Campaign , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 215min
On February 1, 2016, the date of the Iowa caucus, David Breskin began a project that would carry him through the American presidential election. An ex-journalist, Breskin set out to "cover" this most strange and historic election, under the pressure of a reporter's daily deadline, by writing one poem a day. He created a deliberately awkward, rollickingly restrictive form - seven beats per line, 11 lines per poem - and, noting our preference for the convenience of sound-bite news and junk-food polls over more nutritious fare, called them "7-11s". The result is Campaign, a fierce, prescient, oddly moving and scathingly funny book. No one is spared (not Ted, not Marco, not Carly, not Hillary nor Bernie nor The Donald, not the Pope nor Scalia nor even Jeb!) as Breskin shines a searching light on the hubris and folly of our would-be leaders. Yet he also captures what is fine about America and Americans, even under siege. "Smashed glass of freedom, a toast / for this sad ballad country / that orphans its immigrants." Campaign is a record of the election unfolding in real time: its distractions and psychodramas laid bare, its bit-part players of single news cycles recycled, the silliness of its silly season skewered. All the while, the drumbeat of essential issues sounds throughout these 77 beat poems, reminding us what was - and remains - at stake. The Road to Ruin: The Global Elites' Secret Plan for the Next Financial Crisis , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 647min
The best-selling author of The Death of Money and Currency Wars reveals the global elites' dark effort to hide a coming catastrophe from investors. A drumbeat is sounding among the global elites. The signs of a worldwide financial meltdown are unmistakable. This time the elites have an audacious plan to protect themselves from the fallout: hoarding cash now and locking down the global financial system when a crisis hits. Since 2014, international monetary agencies have been issuing warnings to a small group of finance ministers, banks, and private equity funds: The US government's cowardly choices not to prosecute J.P. Morgan and its ilk and to bloat the economy with a $4 trillion injection of easy credit are driving us headlong toward a cliff. As Rickards shows in this frightening, meticulously researched book, governments around the world have no compunction about conspiring against their citizens. They will have stockpiled hard assets when stock exchanges are closed, ATMs shut down, money market funds frozen, asset managers instructed not to sell securities, negative interest rates imposed, and cash withdrawals denied. If you want to plan for the risks ahead, you will need Rickards's cutting-edge synthesis of behavioral economics, history, and complexity theory. It's a guidebook to thinking smarter, acting faster, and living with the comforting knowledge that your wealth is secure. The global elites don't want this book to exist. Their plan to herd us like sheep to the slaughter when a global crisis erupts - and, of course, to maintain their wealth - works only if we remain complacent and unaware. Thanks to The Road to Ruin, we don't need to be. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: James Rickards. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/peng/002977/bk_peng_002977_sample.mp3. Smart Is the New Rich: Money Guide for Millennials , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 290min
Against a drumbeat of hopelessness about too much student debt and too few jobs requiring college degrees, Smart Is the New Rich: Money Guide for Millennials is a realistic and optimistic road map for millennials to save more, navigate their careers, invest in the stock market, and pay their student loans all at the same time. Time is a four-letter word of the very best kind for millennials. It is the single most important driver of wealth, and young people have it in spades. That's why the time is now for millennials to address their financial health and start planning their wealth. Just as you'd buy a guidebook before a trip through Central America or Europe, this is a guidebook for young people travelling for the first time in the money world: at work, with friends and significant others, negotiating a raise, renting an apartment or saving to buy a house, and, of course...retirement. Credit, debt, savings, investment, taxes, mortgages - this book is an all-in-one explanation of these topics and more, with checklists and other tools to make the plan clear and easy. Author Christine Romans is a CNN journalist who has been reporting on the events that have shaped the millennial generation, including the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the financial crisis of 2008, President Barack Obama's election and reelection, and the wave of protests from Occupy Wall Street to the Arab Spring to #JeSuisCharlie. These events have shaped the millennial generation - a generation that values experiences over materialism and wants more out of their jobs and money than the credit-fueled mirage that came before them. ungekürzt. The Air You Breathe: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 998min
[A] glorious, glittery saga of friendship and loss.... I read The Air You Breathe in two nights. (One might say I inhaled it.). (NPR)"Echoes of Elena Ferrante resound in this sumptuous saga." (O, The Oprah Magazine)"Enveloping...Peebles understands the shifting currents of female friendship, and she writes so vividly about samba that you close the book certain its heroine's voices must exist beyond the page." (People)The story of an intense female friendship fueled by affection, envy and pride - and each woman's fear that she would be nothing without the other. Some friendships, like romance, have the feeling of fate.Skinny, nine-year-old orphaned Dores is working in the kitchen of a sugar plantation in 1930s Brazil when in walks a girl who changes everything. Graça, the spoiled daughter of a wealthy sugar baron, is clever, well fed, pretty, and thrillingly ill behaved. Born to wildly different worlds, Dores and Graça quickly bond over shared mischief, and then, on a deeper level, over music. One has a voice like a songbird; the other feels melodies in her soul and composes lyrics to match. Music will become their shared passion, the source of their partnership and their rivalry, and, for each, the only way out of the life to which each was born. But only one of the two is destined to be a star. Their intimate, volatile bond will determine each of their fortunes - and haunt their memories.Traveling from Brazil's inland sugar plantations to the rowdy streets of Rio de Janeiro's famous Lapa neighborhood, from Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood back to the irresistible drumbeat of home, The Air You Breathe unfurls a moving portrait of a lifelong friendship - its unparalleled rewards and lasting losses - and considers what we owe to the relationships that shape our lives. ungekürzt. The Dynamics of Disaster , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 418min
