Many dream of dropping everything and just traveling around the world. It's a common dream, but few imagine embarking on that journey by bicycle. Exposed to the elements, legs burning, all your possessions strapped to you and your bicycle--it doesn't paint a relaxing picture, but this is just what Pierre-Yves Tremblay did. Leaving his hometown of Chicoutimi, Quebec, in July 1994, Tremblay took a flight to Europe; from Paris he hopped on his bike and went for a long ride around the world that lasted all of 836 days. He traveled through Europe, past the deserts of the Middle East, then braved the Himalayas and rode through Southeast Asia and the wilds of Australia before finishing his journey by biking across the United States and arriving back home in Canada. Besides the sheer physical effort, this epic adventure is about a person confronting himself, alone with his bike, encountering life, its possibilities, and its limits, dealing with emotions and everything that compels him to keep going and persevere. It means exchanging greetings and sharing moments with people from many different cultures. It means overcoming hundreds of pitfalls only to keep on going. Fifteen and a half thousand miles later, this modern-day Ulysses invites us to read the precious journals he kept on his odyssey. Here you'll find out what really pushes great achievers to their limits. In this audiobook, the brilliant manager of Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign explains how Bernie took on the entire establishment and changed modern American politics for good.  When Jeff Weaver hopped in a car with Bernie Sanders in the summer of 1986, he had no idea the Vermont backroads would lead them all the way to the 2016 presidential campaign.  In How Bernie Won, Weaver tells listeners how Bernie built a movement that would sweep America and inspire millions. He vowed not to run a negative campaign. He would focus on policies, not personalities. He would not be beholden to big money. He would actually make America great.  Weaver also explains how they overcame significant challenges: a media that thrived on negative campaigns. A party that thrived on personalities. And a political system that thrived on big money. Weaver explains how Bernie beat them all and, in doing so, went from having little national name recognition when he entered the race to being one of the most respected and well-known people in the world by its end - because, Weaver argues, Bernie won the race.  He moved the discussion from the concerns of the 1 percent to those of the 99 percent. He forced the Democrats to remember their populist roots. And he showed that an outsider with real ideas and ways to get them done was more popular than someone propped up by backroom political sugar daddies.  From holding bags of “Bernie buttons” and picket-stick signs, to managing thousands of campaign workers, to looking ahead to 2020, Weaver chronicles the birth of a revolution that didn’t end in November 2016. It’s only just begun.   ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jeff Weaver. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/aren/003314/bk_aren_003314_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Winston! "Oh, hey," Chip said lamely, spinning on his heel. "I didn't think you were still here." Seeing Brenden's confused look, he clarified. "No limo." "Oh, yeah." Brenden looked down at his boots, the brown leather just scuffed enough to be fashionable. "I hopped an Uber over. I thought maybe you'd give me a ride back to the hotel so we could talk." "I see." Chip's jaw tightened slightly. "I have my bike, so that won't work, but I'll wait with you if you want to get that ride back. We can talk while we wait." "I was really hoping we could get some time alone to talk without being rushed," Brenden offered quietly. "I have a lot to say. Doesn't your bike have a passenger seat?" "Yeah." Chip's voice was clipped. "But I don't carry passengers." Not anymore, anyway, he thought to himself. Brenden had been the last person to sit behind him, clinging to his waist, as the powerful Harley had devoured the road. "Okay." Disappointment registered clearly on Brenden's face. "Will you come back to the hotel with me?" "Naw, man." Chip stared over his shoulder. "I can't, not tonight." "Winston, please?" Brenden's voice held a pleading note. "I really need your help." "Don't call me that," Chip snapped, sharper than he meant to, and then felt a trace of shame as the smaller man took a step back. "Sorry," Chip muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets. "I go by Chip now." Brenden nodded. "Chip, then. I really do need your help." Chip sighed, long and deep. "Get your ride scheduled and tell me what you need." ungekürzt. Language: English. General Ted Dane Jerolst is a master codesman. He kept a double top secret journal with his most intimate thoughts and experiences. His personal journey is to try and figure out and/or understand the souls inside of his body. He thinks it might be the Almighty, yet he ponders his own spirit and a soul of a man he killed in combat. Yet, he firmly believes aliens from another planet, while abducting him, implanted the entity living inside of him. He also has a devilish spirit that visits him from the dark craters of hell. He sometimes feels all five spirits/entities inside him at