Author of the New York Times best seller White Girl Problems and Psychos, Babe Walker faces her most daunting challenge yet - suburbia - in the third caustically witty White Girl Problems book. Babe Walker thought she had done it all. After all, she's survived the highly exclusive social hierarchies of Bel Air, traipsed around Europe in true white-girl fashion, and left her mark on several of the best rehab facilities in the United States. But now Babe is about to enter a terrifying new world: Middle America. After a freak accident that was definitely not Babe's fault, her estranged mother offers her the perfect escape from LA: an invite to her grandfather's 80th birthday party in Maryland, of all places. Babe's journey throws her headlong into elementary school classrooms full of small, unfashionable people; pizza buffet restaurants that will haunt her nightmares; and eventually back to Los Angeles, thank goodness. Tossed together with her cousins - basic preteen Cara and mature and preternaturally stylish Knox - Babe learns that connecting with someone on an intimate, familial level might be the most rewarding experience there is. Besides being thin, of course. Hysterical, unapologetic, and as unfiltered as ever, Babe Walker proves again to be the "urban socialite you love to hate" (Time), and she can only hope the population is ready for American Babe. ungekürzt. 2129 AD: The long-awaited war approaches. Young countries make one kind of mistake, while old countries make another. For the Unity, the lone surviving high-tech and forward-thinking remnant of a once-vital America, war represents a final chance to liberate the backward and unfashionable Midlands from their centuries-long nightmare of freedom and self-determination. War breeds opportunity and danger. Young Malila Chiu, once a hero of the Unity, emerges from the jungle to deliver a dire message to a beleaguered America: the Deep Scorch, a polyarchy of sentient plants, declares itself to be a potent ally - or a dangerous foe. Familiar and distrustful of the Scorch for much of his long life, Jesse Johnstone stays by Malila’s side for the sake of their love. The grand architect of the war, Unity General Eustace Jourdaine, recovering from grievous injuries, rallies to lead his troops into battle in the hopes of winning a new empire - but for whom? All the while, within the bowels of the Unity, American spies, William Butler, Hecate, and Elise, delve into the secrets of the CORE and their own mortality to thwart the invasion. Even as combat and betrayal swirl around him, the Old Man learns too late that this latest battle with the Unis may be his final one. Malila of the Scorch completes the Malila/Jesse Trilogy that started with Outland Exile and continued with Exiles’ Escape. ungekürzt. The third book in Charles Bowden’s “accidental trilogy” that began with Blood Orchid and Blues for Cannibals, Some of the Dead Are Still Breathing attempts to resolve the overarching question: How can a person live a moral life in a culture of death? As humanity moves further into the 21st century, Bowden continues to interrogate our roles in creating the ravaged landscapes and accumulated death that still surround us, as well as his own childhood isolation, his lust for alcohol and women, and his waning hope for a future. We witness post-Katrina New Orleans and terrorist-bombed Bali; we encounter our shared actions with the animal world and the desirous need for consumption; we see the clash and erosion of our physical and figurative borders, the savagery of our own civilization. A man of his time and out of time, Bowden seeks acceptance and a will to endure what may lie ahead. The book is published by University of Texas Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks."Bowden manages to write about these currently unfashionable topics with humor, style, and laconic compression." (Edward Abbey)"Here is the new American nature writing - resourceful, funny, personal, full of good facts, words of the locals, hard-hitting but not self-righteous." (Gary Snyder)"Bowden is a blood-and-guts journalist with a poet’s sensibility, a noirish naturalist, a ferociously inquisitive witness to life’s glory and horror." (Booklist) ungekürzt. Untimely Considerations contain four essays: 'David Strauss - Writer and Confessor'; 'On the Use and Abuse of History for Life'; 'Schopenhauer as Educator'; and 'Richard Wagner at Bayreuth'. The essays date from the early part of Nietzsche’s life when his Romantic view on life and art was coloured by the powerful writings and personalities of such figures as Schopenhauer and Wagner - as the titles of two of the essays proclaim. Published between 1873 and 1876, they were presented under the umbrella title 'Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen', which has been variously translated as 'Thoughts Out Of Season', 'Untimely Meditations', 'Unfashionable Observations' - and 'Untimely Considerations'. They reflect his early interest particularly