Among all the peoples of the ancient Near East, few are more misunderstood than the Scythians. The Scythians swept into Anatolia in the early first millennium BCE and left a large swath of destruction in their wake. They challenged old, strong, and venerable kingdoms such as the Assyrians, Egyptians, and Medes, until they were defeated by the Medes and then gradually disappeared into historical obscurity once more. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, the Scythians ruled a large part of the Near East for nearly 30 years, but before they disappeared from the historical record, the Scythians greatly impacted the history of the Near East. The Scythians have been known to the world for centuries thanks to the writings of Herodotus and other Classical historians, but still much remains unknown about the enigmatic people, and the first attempts to understand the mostly non-literate warrior culture through archaeology were conducted by Soviet scholars during the 20th century. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Soviet research on the Scythians has become more widely available in the West and Russia, and other central Asian republics have been more receptive to allowing foreign scholars to conduct field work in their countries. This has resulted in a much greater understanding of the Scythians and their place in ancient history. Through an analysis of modern scholarly works and archaeological reports, as well as careful examination of literate peoples who wrote about the Scythians, the importance of these people can be placed more firmly in its proper historical context. ungekürzt. The Parthians in whose hands the empire of the east now is, having divided the world, as it were, with the Romans, were originally exiles from Scythia. This is apparent from their very name; for in the Scythian language exiles are called Parthi. During the time of the Assyrians and Medes, they were the most obscure of all the people of the east. Subsequently, too, when the empire of the east was transferred from the Medes to the Persians, they were but as a herd without a name, and fell under the power of the stronger. At last they became subject to the Macedonians, when they conquered the east; so that it must seem wonderful to everyone, that they should have reached such a height of good fortune as to rule over those nations under whose sway they had been merely slaves. Being assailed by the Romans, also, in three wars, under the conduct of the greatest generals, and at the most flourishing period of the republic, they alone, of all nations, were not only a match for them, but came off victorious; though it may have been a greater glory to them, indeed, to have been able to rise amidst the Assyrian, Median, and Persian empires, so celebrated of o]d, and the most powerful dominion of Bactria, peopled with a thousand cities, than to have been victorious in war against a people that came from a distance; especially when they were continually harassed by severe wars with the Scythians and other neighboring nations, and pressed with various other formidable contests. - An ancient Roman account of the Parthians. The Parthian people created an empire that lasted almost 500 years, from the mid-3rd century BCE until 224 CE, and it stretched from the Euphrates River in the west to Central Asia and the borders of Bactria in the east (Brosius 2010, 83). ungekürzt. Jonah knew that if he delivered God’s message to the Ninevites they would repent and God would save them; but he also knew that even if the Ninevites repented, they would backslide into their old ways. And that’s exactly what happens. The prophet Nahum makes clear what will happen to the capital of the Assyrian empire if they turn away from God. And indeed his prophecies come to pass: Nineveh is totally destroyed in 612 B.C. by a coalition of Babylonians and Medes, being buried under 40 feet of sand in the Iraqi desert until Sir Austen Henry Laylard discovers it’s remains in 1847. Join Logo’s Bible Study’s Dr. Bill Creasy as he examines Nahum’s prophetic message to Nineveh. Language: English. Narrator: Dr. Bill Creasy. Drusilla Dunjee Houston (1876-1941) was a teacher, journalist, and self-taught historian. Inspired by the works of WEB DuBois, Houston undertook a quest to discover African history from an African American perspective. In Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Cushite Empire, Houston identifies the Kushite civilization of Sudan, with its capital city Meroe, to be the cradle of humanity. She examines ancient Egypt to the north, the land and people of Ethiopia to the south, and on to Arabia, to find elements of Kushite culture. From there, she turns her gaze to Mesopotamia, to the land of Chaldea and to Babylonia, the land of marvels, and beyond to the Medes and Persians. Finally, Houston investigates the civilization of India, Hindu religion, and literature to round off her interesting thesis. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rodney Louis Tompkins. On board the moletrain Medes, Sham Yes ap Soorap watches in awe as he witnesses his first moldywarpe hunt. The giant mole bursting from the earth, the harpoonists targeting their prey, the battle resulting in one’s death and the other’s glory are extraordinary. But no matter how spectacular it is, travelling the endless rails of the railsea, Sham can't shake the sense that there is more to life. Even if his philosophy-seeking captain can think only of the hunt for the ivory-coloured mole she’s been chasing – ever since it took her arm all those years ago. When they come across a wrecked train, at first it's a welcome distraction. But the impossible salvage Sham finds in the derelict leads to considerably more than he'd bargained for. Soon he's hunted on all sides: by pirates, trainsfolk, monsters, and salvage - scrabblers. And it might not be just Sham's life that's about to change. It could be the whole of the railsea. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Lawrence. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/macm/000620/bk_macm_000620_sample.mp3.
