days earlier. He dipped into the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study and, using a case of premium scotch, persuaded the superintendent to unlock Einstein's office. Morse was able to compactly capture one of the most defining photographs of the man's life and his work. Viewers see the mound of journals and books strewn about on his desk, his pipe and tobacco tin serving as makeshift paper weights, and his blackboard, a wall of complex formulas and equations. It was in this very study that Einstein, perhaps the most celebrated genius in history, displayed the photographs of his five muses. Though only the framed portraits of Gandhi and a German composer have been pictured in Einstein's study, the faces of three other illustrious scientists are said to have once graced his walls. One of them was Michael Faraday, an endlessly luminous mind equipped with an unflagging hunger for knowledge, a hunger so ungovernable that not even poverty or social norms could stand in the way of his ambitions. Indeed, it was reportedly Einstein's expertise in the lives of Maxwell and Faraday, as well as his mastery of their work and accomplishments, that landed him his first job at the Swiss patent office after months of job-scouring. Moreover, Eins ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/116406/bk_acx0_116406_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.- Shop: Audible

Clameur
Inspired by the idea that music could be haunted by a speaking voice, Matthew Pollard and Peter Kenny's first collaboration This concert will fall in love with you was composed with unprecedented speed and intensity. Peter's first draught of the monodrama sequence arrived, Gothically enough, during the night of a full moon. It was only on meeting Matthew, however, did the strangely heartbroken persona Peter had created begin to find it's true context. After much collaborative discussion, the newly-revised monologues provided the basis for Matthew's spellbinding composition, the most recent addition to a small category of works combining spoken word with an instrumental ensemble. Mindful of the Sitwell-Walton Façade (1951) Matthew decided to directly relate the music to the texts, illustrating the monologues with rhythms and cadences derived from the impassioned tone of the words. Matthew accommodated Peter's voice either freely or within repeating 'episodes' of a few bars each. Matthew's unorthodox choice of instruments (piano, violin, marimba, vibraphone, speaking voice and mixed choir) allowed him to create a vivid variety of tone and texture with an orchestral range of pitch. Musically, the work divides the twelve monologues into three sections. The first and third sections use the theme in it's original, tonally consonant form. The middle section (Variations three to eight) employs an inverted version of the theme, releasing stranger, more dissonant harmonies and reflecting the slightly unhinged abstraction of the words at this point. Clameur (meaning a cry or a plea) is a setting for mixed choir and marimba of a poem from Peter's collection 'The boy who fell upwards'. If This concert will fall in love with you contains a voice somehow trapped inside a concert, Clameur continues the theme of confinement: 'I came to in a coffin/in London's riddled clay/crushed in a tube train/stuck in a tunnel'. The piece fell naturally into two parts. Part one opens with a vocalisation depicting the violent clamour of an Underground journey, with ostinatos driving the piece relentlessly through the labyrinth of the London Tube. This gradually unwinds into the second movement, where the tone is one of ecstatic nostalgia, reflecting the poem's escapist and homesick longing for Guernsey's granite cliffs. In Guernsey there is an ancient legal practice called Clameur de Haro. When a Clameur is raised (by declaiming the Lord's Prayer in French) all protagonists in a dispute must stop and take the matter to a higher authority. The Minotaur is the ultimate victim of confinement. This short poem is in the tradition of dramatic monologue going back to Robert Browning (via Modernists such as T.S.Eliot and Ezra Pound) and hovers between tragedy and comedy. For, almost wilfully, the Minotaur does not understand his own nature or that of the labyrinth in which he has been confined. Matthew completed the music for Minotaur on the morning of the recording and this is the first-and only-take. The right hand of Glen Capra's piano part describes a jittery, anxious surface, while the left hints at dark, subconscious motives. Together they create Minotaur's self-deceiving maze. Our sincere thanks to the choir: Jane Farrell, Tim Gillett, Tanya Izzard, Ric Morris, Anna Orchard, Basil Richmond, Tim Rose, Erika Schilsky, Gill Stephenson and Richard Wilson. Also to Simon Scardanelli location recording, sound engineering and mastering, Adrian Turner artist photos, and Phillip Adams of St Michael & All Angels Church, Brighton, where these recordings were made and 'This concert will fall in love with you' was given it's world premiere in 2010.- Shop: odax