once. He also miraculously ponders things he can't quite comprehend and understand in this world and in the afterlife. His thoughts are that the entities are influencing him, but are they? He thinks they are the most secret spies in entity-like form - spying on him because he is a general with above top secret clearance higher than all else, and also a master code breaker. Are the entities truly from an alien world? Are the alien entities getting ready to invade planet Earth, or is it more than that? Has a ghost hopped into his body? Is he gifted in a godly way? Is it his own spirit guiding him? Or is the devilish spirit just visiting? Can it be all of the above? Five spirits of different magnitudes are projecting various mind stimulation and thoughts upon the general.... A man of truth and justice for the American way, a man that thinks clearly and down-to-earth in logical terms comes to the crossroads of five paths. Only one could be correct, and what happens when the general finds out the truth? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Roxanne Hill. In the 1950s, at the age of 14, Little Freddie King hopped a southbound freight train in McComb, Mississippi, fleeing the life of a sharecropper’s son in what was then the "worst part of the most intransigent state" in Jim Crow-era Dixie. Landing in New Orleans, he taught himself to play blues guitar, then found work performing at the city’s corner nightclubs, including one nicknamed the Bucket of Blood for its nightly eruptions of violence. Dodging bullets and drinking with abandon, he became a fixture in the subterranean blues scene. He played a time-breaking, low-down style of blues borne of a life of struggle, and followed a self-destructive course that ensured he never ran out of material. That is, until one drunken night, when his knife-wielding wife attacked him in a jealous rage, one of several brushes with tragedy that would change his life forever. Barry Yeoman, an award-winning journalist who began his career as a newspaper reporter in South Louisiana, first met King while making the 2009 radio documentary Still Singing the Blues. Since then, Yeoman has spent dozens of hours interviewing the bluesman, his friends and family. The result is an intimate and colorful portrait of one of New Orleans’ cultural treasures. Yeoman chronicles King’s journey from picking cotton in rural Mississippi to playing guitar on some of the world’s biggest stages, from spirit-seeing teenager who arrived in New Orleans with "not nary a copper cent" in his bib overalls to a self-effacing septuagenarian at the peak of his musical career - and one of the Crescent City’s last great country bluesmen. It’s a story about music, migration, race, faith, and resilience, and about the deepest of the Deep South during seven decades of profound upheaval. ungekürzt. Language: English. From the author of Welcome to Paradise, Now Go to Hell, a finalist for the PEN Center USA Award for Nonfiction It is likely not terribly surprising that surfers like to party. The 1960-'70s image, bolstered by Tom Wolfe and Big Wednesday, was one of mild outlaws. Tanned boys who refused to grow up, spending their days drinking beer and smoking joints on the beach in between mindless hours in the water. As the surf brands accidentally morphed into a multimillion- then multibillion-dollar industry beginning in the 1980s, however, the derelict portrait began to harm business. In order to achieve wild year-on-year growth that came to be expected, surf trunks, T-shirts and sunglasses had to be sold en masse through Midwestern mall stores. Moms in Des Moines did not want corn-fed junior to be a delinquent. And so the external surf image of the 1980s and '90s and into the present became Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton. Health, vitality, bravery, clean living, positive, and pure, with heavy doses of puritanism. Internally, though, surfing had moved on from booze and weed to its heart's true home, its soul's twin flame. Cocaine's rise in American popular culture as the choice of rich, white elites was matched, then quadrupled, within surf culture. The parties got wilder, the nights stretched longer, the stories became more ridiculously unbelievable. And there has been no stopping, no dip in passion. The surfer and his lover are entwined in gorgeously dysfunctional embrace. A forbidden love like Romeo and his Juliet, and few, if any, outside the insular surf world knew or know about this particular rhapsody. A byzantine ethic keeps interlopers far away. Bad behavior is also kept very well hidden, even from insiders, but evidence of psychosis rears its head from time to time. Overdoses, bar fights, surf contests, and murders and cover-ups. Cocaine + Surfing peels the curtains back on a hopped up, sometimes ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Pile. In the early morning of April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh drove into downtown Oklahoma City in a rented Ryder truck containing a deadly fertilizer bomb that he and his army buddy Terry Nichols had made the previous day. He parked in a handicapped-parking zone, hopped out of the truck, and walked away into a series of alleys and streets. Shortly after 9:00 A.M, the bomb obliterated one-third of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people, including 19 infants