The Sufism of the Rubaiyat Or the Secret of the Great Paradox  By Norton F. Hazeldine  Narrated by Denis Daly  Little is known of Norton F. Hazeldine, whose version of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam was published in 1908. It is not stated whether this was an actual translation, although it appears to be an extensive reworking of the fourth or fifth edition of the translation by Edward Fitzgerald.  In the translation, which is in prose, Hazeldine elaborates heavily on religious elements in Omar's succinct verse, turning it into a kind of spiritual allegory. He presents his intention in the preface: In placing this volume before the public, I only hope that I may be able to convey to my readers the higher and deeper truths of this most famous of Persian Poets, who so ably attempted to portray to his countrymen the benevolent God the subtle life within the grosser of our material forms. ungekürzt. When Gavin’s son, Kenneth, followed him into the Police Service, neither of them thought that he would make the headlines (or the statistics) as a valiant officer killed in the course of his duty. However, only days before Christmas, a routine raid on a cannabis farm turns into tragedy when Kenny is mown down by a fast-moving motor vehicle while attempting to arrest one of the gang. Was this a bid to free the suspect? Or perhaps an attempt to silence him before he can reveal gang secrets to the police? Or was it a personal attack on PC Kenneth Hughes himself? DCI Jonah Porter comes out of retirement to lead the hunt for this vicious killer, ably supported by his assistant, Bernie, and a team of detectives. Meanwhile Gavin and his wife, Chrissie, struggle to learn to live with the sudden loss of their only son in this poignant story of heroism and grief. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Holy Mark is the story of one reluctant priest caught between the cynicism of his own Southern upbringing and the political machinations of the Roman Catholic Church. In this disturbingly memorable novel about a wayward priest set in late 20th-century New Orleans, Alexander explores familial revenge, rails against the hypocrisy of the Roman Catholic Church, and creates a likable narrator guilty of heinous acts. Father Tony is born with a red birthmark on his head, which his grandmother claims is a sign that he is to become a priest; a prophecy he fulfills, eventually finding his calling working with disadvantaged young boys. Though he fancies himself a modern-day Saint John Bosco, Father Tony's relationship with some boys becomes sexual, and he endeavors to outwit his family and the Church to save himself. Alexander ably captures the essence of parochial education in the 1970s and '80s, having himself taught in Catholic schools. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rene Maggio. A Popular History of France from the Earliest Times, Volume V, by François Guizot. Translated by Robert Black.  François Pierre Guillaume Guizot (1787-1874) was a French historian, orator, and statesman. He opposed King Charles X’s efforts to usurp legislative power in France and worked strenuously to uphold a constitutional monarchy following the July Revolution of 1830. He served in the government of Louis Philippe, as the minister of education, 1832-1837, ambassador to London, foreign minister 1840-1847, and finally, prime minister of France from September 19, 1847 to February 23, 1848.  Throughout the 1820s and 1830s, Guizot became engrossed in research into his country’s past - research that would ultimately lead to six volumes covering the history of his country. The series A Popular History of France from the Earliest Times is a captivating and well-documented glimpse into the country’s rich past, ably translated from the French by Robert Black and first published in 1898. Volume V covers France’s history from the rise of Henry IV (Henry of Navarre) in 1589 to the death of Louis XIV in 1715. ungekürzt. The loss of America was a stunning and unexpected defeat for the powerful British Empire. Common wisdom has held that incompetent military commanders and political leaders in Britain must have been to blame, but were they? This intriguing audiobook makes a different argument. Weaving together the personal stories of 10 prominent men who directed the British dimension of the war, historian Andrew O'Shaughnessy dispels the incompetence myth and uncovers the real reasons that rebellious colonials were able to achieve their surprising victory. In interlinked biographical chapters, the author follows the course of the war from the perspectives of King George III, Prime Minister Lord North, military leaders including General Burgoyne, the Earl of Sandwich, and others who, for the most part, led ably and even brilliantly. Victories were frequent, and in fact the British conquered every American city at some stage of the Revolutionary War. Yet roiling political complexities at home, combined with the fervency of the fighting Americans, proved fatal to the British war effort. The audiobook concludes with a penetrating assessment of the years after Yorktown, when the British achieved victories against the French and Spanish, thereby keeping intact what remained of the British Empire. ungekürzt.
