William Lloyd Garrison: The Life and Legacy of 19th Century America’s Most Prominent Abolitionist , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 103min
Nearly a century after the first unified resistance against the British, strife over slavery widened to the point of civil war, and the condition of slaves in America was in several aspects worse than at any time during the 18th century. As the nation tried to sort out its most intractable political issue, politicians and advocates on each side of the divide became increasingly more passionate, and vocal. The dam would burst completely after Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860, and the refusal of Northern states to strictly apply the new fugitive slave law would be explicitly cited in several of the Southern states’ articles of secession in late 1860 and early 1861. By April 1861, the Civil War had broken out.Well before Lincoln and the “Black Republicans” were cited by secessionist firebrands looking to justify their stances, one of the men they most bitterly opposed was abolitionist editor William Lloyd Garrison. While many begin their adult lives with very strident views and then mellow over time, he did just the opposite. Raised by a pious single mother, he embraced the general teachings of the Christian faith as a young man, and in his 20s, he became convicted that slavery was the greatest moral evil in the nation. Thereafter, he devoted most of his life to seeing it ended, and he refused to give an inch in the name of compromise on the things he felt strongly about. As he famously put it, “With reasonable men, I will reason; with humane men I will plead; but to tyrants I will give no quarter, nor waste arguments where they will certainly be lost.” At the same time, while he held unshakable convictions and never wavered in giving voice to them, he was just as comfortable around people who did not share his religious background, so long as they stood with him against America’s “peculiar institution”. This put him in the company of many like-minded people, some of whom he helped organize and publicize through various organizations and publications ungekürzt. Language: English. Abolition. Feminism. Now.
In this landmark work, four of the world's leading scholar-activists issue an urgent call for a truly intersectional, internationalist, abolitionist feminism. As a politics and as a practice, abolitionism has increasingly shaped our political moment, amplified through the worldwide protests following the 2020 murder of George Floyd by a uniformed police officer. It is at the heart of the Black Lives Matter movement, in its demands for police defunding and demilitarisation, and a halt to prison construction. And it is there in the outrage which greeted the brutal treatment of women by police at the 2021 Clapham Common vigil for Sarah Everard. As this book shows, abolitionism and feminism stand shoulder-to-shoulder in fighting a common cause: the end of the carceral state, with its key role in perpetuating violence, both public and private, in prisons, in police forces, and in people's homes. Abolitionist theories and practices are at their most compelling when they are feminist; and a feminism that is also abolitionist is the most inclusive and persuasive version of feminism for these times. Abolition. Feminism. Now! 'This extraordinary book makes the most compelling case I've ever seen for the indivisibility of feminism and abolition' Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination 'Attentive to histories of organising that are too quickly erased, and alive to new possibilities for working collectively in the present time, this book is as capacious and demanding as the abolitionist feminism it calls for' Sara Ahmed, author of Willful Subjects- Shop: buecher

Harriet Tubman: A Captivating Guide to an American Abolitionist Who Became the Most Famous Conductor of the Underground Railroad , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 180min
If you want to discover the captivating life of Harriet Tubman, then pay attention...Harriet Tubman was known as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. But this wasn’t a railroad that carried trains and freight but rather human lives that were desperately seeking freedom. It was a clandestine group of individuals (hence the name “underground”) scattered across the United States and Canada who helped facilitate the migration of those ensnared in the South’s scourge of slavery to the so-called free states and provinces of the North.Harriet’s years of bondage were dreadful, and she had the scars to prove it. She also had recurring headaches from when a heavy two-pound weight used for weighing produce struck her in the head. Neither her scars nor her headaches would ever leave her, and they served as a constant reminder of what she had gone through. In fact, some biographies assert that as she got older, the headaches only grew worse. But Harriet was a fighter. And she insisted on those around her having that same fighting spirit, as well. Her steely determination was forged on the Underground Railroad, where to turn back meant slavery, severe punishment, and possibly death. Harriet Tubman traveled up and down the backroads in the dead of night, with only her own wits and her faith in God to help her.In Harriet Tubman: A Captivating Guide to an American Abolitionist Who Became the Most Famous Conductor of the Underground Railroad, you will discover chapters, such as:Never AgainHarriet’s Vision Begins to Take ShapeHarriet Makes a Break for FreedomFirst Forays on the Underground RailroadGeneral Tubman Takes ChargeHarriet on the Front LinesWith the Help of Her Family and FriendsPreparing a Place for Harriet TubmanAnd much, much more!Get this audiobook now to learn more about the life of Harriet Tubman! ungekürzt.
