Body Art: A Thriller , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 204min
Does everyone have a certain "type" they end up with, whether they want to or not? If Ray Carlucci's ex is anything to go by, Ray likes his men gorgeous, rebellious, and chock-full of issues. But now that Ray is single again, he has a shot at a fresh start - a very fresh start, since his tattoo shop was gutted by repo men and he can fit all his belongings in the trunk of a taxi. Ray's shiny new chauffeur's license lands him a job as a driver for an elderly couple on Red Wing Island. It's a cold fall, and since the Michigan island is the summer home to snowbirds who fly south for the winter, it's practically deserted - save for Ray's new household and a sculptor named Anton Kopec, who works day and night twisting brambles and twine into the distorted shapes of macabre creatures. Compelling, bizarre, and somewhat disturbing...not just the sculptures, but the artist, too. Ray has a feeling Anton is just his "type". When a dead body is unearthed by some workers and a freak ice storm traps them all on the island, Ray can't say for certain that his new flame isn't capable of murder - despite their scorching chemistry. ungekürzt. To Be Broken Into Freedom
This book is a story about a person who was a mess inside, who did not know how to live the Christian life. He eventually received a promise from God to be broken into freedom, and that is where the adventure started: pain, disorientation, struggles, confusion, and gutted within became his lot for many years. He was put on medication only to have to wait decades to start feeling normal again. Because of this he learned how to practice the Christian basics of confession, repentance in prayer, renewal of the mind and growing in dependance on Jesus. This helped him grow in the virtues of faith, hope, love and humility. His experience is an example of the Dark Night as described by Saint John of the Cross. This book chronicals my journey into darkness and how I navigated it out into the light. I eventually landed up in a hospital while in the darkness. There , the doctors tried to administer different medicines to see what would work. Unfortunately the doctors chose a medicine that worked but really slowly. Years later I would relapse. I was then put on the correct medication and began to make up lost ground like never before. I won't trade those years on the wrong medicine for anything. Yes it was hard, difficult, painful and the best place to renew my mind and eventually heal my heart. I would learn how to repent with God's help and mature in love.- Shop: buecher

Grand Scale Symphony: Anselm Kiefer at White Cube : Cv/Visual Arts Research, Book 241 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 13min
A review of Anselm Kiefer exhibition at White Cube Bermonday tours room by room, with analytic descriptions of the large scale works on view. Superstrings, the Norms, Gordian Knot One enters the massive White Cube Gallery in Bermondsey and finds oneself in a darkened avenue bordered by large vertical paintings. Vitrines framed with broad metal casing contain accumulations of mixed media, the Superstrings. On closer attention, scrawed on the glass formulas for the scientific specialist, e.g. in Vitrine number 1 to the left reads Vu+xqa i/2 kud(lodk)ekx, whatever that means. Behind this a confusion of coiled cord, tangled loops of white and black lengths, suspended against a bleached-out suggestion of industrial landscape, silhouetted shapes of buildings and chimneys. Another formula scrawled on the glass. V(Nkov):xeinx encased. Are these scientific string theory? (1) In this panel the bunched confusion of cords lies on a silvered textured ground, which may be canvas but resembles parchment. In the fourth vitrine is a mesh of wire squared grid imposed over an absolute forest of black cord, fused and gutted, with white cord disposed at the base. The message seems to be the toppled towers of science, corrupted by the sensual intuitive surge of the artwork. The formulae are reduced to a scrawled nonsense. Vitrine number 6 is a chaotic tangle of elements.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Selbie. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/184401/bk_acx0_184401_sample.mp3. Heroes Proved , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 856min
A globe-spanning, heart-pounding epic thriller of good vs. evil, political intrigue, and what it means to be a patriot - from New York Times best-selling author Oliver North. The year is 2032. The NRA has been outlawed; the U.S. military has been gutted; Conservative Christians, dubbed ANARKS, have been labeled a global conspiracy and have been largely driven underground. The Caliphate is now a superpower, residing in Israel. The White House is occupied by a repressive Progressive regime, obsessed with the upcoming presidential election. Then, the kidnapping of an MIT physicist who is privy to sensitive scientific information from a Houston energy conference by Islamic terrorists sets in motion a high-stakes international game of cat and mouse. Peter Newman, security consultant and former decorated war hero, is determined to rescue the scientist. The president, fearful that her reelection will be endangered by the reemergence of terrorism, will stop at nothing to keep the kidnapping a secret. The White House condemns the kidnapping as the work of ANARKS, and has the authorities label Newman an ANARK. Newman is forced to evade the law while also preparing a daring rescue with the help of his war hero father, a patriotic U.S. senator, and a band of special forces operatives. Fast-paced, gripping, and filled with authentic detail, North has crafted an edge-of-your-seat tale - and offers an ominous look into what can happen in an election year. ungekürzt. The City When It Rains , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 523min
