A GIS-based Approach for Analyzing Wind Energy Development in SH
In this book, sets of GIS-models for analyzing technical and social aspects of wind energy planning within the predefined priority areas in Schleswig-Holstein were developed. Then, the outputs of the GIS-models were used to classify priority areas based on their level of controversy. At the end, future exclusions of each class of priority areas under 4 scenarios was simulated to investigate the opportunity costs of eliminations. Technical approach in this paper included analyses of production cost, electricity generation, economic feasibility, turbines placements, hub-height, and opportunity costs. Regarding social approach, visibility as a contributing factor in changing landscape was taken into consideration. On this point, firstly, likelihood of visibility after sitting of wind turbines in all priority areas was simulated. Secondly, after considering effects of landcover, priority areas were classified based on their level of visual impact.- Shop: buecher

Swell: A Waterbiography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 556min
These days, swimming may seem like the most egalitarian of pastimes, open to anyone with a swimsuit - but this wasn't always the case. In the 19th century, swimming was exclusively the domain of men, and access to pools was a luxury limited by class. Women were (barely) allowed to swim in the sea, as long as no men were around, but even into the 20th century they could be arrested and fined if they dared dive into a lake. It wasn't until the 1930s that women were finally, and reluctantly, granted equal access. This is the story of the women who made that possible, a thank you to the fearless 'swimming suffragettes' who took on the status quo, fought for equal access, and won. Part social history, part memoir, Swell uncovers a world of secret swimming in the face of these exclusions and shines a light on the 'swimming suffragettes'. It celebrates some amazing achievements, some ridiculous outfits and some fantastic swimmers who challenged the stereotypes of what women are capable of. It's also the story of how Jenny eventually came to be a keen swimmer herself. Swell is a joyful hymn to the sport and an exploration of why swimming attracts so many women. Ultimately it is a book dedicated to our brilliant swimming foremothers who collectively made it possible for any woman to plunge in with alacrity, anywhere we choose. ungekürzt. Language: English. The House on Haight Street: A Timeline 10/27/62 Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 155min
The House on Haight Street is a novella featuring Miranda Sullivan and Joe Calleja, culled from material originally included in the body of Warsaw Concerto (Book 13 of the Timeline 10/27/62 series). It did not make the "final cut" for two reasons: Firstly, I thought it was one sub-strand too many and therefore interrupted the flow of the rest of the narrative; and secondly, the book was getting very long even by my standards! Normally, such "exclusions" would never see the light of day. Having lopped a good 30- to 40,000 words out of Warsaw Concerto, I discovered that within the supposedly extraneous or distracting material I had removed, there was the bones of a story capable of standing on its own feet. Moreover, it was a story that serendipitously reintroduced two characters who will be important players in forthcoming instalments of the Timeline 10/27/62 saga, brought their stories up to date, and passed the test of adding another layer of context to the events playing out in both Warsaw Concerto (Book 13) and Eight Miles High (Book 14).I hope that you, my fans will allow me this indulgence. Mostly, I just hope you enjoy the novella. In either event, I am sure you will let me know what you think of The House on Haight Street! It is the first of a series of Timeline 10/27/62 stories that will appear in between the release of forthcoming Main Series books. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stephen M. Ray, Jr.. The Routledge Companion to Humanism and Literature (eBook, ePUB)
The Routledge Companion to Humanism and Literature provides readers with a comprehensive reassessment of the value of humanism in an intellectual landscape. Offering contributions by leading international scholars, this volume seeks to define literature as a core expressive form and an essential constitutive element of newly reformulated understandings of humanism. While the value of humanism has recently been dominated by anti-humanist and post-humanist perspectives which focused on the flaws and exclusions of previous definitions of humanism, this volume examines the human problems, dilemmas, fears, and aspirations expressed in literature, as a fundamentally humanist art form and activity. Divided into three overarching categories, this companion will explore the histories, developments, debates, and contestations of humanism in literature, and deliver fresh definitions of "the new humanism" for the humanities. This focus aims to transcend the boundaries of a world in which human life is all too often defined in terms of restrictions-political, economic, theological, intellectual-and lived in terms of obedience, conformity, isolation, and fear. The Routledge Companion to Humanism and Literature will provide invaluable support to humanities students and scholars alike seeking to navigate the relevance and resilience of humanism across world cultures and literatures.- Shop: buecher

