Chronicling the journey of 90-year-old Sam Massell, each chapter is a book unto itself on the separate parts of his life. He has excelled in four careers, including 20 years in commercial real estate, 22 years in elected offices, 13 years in the tourism industry, and is now in his 30th year of association management. In 1969, Sam Massell was elected the first Jewish mayor of Atlanta, Georgia. Since leaving office, he has been inducted into numerous "Halls of Fame" for service in fields of business, government, civil rights, hospitality, and influence. While a young boy and self-described "dead-end kid", Massell searched for identity between the mischief of his only two friends (one who ended up in juvenile detention) and operating his own oversized Coca-Cola stand. Later, he pioneered professionally as a specialist in building medical offices, struggled between pride and prejudice for being Jewish and as a liberal Democrat organized and managed a nonprofit civic group among 100 (mostly) conservative Republican business leaders. Politically, Massell changed Atlanta's city elections to nonpartisan, created Atlanta's Urban Design Commission, allowed Muhammad Ali to fight when 50 other cities would not, established Metro Atlanta's mass transit system (MARTA), appointed the first woman to the city council, named the first Blacks to city department head status, and developed the Omni, Atlanta's first enclosed arena. Most importantly, his legacy will be his peaceful guidance of Atlanta (then population 500,000) through its transformation from an all-White power structure to a Black city government. This is a textbook case of behind-the-scenes fact and frivolity of the sins of a workaholic and the success of an idea man, a leader, and the subject of a well-written history. ungekürzt. Professor Allan J. Lichtman, who has correctly forecasted 30 years of presidential elections, makes the case for impeaching the 45th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump. Impeachment will 'proceed from the misconduct of public men, or, in other words, from the abuse or violation of some public trust," and "they relate chiefly to injuries done immediately to the society itself.' (Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist, 1788) In the fall of 2016, Distinguished Professor of History at American University Allan Lichtman made headlines when he predicted that Donald J. Trump would defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton to win the presidential election. Now, in clear, nonpartisan terms, Lichtman lays out the reasons Congress could remove Trump from the Oval Office: his ties to Russia before and after the election, the complicated financial conflicts of interest at home and abroad, and his abuse of executive authority. The Case for Impeachment also offers a fascinating look at presidential impeachments throughout American history, including the often-overlooked story of Andrew Johnson's impeachment, details about Richard Nixon's resignation, and Bill Clinton's hearings. Lichtman shows how Trump exhibits many of the flaws (and more) that have doomed past presidents. As the Nixon administration dismissed the reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as 'character assassination' and 'a vicious abuse of the journalistic process', Trump has attacked the 'dishonest media', claiming 'the press should be ashamed of themselves'. Historians, legal scholars, and politicians alike agree: we are in politically uncharted waters. The durability of institutions is being undermined, and the public's confidence in them is eroding, threatening American democracy itself. The world wants to know where the United States is headed. Lichtman argues, with clarity and power, that for Donald Trump's presidency, smoke has become fi ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Woren. In the fall of 2008, 15 of the world's leading economists - representing the broadest spectrum of economic opinion - gathered at New Hampshire's Squam Lake. Their goal: the mapping of a long-term plan for financial regulation reform. The Squam Lake Report distills the wealth of insights from the ongoing collaboration that began at these meetings and provides a revelatory, unified, and coherent voice for fixing our troubled and damaged financial markets. As an alternative to the patchwork solutions and ideologically charged proposals that have dominated other discussions, the Squam Lake group sets forth a clear nonpartisan plan of action to transform the regulation of financial markets - not just for the current climate - but for generations to come. They look at the critical holes in the existing regulatory framework for handling complex financial institutions, retirement savings, and credit-default swaps. They offer ideas for new financial instruments designed to recapitalize banks without burdening taxpayers. To lower the risk that large banks will fail, the authors call for higher capital requirements as well as a systemic regulator who is part of the central bank. They collectively analyze where the financial system has failed, and how these weak points should be overhauled.Combining an immense depth of academic, private sector, and public policy experience, The Squam Lake Report contains urgent recommendations that will positively influence everyone's financial well-being - all who care about the world's economic health need to pay attention.Contributors include Kenneth R. From the best-selling author of A Vast Conspiracy and The Run of His Life comes Too Close to Call - the definitive story of the Bush-Gore presidential recount. A political and legal analyst of unparalleled journalistic skill, Jeffrey Toobin is the ideal writer to distill