On a rainy night in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen, a woman throws a doll from the fifth-floor window of a gutted tenement, then leaps herself. From his own apartment a few blocks away, freelance photographer David Corman listens to the radio reports as they come over his headset. Corman is a man at the edge, threatened with eviction, besieged by his wife’s attempt to regain custody of their daughter, yet reluctant to give up the life that permits him to roam the night. In the woman’s dying fall, he sees the chance to sell a story and perhaps buy some time. So he starts to probe deeper. Nothing prepares him for the odyssey he is about to undertake. As the path leads, dark and twisted, from the meanest streets of New York to the homes of the rich, he struggles to uncover the life of the woman who leaped into the rain. The more layers he strips away, however, the more puzzles confront him, until ultimately, the search turns back onto himself: the dead woman’s true tale reveals shocking truths about his own life. At last, what began as a simple search for a story becomes a fight for his own soul. Rich in character, complex in plot, The City When It Rains is a haunting, suspenseful novel of uncommon force, written with the stark beauty of the city it describes - passionate, resonant, a mystery in the deepest sense of the word. ungekürzt. This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1244min
In This Changes Everything Naomi Klein argues that climate change isn’t just another issue to be neatly filed between taxes and health care. It’s an alarm that calls us to fix an economic system that is already failing us in many ways. Klein meticulously builds the case for how massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to simultaneously reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies. She exposes the ideological desperation of the climate-change deniers, the messianic delusions of the would-be geoengineers, and the tragic defeatism of too many mainstream green initiatives. And she demonstrates precisely why the market does not - and cannot - fix the climate crisis, but will instead make things worse, with ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods, accompanied by rampant disaster capitalism. Klein argues that the changes to our relationship with nature and one another that are required to respond to the climate crisis humanely should not be viewed as grim penance, but rather as a kind of gift - a catalyst to transform broken economic and cultural priorities and to heal long-festering historical wounds. And she documents the inspiring movements that have already begun this process: communities that are not just refusing to be sites of further fossil fuel extraction but are building the next, regeneration-based economies right now. Can we pull off these changes in time? Nothing is certain. Nothing except that climate change changes everything. And for a very brief time, the nature of that change is still up to us. ungekürzt. Gideon Frayne has spent his whole working life as a policeman in the village of Dark on Bodmin Moor. It's not life in the fast lane, but he takes it very seriously, and his first missing-child case is eating him alive. When his own boss sends in a psychic to help with the case, he's gutted - he's a level-headed copper who doesn't believe in such things, and he can't help but think that the arrival of clairvoyant Lee Tyack is a comment on his failure to find the little girl. But Lee is hard to hate, no matter how Gideon tries. At first Lee's insights into the case make no sense, but he seems to have a window straight into Gideon's heart. Son of a Methodist minister, raised in a tiny Cornish village, Gideon has hidden his sexuality for years. It's cost him one lover, and he can't believe it when this green-eyed newcomer stirs up old feelings and starts to exert a powerful force of attraction. Gideon and Lee begin to work together on the case. But there are malignant forces at work in the sleepy little village of Dark, and not only human ones - Gideon is starting to wonder, against all common sense, if there might be some truth in the terrifying legend of the Bodmin Beast after all. As a misty Halloween night consumes the moor, Gideon must race against time to save not only the lost child but the man who's begun to restore his faith in his own heart. ungekürzt.