Waking Occupations (eBook, ePUB)
The second collection from the acclaimed author of Admission Requirements. Waking Occupations confronts the obligations we owe to ourselves and to others to live in a creative, generative, and revolutionary way. It weighs the ties we have to family, to artists of the past and present, and to the next generation, to illuminate the cascade of global implications to our current times. The book is a four-part mediation on what it means to live on occupied land and colonial time, with a subject that has moved beyond arriving and departing and is waking each day to meet her commitments and to heal from complicities, exclusions, difficult truths and the pandemic of forgetting. It follows the figure of the female artist as a time travelling woman, embodied by mother and daughter, through the gallery of memory. The poems enact brief encounters with objects and events that hold us accountable to the political as personal. Finally, a set of anti-elegies mourn what the next generation has already lost, while searching for ancestral medicines and ceremonies that might exorcise us and address our alienation. Waking Occupations considers what we carry from previous generations and our liabilities to the cyclical nature of the work that uplifts us.- Shop: buecher

The Food Bondage: Making a Case for the Human Diet , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 237min
The idea of "good nutrition" is imparted to us from early childhood and reinforced through governmental dietary advice throughout our lifetime. This way of thinking about nutrition has, almost quite literally, been shoved down our throats for hundreds of years, but is it better for us than our natural diet? The starting point of the argument presented in The Food Bondage is this: “We don't eat the way we've evolved to eat.” This statement is pretty much uncontroversial because nobody claims that we eat according to our evolutionary past. Our species evolved with a nomadic diet, but for the last few thousand years, we have been eating according to a farmer’s diet. The phrase often used when referring to our dietary recommendations is evidence-based nutrition. This means that our nutritional guidelines are the best guidelines (based on evidence) for eating, according to our modern dietary model. The crux of the problem is that our modern diet is not our natural diet. It is an artificial regimen, and even its best version cannot compete with the diet with which we evolved. Instead of an evidence-based, traditional diet, we should move to our (preferably evidence-based) natural human diet. The author postulates that neither our traditional regimen nor popular alternative diets meet the criteria for optimal nutrition. After all, these eating recommendations are arbitrary. The starting points of our officially recommended diet are our crops and eating traditions. For alternative diets, it is simply guessing what foods are best suited for us. Consequently, these regimes propose fixed macro-nutrient ratios or the exclusions of particular food groups. Moreover, they focus only on what we should eat, forgetting about the importance of our eating schedule. The author further argues that, in spite of the claims that our original way of eating cannot be recreated, we can, in fact, determine the structure of the pre-agriculture human diet. ungekürzt. Illiberal Arts
The liberal capitalist world order that prevailed after 1989 is today in a stage of advanced disintegration. The collapse of this order exposes the illiberal core of its freedoms and forms of ownership shaped by the market: the violent unfreedoms of the dispossessed as well as the willingness of the propertied to use violence. Art, too, reveals itself as the venue of these forces and their exclusions: Through the downfall of liberality, the modern institution of "veranstaltlichte Kunst" ("institutionalized art", Arnold Hauser) and its social legitimacy are also increasingly called into question.Illiberal Arts is a search for forms concerning an artistic "Lebensarbeit" ("life's work", Lu Märten, publicist and art critic, 1879-1970) initiated with international artists, poets and authors. In the cracks of the decaying forms of market accumulation, anti-identitarian, communal horizons burst open, as do collective forms of perception and political spontaneities. The project subjects these to a practical test. For Lu Märten, "a person's whole life's work" was considered artistic; what was artistic didn't always have to become art. Perhaps what became art doesn't necessarily have to remain art either. With contributions by Juliana Spahr; Rosalind C. Morris; Aristilde Paz Justine Kirby;Övül Ö.