Natural disasters bedevil our planet, and each appears to be a unique event. Leading geologist Susan W. Kieffer shows how all disasters are connected. In 2011 there were fourteen natural calamities that each destroyed over a billion dollars' worth of property in the United States alone. In 2012 Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast and major earthquakes struck in Italy, the Philippines, Iran, and Afghanistan. In the first half of 2013 the awful drumbeat continued - a monster super tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma; a powerful earthquake shook Sichuan, China; a cyclone ravaged Queensland, Australia; massive floods inundated Jakarta, Indonesia; and the largest wildfire ever engulfed a large part of Colorado. Despite these events, we still behave as if natural disasters are outliers. Why else would we continue to build new communities near active volcanoes, on tectonically active faults, on flood plains, and in areas routinely lashed by vicious storms? In this unique audiobook, Susan W. Kieffer provides a primer on most types of natural disasters: earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, landslides, hurricanes, cyclones, and tornadoes. By taking us behind the scenes of the underlying geology that causes them, she shows why natural disasters are more common than we realize and that their impact on us will increase as our growing population crowds us into ever more vulnerable areas. Kieffer describes how natural disasters result from "changes in state" in a geologic system, much as when water turns to steam. By understanding what causes these changes of state, we can begin to understand the dynamics of natural disasters. Finally, Kieffer outlines how we might better prepare for, and in some cases prevent, future disasters. She also calls for the creation of an organization, something akin to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is focused on pending natural disasters. ungekürzt. Language: English. Saint Brigid of Kildare: The Life, Legends, and Legacy of One of Ireland’s Patron Saints , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 97min
“It is a virtue and a prize to listen patiently to and put up with insults for the sake of God.” (Saint Brigid of Kildare) The drumbeat of horses’ hooves and clatter of chariot wheels echo through the rolling green hills of what will be known much later as the Emerald Isle. The driver is a lone woman whose long hair and homespun cloak whip through the wind behind her. Headstrong, confident, and intelligent, she blazes a trail that will change her nation forevermore, yet not in her own name or for her own sake, but for that of the God who sent her. This is a woman who will love the poor, feed the hungry, house the homeless, teach the ignorant, and defy the odds doing it all. This is Brigid of Kildare. Saint Brigid of Kildare survives as a model of the religious life, a woman who cared for the earth and its people, who strove for justice, equality, and peace. She is also a model of the disciple’s life, one who took Christ’s Great Commission to heart, traversing her nation to welcome other men and women into the fold and encourage the spread of Christianity wherever she went, through the gospel message of love for one’s neighbor and God’s saving grace. Because her legends trace back to pre-Christian times, Brigid is one of the most powerful religious figures in all of Irish history, as her story intertwines many layers of separate traditions, both pagan and Christian. That said, even as her story remains mixed with folk tales and pagan customs, along with St. Patrick, Brigid is credited with the evangelization of the entire Irish nation, turning the pagan island into a bastion of Catholic Christianity. She is often seen as a bridge between pagan and Christian Irish traditions, bringing commonality to a world divided by religious beliefs. She also represents a bridge between social classes, as she was the daughter of a king and a leading religious authority, but administered to the poorest of people and the lowliest of creatures. The Taking: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 569min
In one of the most dazzling books of his celebrated career, Dean Koontz delivers a masterwork of suspense that surpasses even his own inimitable reputation as a chronicler of our worst fears - and best dreams. In The Taking, he tells the story of a community cut off from a world under siege and the terrifying battle for survival waged by a young couple and their neighbors as familiar streets become fog-shrouded death traps. Gripping, heartbreaking, and triumphant in the face of mankind’s darkest hour, here is a small-town slice-of-doomsday thriller that strikes to the core of each of us to ask: What would you do in the midst of the Taking? On the morning that will mark the end of the world they have known, Molly and Neil Sloan awaken to the drumbeat of rain on their roof. It has haunted their sleep, invaded their dreams, and now they rise to find a luminous silvery downpour drenching their small California mountain town. A strange scent hangs faintly in the air, and the young couple cannot shake the sense of something wrong. As hours pass and the rain continues to fall, Molly and Neil listen to disturbing news of extreme weather phenomena across the globe. Before evening, their little town loses television and radio reception. Then telephone and the Internet are gone. With the ceaseless rain now comes an obscuring fog that transforms the once-friendly village into a ghostly labyrinth. By nightfall the Sloans have gathered with some of their neighbors to deal with community damage...but also because they feel the need to band together against some unknown threat, some enemy they cannot identify or even imagine. In the night, strange noises arise, and at a distance, in the rain and the mist, mysterious lights are seen drifting among the trees. The rain diminishes with the dawn, but a moody gray-purple twilight prevails. Soon Molly, Neil, and their small band of friends will be forced to draw on reserves of strength, courage, and humanity ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ari Meyers.
