American Notes , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 681min
In 1842, Charles Dickens visited America. His reception was somewhat colder than that which usually greeted him - already a successful author in both Britain and the United States. This lack of enthusiasm from the Americans was partly due to his criticism of the pirating of English books in that country and partly due to his outspoken distaste for the custom of slavery in the Southern states. He wrote in the preface to American Notes, 'Prejudiced I am not, and never have been, otherwise than in favour of the United States. I have many friends in America. I feel a grateful interest in the country. I hope and believe it will successfully work out a problem of the highest importance in the whole human race. To represent me as viewing America with ill nature, coldness or animosity is merely to do a very foolish thing, which is always a very easy one!' Despite this placatory tone, one American reviewer spoke thus of American Notes: 'The most trashy...the most contemptible...the essence of balderdash, reduced to the last drop of silliness and inanity'. Poems 1962-2012
WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE The collected works of the inimitable Pulitzer Prize-winning poet It is the astonishment of Louise Glück's poetry that it resists collection. With each successive book her drive to leave behind what came before has grown more fierce, the force of her gaze fixed on what has yet to be imagined. She invented a form to accommodate this need, the book-length sequence of poems, like a landscape seen from above, a novel with lacunae opening onto the unspeakable. The reiterated yet endlessly transfigured elements in this landscape-Persephone, a copper beech, a mother and father and sister, a garden, a husband and son, a horse, a dog, a field on fire, a mountain-persistently emerge and reappear with the dark energy of the inevitable, shot through with the bright aspect of things new-made. From the outset ("Come here / Come here, little one"), Gluck's voice has addressed us with deceptive simplicity, the poems in lines so clear we "do not see the intervening fathoms." From within the earth's bitter disgrace, coldness and barrenness my friend the moon rises: she is beautiful tonight, but when is she not beautiful? To read these books together is to understand the governing paradox of a life lived in the body and of the work wrested from it, the one fated to die and the other to endure.- Shop: buecher

My Darling Arrow , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 706min
Narration by Sarah Puckett and Jason Clarke.Darling Arrow,I shouldn’t be writing this. It’s not as if I’m ever going to send you this letter, and there are a million reasons why.First of all, I was sent to this reform school as a punishment for a petty, totally inconsequential crime. Not to ogle the principal’s hot son around the campus.Second of all, you’re a giant jerk. You’re arrogant and moody and so cold. Sometimes, I think I shouldn’t even like you.But strangely, your coldness sets me on fire. The way your athletic body moves on the soccer field and the way your powerful thighs sprawl across that motorcycle of yours make me go inappropriately breathless. But that’s not the worst part. The worst part is that you, Arrow Carlisle, are not only the principal’s hot son. You also happen to be the love of my sister’s life. And I really shouldn’t be thinking about my sister’s boyfriend or rather fiancé (I overheard a conversation about the ring that I shouldn’t have). Now, if I can only stop writing you these meaningless letters that I’ll never send, and you’ll never read.Never yours,SalemNote: This book is a stand-alone, and it does not contain cheating. ungekürzt. Fallen , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 628min
The air was all gone, and coldness overtook her, as though she had fallen into icy water and was sinking into the blackness. Her stomach churned, as it was wont to do these days. He would not marry her. She was ruined. The arrival of two eligible gentlemen at Netherfield Park sends ripples of excitement through nearby Meryton. But Mr Bingley and Mr Darcy are not the only additions to the neighbourhood raising eyebrows. An unremarkable cottage in the woods between Netherfield and Meryton also has new tenants. One of them — a lively little girl with an adventurous spirit, a love of the outdoors, and a past shrouded in mystery — draws the notice of more than one local.Elizabeth Bennet — young, intelligent, and unfashionably independent — forms a poor first impression of the haughty Mr Darcy. On closer acquaintance, and against her better judgment, her disgust begins to give way to more tender feelings. Yet standing in the way of any potential romance is the closely guarded history of a certain little girl in a cottage in the woods. Elizabeth might be ready to disclose her hidden affections, but she is about to learn that some things are better kept secret, and some hearts are safer left untouched. ungekürzt. Language: English. Boy Dreamer: An Artist's Memoir of Identity, Awakening, and Beating the Odds , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 476min
The year is 1957. Four-year-old Paul Ecke sits timidly at a foreign kitchen table, eating the first inferior meal of many in a foster home. Longing for his beloved mother, he sees her only on short weekend visits that grow more infrequent over time, as she tries unsuccessfully to hide a nervous breakdown along with yet another growing pregnancy. Struggling to endure the strict rules of the house and the coldness of his foster parents, Paul begins to live in his creative mind where everything is possible and the grandest of dreams take flight. But after his family reunites, the adults he relies on both crumble and damage, as improprieties occur and secrets are slowly revealed that add more layers to the complexity of a visibly sensitive boy's view of the world.Despite - or perhaps because of - the emotional angst, complicated sexual identity issues, and deep loss he experiences, Paul cultivates a profound gift of creative genius. Vibrant with candor and resonant with details of coming of age in '60s and '70s California, as well as of bravely thriving for a decade with cancer, Boy Dreamer is a moving and ultimately triumphant story of a man who discovers his truth and courageously lives it, in a life brimming with love, art, gratitude, and beauty. ungekürzt. That's Mine, This is Yours: A BBC Radio 4 dramatisation, Hörbuch, Digital, 43min
A BBC Radio 4 romantic comedy about the separation of Sam (Alex Jennings) and Juliet (Tamsin Greig). That's Mine, This is Yours was originally broadcast as the 'Afternoon Play' on 4 May 2011. Sam and Juliet are to divorce. We join them as they meet to divide up their possessions in the house they've shared ever since they married. As they discuss what belongs to whom we learn all we need to know about their characters, what drew them together and what has driven them apart. We'll also learn if there is still some hope for them, even on the eve of their separation. The early signs are not good. They seem to have drifted apart and to have very little in common. Sam is an avid hoarder and collector; not of anything of great value, simply things that he feels should be kept together. For example he owns a single example of every toy ever given away with a McDonald's Happy Meal. Juliet's drive and decisiveness, once so sexy and stimulating, to him now feel like coldness and self-obsession. But is there still some way back from the brink for the couple? Starring Tamsin Greig (The Archers, Episodes, Love Soup) as Juliet and Alex Jennings (Goldfish Girl) as Sam, with Eleanor Butters as Amanda. Language: English. Bill ran an insurance business that was doing really well and always stayed longer hours than needed, and his new bride was alone in a big empty house that should have been full of love. Susan tried her best to get Bill to notice her more, but it was no use. Bill started sleeping on the couch and sometimes would come home later than any normal husband would that loved his wife. One night Susan got out of bed and went downstairs to the living room where Bill was sleeping. She turned on the light and as she was standing with both hands on her hips she noticed something red on his collar. She bent over and grabbed the neck of his collar and smelled it and said, "Just what I thought?" She shook him to wake him up, but he was too drunk that it would take more than just a few shakes to wake him up. She said, "I know just the thing to wake this cheating man up." Susan had all she could take from his coldness, and took the beer bottle out of his hand, and broke it over his head. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Luke Smith.
