Reboot Ranch , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 741min
Two years ago, Anna Loehmeyer’s marriage, job, and life fell apart when her husband was arrested for fraud. The experience devastated her, but Anna found a new purpose when she rescued a mare bound for slaughter. After acquiring two more hard-luck equines and a small farm in Western New Jersey, Anna decides to take the plunge into her own horse rescue operation. The only person eager to help is her teenage niece MJ, who is recovering from her own heartbreak - the untimely death of her beloved father. Formerly a good student, MJ has become depressed and rebellious, even jeopardizing her chances to get into college. She persuades her mother to let her spend the summer living and working at the rescue farm, because in her aunt Anna she sees “the only adult who’s doing anything meaningful".Soon, the two women recognize a bond that goes beyond family ties - their mutual love of horses and a desire to save them from abusive situations. Less experienced than Anna, MJ learns on the job, and her mistakes awaken Anna’s motherly instincts and amuse Walt, a young man from a neighboring farm who helps out when needed.Signs that an intruder has been lurking around her property give Anna even more to worry about. Her greatest challenge, though, could also be her best hope for an adoption success story - the farm’s newest resident, an ex-racehorse named Murphy. Almost put down for seriously injuring a jockey, the big gray loves to jump, even without a rider. But is he too dangerous for Anna and MJ to handle, much less to retrain? Can they afford the natural horsemanship expert the vet recommended? For the sake of their horses, both Anna and MJ may just have to learn when and how to ask for help. ungekürzt. Language: English. Spectacular Bid: The Last Superhorse of the Twentieth Century: Horses in History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 500min
On the morning of the 1979 Belmont Stakes, Spectacular Bid stepped on a safety pin in his stall, injuring his foot. He had impressively won the first two races - the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness - but finished third in the Belmont, most likely due to his injury, making him one win shy of becoming the sport's third straight Triple Crown champion. But that loss did not prevent him from becoming one of horse racing's greatest competitors. After taking two months to recover, the battleship gray colt would go on to win 26 of 30 races during his career, with two second-place finishes and one third. He was voted the 10th greatest Thoroughbred of the 20th century according to BloodHorse magazine, and A Century of Champions places him ninth in the world and third among North American horses - even ahead of the renowned Man o' War.This horse biography tells the story of the honest and not-so-glamorous colorful characters surrounding the champion - including Bud Delp, the brash and cocky trainer who was distrustful of the Kentucky establishment, and Ron Franklin, the 19-year-old jockey who buckled under the stress and pressure associated with fame. The book is published by The University Press of Kentucky. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks."Peter Lee has written a fast-paced and exciting look at the life and times of one of the modern era's most impactful horses." (Barry Irwin, owner of and former writer for the BloodHorse)"From beginning to end, it's a book that you cannot put down!" (Brian Zipse, managing partner of Derby Day Racing)"Peter Lee does a masterful job telling the back story of how "The Bid"…developed into what many still call "The perfect racehorse." Narcissism Epidemic: 24 Tips to Teach Good Manners to Any Narcissist: Transcend Mediocrity, Book 161 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 54min
Many people live with, work with, and interact with narcissists on a daily basis. They may be your coworker, your mother, your daughter, your sister-in-law, or your boss. Narcissists are self-centric, rude, and lacking in empathy for others. They have a tendency to lie, steal, cheat, and hurt other people. Sometimes this is intentional on the part of the narcissist, and other times it is due to his brain wiring and immature emotions. Narcissistic traits are often passed down from one generation to the next. Narcissism can pervade an entire family lineage. The truth of the matter is that just one narcissistic injury can lead a mother or father to injuring many generations of children and grandchildren that come after him or her. Neither generation heals before they bear more children, and thus the cycle of abuse continues from one generation to the next, often poisoning an entire family lineage over time. Narcissistic traits don't have to come from full-fledged narcissistic personality disorder. Narcissistic traits can be linked to many mental health disorders, psychological complexes and personality disorders. Society believes that an internal state of being is not conducive to living in a society, and thus inwardness is seen as unhealthy by most. Task-orientation and object-orientation is also seen as unhealthy on some levels, because empathy helps us to see why our skills and actions are necessary for the betterment of all people, not just for the betterment of ourselves. In this book, we will discuss the family unit in more depth as it pertains to narcissism. We will talk about the narcissistic mother, the narcissistic father, and the narcissistic children. We will discuss what happens when narcissists become grandparents. We will cover how the narcissist came to be and why the narcissistic injury is passed down from one generation to the next. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sorrel Brigman. Richard Jewell , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 670min
Soon to be a major film from Academy Award–winning director Clint Eastwood - starring Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde, and Paul Walter Hauser! This collection of captivating profiles from Vanity Fair writer Marie Brenner spans her award-winning career and features larger-than-life figures such as Donald Trump, Roy Cohn, Malala Yousafzai, and Richard Jewell - the security guard whose dramatic heroism at the bombing of the 1996 Olympics made him the FBI’s prime suspect.Previously published as A Private War, Marie Brenner’s Richard Jewell tells a gripping true story of heroism and injustice. In the early morning hours of July 27, 1996, three pipe bombs exploded at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, killing one person and injuring 111 others. Hundreds more potential casualties were prevented by the vigilance and quick actions of security guard Richard Jewell, who uncovered the bombs and began evacuating the area. But no good deed goes unpunished.Desperate for a lead, investigators and journalists pursued Jewell as a potential suspect in the case, painting him as an obvious match for the infamous “lone bomber” profile. Accused of being a terrorist and a failed law enforcement officer who craved public recognition for his false heroics, he saw his reputation smeared across headlines and broadcasts nationwide. After a months-long investigation found no evidence against him, the US Attorney finally cleared Jewell’s name. Yet Jewell would not be fully exonerated in the eyes of the public until the actual bomber confessed in 2005, just two years before Jewell’s premature death at the age of 44.In Richard Jewell, veteran journalist Marie Brenner brilliantly chronicles Jewell’s ordeal to share the story of an ordinary man whose life was shattered by a false narrative. This collection also includes Brenner’s classic encounters with Donald Trump, Roy Cohn, Malala Yousafzai, Marie Colvin, and ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Marie Brenner. From Broken Glass: My Story of Finding Hope in Hitler's Death Camps to Inspire a New Generation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 371min
