In this deeply researched and well-written study, Donald P. McNeilly examines how moderately wealthy planters and sons of planters immigrated into the virtually empty lands of Arkansas, seeking their fortune and to establish themselves as the leaders of a new planter aristocracy west of the Mississippi River. These men, sometimes alone, sometimes with family, and usually with slaves, sought the best land possible, cleared it, planted their crops, and erected crude houses and other buildings. Life was difficult for these would-be leaders of society and their families, and especially hard for the slaves who toiled to create fields in which they labored to produce a crop. McNeilly argues that by the time of Arkansas's statehood in 1836, planters and large farmers had secured a hold over their frontier home, and that between 1840 and the Civil War, planters solidified their hold on politics, economics, and society in Arkansas. The author takes a topical approach to the subject, with chapters on migration, slavery, non-planter whites, politics, and the secession crisis of 1860-1861. McNeilly offers a first-rate analysis of the creation of a white, cotton-based society in Arkansas, shedding light not only on the southern frontier, but also on the established Old South before the Civil War. ungekürzt. "When people ask me what has happened in my long lifetime I do not refer them to the newspaper files and to the authorities, but to (Sinclair's) novels." -George Bernard Shaw "Practically alone among the American writers of his generation, Sinclair put to the American public the fundamental questions raised by capitalism in such a way that they could not escape them." -Edmund Wilson Upton Sinclair's 1906 bestseller The Jungle is a startling and powerful novel depicting the plight of Jurgis Rudkus, a Slavic worker who immigrated to the United States in the early 20th Century for a better life. His dream of a finding a job, building a family, and buying a home are initially fulfilled in the Union Stock Yards in Chicago. Work in the meatpacking industry proves to be a harrowing and desperate existence, and his personal life is beset by a succession of hardships and tragedy. As bleak as his journey is, Jurgis finally finds his light in a new-found political ideology. The Jungle is considered profoundly important in its exposure of despair at the margins of working-class life, and the atrocious descriptions of the unsanitary conditions in the meatpacking process. The novel led to revolutionary reform of the industrial food industry and workers' rights, and powerfully addresses many of the same issues that we are still grappling with today. With a stunning new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Jungle is both modern and readable.

Mark Victor Hansen, best-selling author of Chicken Soup for the Soul says this about 17 Cents and a Dream: "Through pure determination, fortitude and attitude, Daniel pulled out of impossibly difficult situations. His story is true, his story is a personal inspiration to me and I hope it will inspire you too to maximize your potential and go for the greatest of dreams." On a cold December night in 1991, a young boy with 17 cents in his pocket first set foot in the United States. Twenty years later that young man found himself the founder and CEO of a billion-dollar corporation. Daniel Milstein's harrowing story about how his mother, father and brother escaped the oppressive government of the USSR and immigrated to the United States and carved out a life for themselves has been described as the quintessential immigrant story of the era. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Daniel and his family experienced undue hardship, religious persecution, and life-and-death situations all in the shadows of the greatest nuclear accident that ever occurred: the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, which killed more than 100,000 people, including his grandfather. Now, as an Inc 500 CEO, Daniel has just finished a new book detailing his story: 17 Cents and a Dream: My Incredible Journey from the U.S.S.R. to Living the American Dream. ungekürzt. Alexander Hamilton: Founding Father is the story of one of America's great founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. The book is a detailed account of this very important but controversial figure in American history. The story is a classic rags-to-riches one and begins with his childhood in the British West Indies. Though his life was filled with tragedy and he was very poor, Hamilton managed to distinguish himself through his writing and his business skills. Eventually he left the West Indies and immigrated to North America, where he received a first-rate education. Later he became a hero in the Revolutionary War and was appointed to be General George Washington's right-hand man. Because of his service to Washington, Hamilton became the secretary of the treasury when Washington was elected president. As a member of the new government, Hamilton made significant contributions, including setting up a banking system and a currency system that are still used today. He also played a major role in the ratification of the United States Constitution. While Alexander Hamilton: Founding Father primarily focuses on Hamilton's great contributions, it also presents his dark side. Though Hamilton married a wealthy woman and became a member of the aristocracy, he was also involved in a scandalous affair and ultimately died in a duel defending his honor. ungekürzt. When the Continental Congress decided to declare independence from the British Empire in 1776, 10 percent of the population of their fledgling country were from Ireland. By 1790, close to 500,000 Irish citizens had immigrated to America. They were very active in the American Revolution, both on the battlefields and off, yet their stories are not well known. The important contributions of the Irish on military, political, and economic levels have been long overlooked and ignored by generations of historians. However, new evidence has revealed that Washington's Continental Army consisted of a far larger percentage of Irish soldiers than previously thought - between 40 and 50 percent - who fought during some of the most important battles of the American Revolution. Romanticized versions of this historical period tend to focus on the upper-class figures who had the biggest roles in America's struggle for liberty. But these adaptations neglect the impact of European and Irish ideals as well as citizens on the formation of the revolution. Irish contributors such as John Barry, the colonies' foremost naval officer; Henry Knox, an artillery officer and future secretary of war; Richard Montgomery, America's first war hero and martyr; and Charles Thomson, a radical organizer and secretary to the Continental Congress were all instrumental in carrying out the vision for a free country. Without their timely and disproportionate assistance, America almost certainly would have lost the desperate fight for its existence. In 2008, I wondered what I was doing with my life, struggling to find a point in having founded a design firm in New York City and simultaneously feeling overwhelmingly stimulated by the rewards of my so-called success, a condition difficult for an immigrated French boy not to feel excited about. But I realized I was asking the wrong questions, instead of wondering what I was doing, I should have been pondering who I was, a much more interesting journey to undertake. And so I started writing, on the subjects that matter to me most, whether death or movies, love or travel, digging deep inside myself to try and unearth the layers of small truths that have accumulated in forty years of existence and hopefully get to know myself. The result was much more fruitful than I expected. That is because in addition to what I dug up, which would only be valuable to me, I discovered something much more useful: a process to question everything equally, which I have named The Considered Life. It is a tool for examining the choices we make from moment to moment and analyzing the causes and consequences of those decisions so that we may be certain they are ours and ours alone. This is self-consciousness, and empowerment lays within. This tool can be used by anyone, at any time for it is merely a way to think about your own life, a way which helped me define mine. Imagined as the opposite of dogma, The Considered Life simply encourages you to dig within your layers to explore who you really are. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stefan Boublil.
