Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King are great examples of fantastic nonviolents who died violently. I can never work that out. We're pacifists, but I'm not sure what it means when you're such a pacifist, you get shot. I can never understand that. (John Lennon)Mahatma Gandhi, an ambitious attorney turned simple, orthodox Hindu holy man, single-handedly came up with the philosophies of nonviolence and noncooperation that successfully dislodged the British empire from their long-held, tyrannical imperial rule over India. In this in-depth inspirational audiobook by well-known author, actor, and narrator Geoffrey Giuliano, the important and still-relevant story of this iconic social reformer is told along with rare, unheard recordings of the Mahatma himself. This imperative sociopolitical, philosophical, esoteric profile of courage is as important today as it was at the end of the British rule, wherein we witness similar oppressive pressures by major powers such as the United States of America against its own minority population. Here is the story of a soft-spoken, determined man who not only asked seminal questions at the right time but also came up with powerful solutions to the mass oppression of a populace unwilling to live under the thumb of a foreign dictatorial power. This Icon audiobook exclusive is perfect for all students of political history, social reformation, the spiritual science of yoga, curious commuters, and all school and university systems. ungekürzt. Jews and the Military is the first comprehensive and comparative look at Jews' involvement in the military and their attitudes toward war from the 1600s until the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. Derek Penslar shows that although Jews have often been described as people who shun the army, in fact they have frequently been willing, even eager, to do military service, and only a minuscule minority have been pacifists. Penslar demonstrates that Israel's military ethos did not emerge from a vacuum and that long before the state's establishment, Jews had a vested interest in military affairs. Spanning Europe, North America, and the Middle East, Penslar discusses the myths and realities of Jewish draft dodging, how Jews reacted to facing their coreligionists in battle, the careers of Jewish officers and their reception in the Jewish community, the effects of World War I on Jewish veterans, and Jewish participation in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Penslar culminates with a study of Israel's War of Independence as a Jewish world war, which drew on the military expertise and financial support of a mobilized, global Jewish community. He considers how military service was a central issue in debates about Jewish emancipation and a primary indicator of the position of Jews in any given society. Deconstructing old stereotypes, Jews and the Military radically transforms our understanding of Jews' historic relationship to war and military power. ungekürzt. Language: English. Insults are part of the fabric of daily life. But why do we insult each other? Why do insults cause us such pain? Can we do anything to prevent or lessen this pain? Most importantly, how can we overcome our inclination to insult others? In A Slap in the Face, William Irvine undertakes a wide-ranging investigation of insults, their history, the role they play in social relationships, and the science behind them. He examines not just memorable zingers, such as Elizabeth Bowen's description of Aldous Huxley as "The stupid person's idea of a clever person", but subtle insults as well, such as when someone insults us by reporting the insulting things others have said about us: "I never read bad reviews about myself," wrote entertainer Oscar Levant, "because my best friends invariably tell me about them." Irvine also considers the role insults play in our society: They can be used to cement relations, as when a woman playfully teases her husband, or to enforce a social hierarchy, as when a boss publicly berates an employee. He goes on to investigate the many ways society has tried to deal with insults - by adopting codes of politeness, for example, and outlawing hate speech - but concludes that the best way to deal with insults is to immunize ourselves against them: We need to transform ourselves in the manner recommended by Stoic philosophers. We should, more precisely, become insult pacifists, trying hard not to insult others and laughing off their attempts to insult us.A rousing follow-up to A Guide to the Good Life, A Slap in the Face will interest anyone who's ever delivered an insult or felt the sting of one-in other words, everyone. ungekürzt. Martin Luther King Jr. was a cautious 19-year-old rookie preacher when he left Atlanta, Georgia, to attend seminary up north. Immediately at Crozer Theological Seminary, King, or "ML" back then, found that he was surrounded by a white staff and white professors. Even his dorm room had once been used by wounded Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.  His fellow seminarians were almost all older; soldiers who'd fought in World War II, pacifists who'd chosen to resist fighting. Young and alone, it would take the friendships of Walter McCall, Horace Whitaker, and the mentorship of Rev. J. Pius Barbour to begin to grow in this new environment.  During seminary, ML was a prankster and a late-night, chain-smoking pool player who fell in love with a white woman while facing discrimination from students and the surrounding area of Chester, Pennsylvania. In class, ML performed well, but started a habit of plagiarizing that extended throughout his academic career. Between the years 1948-1951, ML King Jr. delivered dozens of sermons around the Philadelphia area, had a gun pointed at him twice, and eventually became student body president. In the end, his experiences at Crozer shaped him into a man ready to take on even greater challenges. The Seminarian is the first full-length narrative and definitive account of MLK's years as a divinity student at Crozer Theological Seminary. Long passed over by biographers and historians, this three-year period in King's life was vital in preparing him for his difficult road ahead. Originally, a proponent of the “just war theory”, Rev. McDonagh shows how he has transcended his original position due to his working for peace around the world. He gives the history and the limitations of the just war theory and insists the believers as individuals and the Church as a whole need to work to break our addiction to violence as a way of solving human conflict. He quotes Eisenhower, the great general of WWII and president of the United States: “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies a theft from those who hunger and are not fed and those who are cold and are not clothed: this world in arms is not spending money alone but the sweat of its labor, the genius of its scientist, the hope of its children.” He calls upon the disciples of Christ to fulfill their priestly, prophetic and kingly tasks as captured in the Sermon on the Mount. The priestly task affirms the transcendence and power of God. The prophetic urges us to take care of our neighbors, the weak, the widow, the orphan, the stranger. The kingly task is to wisely organize a better society. The speaker challenges the listener to consider the possibility that war as a way of resolving conflict can be overcome. However, he illustrates that there are terrible risks in peace as well as in war. He challenges the traditional pacifists to leave their ivory towers and get involved with the difficult and thankless tasks of dealing with the real world with its enormous problems. This is a thought-provoking program of faith. After hearing this you will understand the depth and breath and profound longing that comes from our liturgical greeting “Peace, be with you”.
