Das neue THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS-Album ist eine Sammlung der Gedanken und Inspirationen, die die Band (die neben Jared Leto, dem Kopf der Band, aus seinem Bruder Shannon Leto und Gitarrist Tomo Milicevic besteht) in mehreren Jahren on the road gesammelt hat. Die Songs spiegeln die Bereitschaft, Risiken einzugehen und ein wichtiges, sämtliche Spielregeln änderndes Album zu schaffen. Produziert wurde das langersehnte Nachfolger-Album von "A Beautiful Lie" von Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails), Steve Lillywhite (The Rolling Stones, U2) und THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS selbst. Für das Album haben THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS gleich zwei besondere Aktionen mit ihren Fans umgesetzt. So wird "This Is War" sage und schreibe über 700 verschiedene Cover haben, die sich alle aus Fotos von Fans zusammensetzen, die diese auf der Bandwebsite hochladen konnten. Des Weiteren kooperieren THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS' Jared Leto (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Shannon Leto (drums) und Tomo Milicevic (guitar) in einem aussergewöhnlichen Rahmen mit ihrer Fan-Community, The Echelon. Diese wurden im Frühjahr 2009 nach Los Angeles eingeladen zu einer einzigartigen, bisher nie da gewesenen Recordingsession zusammen mit der Band.