and toddlers. McVeigh claimed he'd worked only with Nichols, and at least officially, the government believed him. But McVeigh's was just one version of events. And much of it was wrong. In Oklahoma City, veteran investigative journalists Andrew Gumbel and Roger G. Charles puncture the myth about what happened on that day - one that has persisted in the minds of the American public for nearly two decades. Working with unprecedented access to government documents, a voluminous correspondence with Terry Nichols, and more than 150 interviews with those immediately involved, Gumbel and Charles demonstrate how much was missed beyond the guilt of the two principal defendants: in particular, the dysfunction within the country's law enforcement agencies, which squandered opportunities to penetrate the radical right and prevent the bombing, and the unanswered question of who inspired the plot and who else might have been involved. To this day, the FBI heralds the Oklahoma City investigation as one of its great triumphs. In reality, though, its handling of the bombing foreshadowed many of the problems that made the country vulnerable to attack again on 9/11. Law enforcement agencies could not see past their own rivalries and underestimated the seriousness of the deadly rhetoric coming from the radical far right. In Oklahoma City, Gumbel and Charles give the fullest, most honest account to date of both the plot and the investigation, drawing a vivid portrait of the unfailingly co ungekürzt. Language: English. At the height of the Great Depression, 250,000 teenagers were roaming America. Some left home because they felt they were a burden to their families; some fled homes shattered by the shame of unemployment and poverty; some left because it seemed a great adventure. Whether with the blessings of parents or as runaways, they hit the road and went in search of a better life. By summer 1932, the "roving boy" had become a fixture on the American landscape. The occasional girl was sighted, too, most passing unrecognized in male garb. Girls especially did not make the decision to hit the road lightly, for they were stepping into a world filled with danger. It was the same for young African-Americans, for whom the beckoning rails could be doubly perilous. One of the vital, neglected sagas of America in the 1930s, the story of the boxcar boys and girls has seldom been told. Riding the Rails draws primarily on letters and oral histories of 3,000 men and women who hopped freight trains, their incredible journeys an unforgettable and moving story. We see the decade of the Great Depression entirely through the eyes of young people surviving a landscape of ruin, growing up fast in speeding boxcars, living in hobo jungles, begging on the streets and running from the police and club-wielding railroad guards. Riding the rails was a rite of passage for a generation of young Americans which profoundly shaped their lives. Self-reliance, compassion, frugality, and a love of freedom and country are at the heart of the lessons these they learned. Their memories are a mixture of nostalgia and pain; their later musings still tinged with the fear of going broke again. At journey's end, the resiliency of these survivors is a testament to the indomitable strength of the human spirit. It is also an inspiration to all who share a nostalgia for the road and the freedoms sought there. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pam Rossi. The stories in this book are all true. Its author has been held up at gunpoint at night on a road in Guatemala and shot with a machine gun in the chest and shoulder in Vietnam. He's come close to dying of thirst in the Sahara and freezing to death in the Himalayas. He's contracted malaria and typhoid fever in Ethiopia and hepatitis in India. There have been accidents involving motorcycles and automobiles. He's had close calls involving lions (twice), elephants (three times) and a rhino (once). He's visited over a hundred countries, seen revolutions, famines, wars, and panty raids, feasted in palaces and fasted in caves. He's discovered paradises, been saved by dolphins, hopped freight trains, danced with an 108-year-old woman, swam with sharks, frequented whore houses and opium dens, and met a man capable of revealing God. In the pages of this book you'll meet the queen of the Ecuadorian prison system, the Dalai Lama, Dick Cheney, a swami from Katmandu who makes his living picking up large stones with his penis, yak herders, tunnel rats, 300 pound go-go girls, deep sea divers, drug dealers, stock car drivers, Indonesian princes, Bolivian miners, beanheads, powder monkeys, hookers and saints. Between the stories the author gives advice to would-be travelers, describes six tropical paradises where you can live comfortably on five hundred dollars a month, and includes his personal lists of the best things in the world. Mr. Linnemeier hails from the Hoosier state. Today he treads the path of moderation, living contentedly in a small town, surrounded by friends and family. He claims to have abandoned most of his previous vices, and has the stated aim of dying peacefully in bed at ninety five. In his own words, "I'm not the kind of person that men automatically defer to. I don't usually make women's hearts beat faster when they see me across a crowded room." ungekürzt. Language: English.