in culture, philosophy, and the interplay between art, science and life - topics which he would revisit over the following years. In ‘David Strauss: the Confessor and Writer’, he labels Strauss - a prominent Protestant theologian of the time - as a Philistine, in humorous but derogatory style. In ‘On the Use and Abuse of History for Life’ Nietzsche sets out to re-examine the role of history in informing contemporary life, and, controversially promotes the importance of individual ‘great men’ rather than the ‘masses’. This theme is continued, in a way, in the third essay, ‘Schopenhauer as Educator’, where he lauds those individual and honest qualities of his philosophic mentor. However, Nietzsche faced more difficulty with the final essay - where he considers both the work and the personality of Wagner - because his own attitudes towards the challenging composer were changing. These four works together present a fascinating portrait of the younger Nietzsche emerging into the highly charged and figure he was to become. Translations: David Strauss and Richard Wagner - Anthony M Ludovici ; On the Use and Abuse of History for Life - Ian Johnston; Schopenhauer as Educator by Adrian Collins. ungekürzt. There's $5,000 on the line - and he can't resist her. Steve bets his friend Jeff he would spend his vacation in the Philippines relaxing on the beach, without succumbing to the charms of a Filipino bar girl. And hot, beautiful young Asian babes.Too good to be true, Steve figures. Just exaggerated Asian sex stories.Besides, he sits on the wrong side of age 40. How can Philippines sex be for him? [...] Dem Verfasser ist ein großer Wurf gelungen." Christoph Böhr, in Die TagespostWolfram Hogrebe practices a mode of thinking that all too many all too modern philosophers would like to ban as unfashionable and outmoded, namely: metaphysics. Bracing himself against this curent, Wolfram Hogrebe claims that, quite to the contrary, one of the tasks of our time is precisely to rethink metaphysics. This book attempts to unfold clarification strategies from exemplary philosophical questions, all of which explore enigmatic border zones from which no one is easily able to extricate himself. Absences in creative processes, the birth of intentionality, the switch from the monstrous object to the monstrous subject, the release of creativity from fuzzy semantic relationships, the meaning of education in processes of conciliatory acceptance, forms as the eyes of things, and finally cosmology as poetics: The salvation of an unavoidable mysteriousness is the subject of a new metaphysics.

Welcome to the story to end all stories. Two decades of literary League lunacy have all been building to this, the most ambitious meta-comic imaginable. After an epic twenty-year journey through the entirety of human culture - the biggest cross-continuity 'universe' that is conceivable - Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill conclude both their legendary League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and their equally legendary comic-book careers with the series' spectacular fourth and final volume, The Tempest. Tying up the slenderest of plot threads and allusions from the three preceding volumes, The Black Dossier, and the Nemo trilogy into a dazzling and ingenious bow, the world's most accomplished and bad-tempered artist-writer team use their most stylistically adventurous outing yet to display the glories of the medium they are leaving; to demonstrate the excitement that attracted them to the field in the first place; and to analyse, critically and entertainingly, the reasons for their departure.Opening simultaneously in the panic-stricken headquarters of British Military Intelligence, the fabled Ayesha's lost African city of Kor and the domed citadel of 'We' on the devastated Earth of the year 2,996, the dense and yet furiously-paced narrative hurtles like an express locomotive across the fictional globe from Lincoln Island to modern America to the Blazing World; from the Jacobean antiquity of Prospero's Men to the superhero-inundated pastures of the present to the unimaginable reaches of a shimmering science-fiction future. With a cast-list that includes many of the most iconic figures from literature and pop culture, and a tempo that conveys the terrible momentum of inevitable events, this is literally and literarily the story to end all stories. Originally published as a six-issue run of unfashionable, outmoded and flimsy children's comics that would make you appear emotionally backward if you read them on the bus, this climactic magnum opus also reprints classic English super-team publication The Seven Stars from the murky black-and-white reaches of 1964. A magnificent celebration of everything comics were, are and could be, any appreciator or student of the medium would be unwise to miss The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume IV: THE TEMPEST.Co-Published by Top Shelf Productions (US) and Knockabout (UK).