From the survivor of 10 Nazi concentration camps who went on to create the New England Holocaust Memorial, an inspiring memoir about finding strength in the face of despair. On August 14, 2017, two days after a white-supremacist activist rammed his car into a group of anti-Fascist protestors, killing one and injuring 19, the New England Holocaust Memorial was vandalized for the second time in as many months. At the base of one of its fifty-four-foot glass towers lay a pile of shards. For Steve Ross, the image called to mind Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass in which German authorities and civilians ransacked Jewish-owned buildings with sledgehammers. Ross was eight years old when the Nazis invaded his Polish village, forcing his family to flee. He spent his next six years in a day-to-day struggle to survive the notorious camps in which he was imprisoned, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Dachau among them. When he was finally liberated, he no longer knew how old he was, he was literally starving to death, and everyone in his family save for his brother had been killed. Ross learned in his darkest experiences - by observing and enduring inconceivable cruelty as well as by receiving compassion from caring fellow prisoners - the human capacity to rise above even the bleakest circumstances. He decided to devote himself to underprivileged youth, aiming to ensure that despite the obstacles in their lives they would never experience suffering like he had. Over the course of a nearly 40-year career as a psychologist working in the Boston city schools, that was exactly what he did. At the end of his career, he spearheaded the creation of the New England Holocaust Memorial, a site millions of people, including young students, visit every year. Equal parts heartrending, brutal, and inspiring, From Broken Glass is the story of how one man survived the unimaginable and inspired a new generation to help forge a more compassionate wor ungekürzt. The Palmer Raids: The History of the Arrests and Deportations of Anarchists and Communists in America during the First Red Scare , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 110min
The war power is of necessity an inherent power in every sovereign nation. It is the power of self-reservation and that power has no limits other than the extent of the emergency." (Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, December 1918)While the period from 1945-1955 was the longest and most extensive period of time in American history when a fear of communism gripped the country, it was not the first. World War I was the first major foreign conflict the U.S. was involved in, after being safe behind the Atlantic Ocean, and Americans were now afraid of espionage and sabotage. As a result, people of German descent came under suspicion, and this subjected innocent German-Americans to mob violence, much of it perpetrated by a vigilante group called the American Protective League (APL), which had a quarter of a million members dedicated to rooting out German spies. When they did not find enough, they turned their sights on homegrown subversives, namely the International Workers of the World, the “Wobblies”.With the end of the war, concern over German subversives was replaced with concerns over communist subversives. By 1919, the Bolshevik Revolution had spread throughout Central Europe and seemed to threaten the rest of the world. In America, newspaper stories openly worried about a similar revolution in the country. A rash of strikes fed fears that class warfare, fomented by foreign communist forces, would break out at any moment. In this powder keg, all that was needed was a spark to create full-blown hysteria, and the spark came on June 2, 1919, when the home of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer was bombed, injuring Palmer and killing the bomber. The anarchist leaflets he was carrying were scattered in the bomb debris, and this attack on his home prompted Palmer, who had been a reformist Quaker, to launch an all-out war against left-wing radicals. In the process, the Attorney General, who had already been impressed with a self-confident and ene ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. The Stonewall Riots: The History and Legacy of the Protests That Helped Spark the Modern Gay Rights Movement , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 73min
In 1969, America was still undergoing plenty of social turmoil, much of it the result of sweeping changes made via the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, which helped spark the counterculture. Protests were prominent across the country, and one of the movements galvanized during this time was on behalf of the LGBT community, who were often subjected to discrimination in all facets of life. However, LGBT rights were naturally on the back burner for most Americans at the time, and it's safe to say few considered them until hearing about the Stonewall riots that took place at the end of June 1969 in New York City. Given the discrimination, gay people tried to meet in secret gay bars, and it was common for police to try to bust up such gatherings, but on the night of June 28, the patrons at the Stonewall Inn had enough. As the police tried to line everybody in the bar up and identify them, the crowd hanging around the place began to swell, and tensions began to rise as there were increasing calls to challenge the propriety of the police action. As people sang "We Shall Overcome" and there were chants of "Gay Power," a scuffle eventually broke out, and the police resorted to anti-riot tactics to break up the crowd, injuring an untold number with bats and other objects. The next day, there were further riots, and in the coming days, as news of what happened spread, a gay rights movement began to sprout, consisting of more peaceful protest and pickets. Eventually, the Stonewall riots became a rallying cry across the country for gay rights, and gay rights groups popped up in every state. There would be gay pride marches on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots to commemorate the event, and gay rights entered the mainstream and truly became part of the national debate. As historian Lillian Faderman put it, "The Stonewall Rebellion was crucial because it sounded the rally for that movement. It became an emblem of gay and lesbian power. By cal ungekürzt.