the events of the 36 anxiety-filled days that culminated in one of the most stunning Supreme Court decisions in history. Packed with news-making disclosures and written with the drive of a legal thriller, Too Close to Call takes us inside James Baker's private jet, through the locked gates to Al Gore's mansion, behind the covered-up windows of Katherine Harris's office, and even into the secret conference room of the United States Supreme Court. As the scene shifts from Washington to Austin and into the remote corners of the enduringly strange Sunshine State, Toobin's book will transform what you thought you knew about the most extraordinary political drama in American history. The Florida recount unfolded in a kaleidoscopic maze of bizarre concepts (chads, pregnant and otherwise), unfamiliar people in critically important positions (the Florida Supreme Court), and familiar people in surprising new places (the Miami relatives of Elián González, in a previously undisclosed role in this melodrama). With the rich characterization that is his trademark, Toobin portrays the prominent strategists who masterminded the campaigns - the Daleys and the Roves - and also the lesser-known but influential players who pulled the strings, as well as the judges and justices whose decisions determined the final outcome. Toobin gives both camps a treatment they have not yet received - remarkably evenhanded, nonpartisan, and entirely new. The post-election period posed a challenge to even the most zealous news junkie: how to keep up with what was happening and sort out the important from the trivial. Jeffrey Toobin has now done this - and then some. With clarity, in ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Eric Jason Martin. The legendary leadership guide, distilled from a lifetime of wisdom and experience in government and business... Throughout his long and distinguished career - as a naval aviator, a U.S. Congressman, a top aide to four American presidents, a high-level diplomat, a CEO of two Fortune 500 companies, and the only twice-serving Secretary of Defense in American history - Donald Rumsfeld has collected hundreds of pithy, compelling, and often humorous observations about leadership, business, and life. When President Gerald Ford ordered these aphorisms distributed to his White House staff in 1974, the collection became known as "Rumsfeld's Rules". First gathered as three-by-five cards in a shoebox and then typed up and circulated informally over the years, these eminently nonpartisan rules have amused and enlightened presidents, business executives, chiefs of staff, foreign officials, diplomats, and members of Congress. They earned praise from the Wall Street Journal as "Required reading", and from the New York Times which said: "Rumsfeld's Rules can be profitably read in any organization.... The best reading, though, are his sprightly tips on inoculating oneself against that dread White House disease, the inflated ego." Meanwhile, the collection continued to grow as Rumsfeld added new rules derived from things he read, heard, or observed in more than eight decades of a remarkable life. Now, these legendary rules are made available for the first time to corporate executives. Rumsfeld has selected his most useful and important rules for effective leadership, enhanced with fresh insights and entertaining anecdotes, and discusses them in the blunt and witty style that made his Pentagon press conferences "must-see TV". Distilled from a career of unusual breadth and accomplishment, and organized under practical topics like hiring people, running a meeting, and dealing with the press, Rumsfeld's Rules can benefit people at ungekürzt. In this short audiobook, R.W. Murphy makes the argument that the US healthcare delivery system is irreparably broken as the result of a perfectly inelastic demand curve for healthcare goods and services. In essence, he indicates that Americans will buy the same number of units regardless of price and that is destroying the system. He points to all the retail level cost control initiatives to date as failing to address wholesale pricing pressures. His premise is that underlying wholesale cost increases have hardly been affected at all. Any cost reductions at the retail level resulting from tough utilization management have been no more than temporary "stair step" efforts that get quickly absorbed. He offers both historical perspective and going-forward options for structural change. He refers to the need to make the demand curve more price responsive as an "American Healthcare Imperative" because the inevitable alternative is serious damage to American society in its absence. He indicates that failing to act is no longer an option.R.W. Murphy has been involved in healthcare cost control since 1980. He started his career as a home office underwriter for a major US healthcare insurance company. In 1990 he became a consultant for an international firm and in 1995 formed his owned consulting company. He has been involved in virtually every cost control initiative in the last 40 years - and by his own admission, has the scars to prove it. The book has been made deliberately short. It can be listened to in less than an hour. The author indicates that his intent has been to make Americans think about the necessity for structural change - not give them an actual road map for it. As such, he remains relatively nonpartisan regarding the options. He also is clear that he has spent less time in doing statistical research than using his professional experience to show relationships. He tells the listener to not be caught up in absolute numbers but to instead ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John E. Christ.
