La Gioconda
Arthaus presents a new production of La Gioconda recorded at the renowned opera house in Barcelona. The staging was realized in cooperation with the Arena di Verona and successfully shown in the famous opera festival’s 2005 programme. The Barcelona production features internationally acclaimed singers as well as celebrated soloists and ballet dancers from the Gran Teatre del Liceu – all showing a musically and dramatically impressive performance of this melodrama. The title role is sung by American soprano Deborah Voigt, one of the most important dramatic sopranos in her generation. Critics have praised her „lyricism, beauty of tone and dramatic acuity“ and her „impressive aura and voice.“ Polish contralto Ewa Podle appears as her blind mother, delighting the audience with the overwhelming warmth and broad range of her voice while convincingly conveying her character’s suffering. The Canadian tenor Richard Margison takes the role of the exiled nobleman Enzo and the Italian baritone Carlo Guelfi sings the spy and agent provocateur Barnaba. Both excel opposite the two female characters. The ballet – set to the famous “Dance of the Hours” – deservedly received extended ovations. The choreography – danced by two star dancers of the Barcelona ballet – tells a love story in view of ongoing time, symbolised by the twelve hours. La Gioconda is a typical Romantic opera refl ecting various strands of 19th-century European melodrama. Even though it rests on the foundations of French grand opera, most obviously in its third-act ballet, the work follows the Italian and especially the Verdian tradition with its inspired arias, wonderful choruses and impressive orchestration. At the same time the vocal writing and a number of its dramatic effects point the way forward to verismo. The sets and costumes of the present production are the work of the distinguished Italian architect and director Pier Luigi Pizzi, whose staging is classical in its nobility.- Shop: odax

Ronald Corp (Dir) - Claire Rutter (Sopran) - Catherine Denley (Contralto) - Mark Wilde (Tenor) - Garry Magee (Bariton) - u.a. // While some may consider Sullivan "without the WSG" on a level with a Chinese takeaway "without the MSG", Hyperion's pioneering recordings continue to go some way to prove the worth of his 'solo' compositions. Ronald Corp and his New London Orchestra have also recorded Sullivan's epic secular cantata The Golden Legend to critical acclaim.- Shop: odax

Arethusa Consortium
Elena Buttiero, celtic harp, spinet Ferdinando Molteni, mandocello, guitar Stefano Tomasini, celtic harp This album was born from the desire to have a permanent record of two shows that Arethusa Consortium is producing. The first show is a recital entitled O'Carolan Stories and is devoted entirely to Turlough O'Carolan, the most important Irish composer. The second part is a journey in European music-beginning with music of Davide Rizzio from the sixteenth century and progressing to music of contemporary composers such as Andrès and Tiersen. For this album we chose a selection of music that, despite coming from different projects, have their own tonal, melodic, or rhythmic consistency. It is, ultimately, an exploration of European instrumental music linking, in equal measure, scholarly and popular traditions. The earliest composer in this recording is David Rizzio. Born in Pancalieri, near Turin (Italy), around 1533, he lived the last years of his life at the court of Mary, Queen of Scots, In Edinburgh. He was killed by conspirators, motivated by jealousy, in 1566. He composed some of the most beautiful melodies of Scotland. We have chosen two, and have combined the versions from Orpheus Caledonius, published in 1725 by William Thomson and from A Collection of Scots Tunes by William McGibbon (1746). From Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), the most popular Irish composer, we have selected some melodies from Edward Bunting's General Collection of Ancient Irish Music, published in Dublin in 1796. Contemporary instrumental music is represented by two French composers whom we love. The are Bernard Andrès (1940), author of brilliant compositions for harp, and Yann Tiersen (1970), eclectic writer of music often performed using toy instruments. They are joined by Ferdinando Molteni (1962) with a composition written for a traditional Italian instrument, the mandocello. Elena Buttiero plays a Aziliz Camac harp and a Claudio Tuzzi spinet, 2005. Ferdinando Molteni plays a German mandocello (early XX century), a Sicilian contralto mandola (late XIX century), a Larrivée L03 guitar, a Spanish classical guitar and toy percussion instruments. Stefano Tomasini plays a Melusine Camac harp. Info: allegroconmoto. Savona@virgilio. It.- Shop: odax

Arias
LEGACY COLLECTIONS is proud to present the re-release of ARIAS, a collection of opera arias performed by Aldona Stempužis, Mezzosoprano, originally recorded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1969 with the Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Darius Lapinskas. Aldona Stempužis is the recognized 20th century premiere vocal artist of the Lithuanian Community worldwide. She is a singer with rare versatility who brings her keen sense of style, expression and drama to each song, combined with a stunningly rich vocal timbre. Her voice, which often modulates between a mezzo and contralto range brings a unique warmth and richness to her performances. She performs opera, archaic Lithuanian folk music, standard art songs, and contemporary music with equal mastery. Success came quickly during the '50s after settling in Cleveland, Ohio after WWII and winning several vocal competitions against professional and conservatory trained artists on career tracks. Aldona Stempužis' descision not to pursue a full professional career in lieu of raising a family in Cleveland, Ohio did not diminish her love for singing and passion for the vocal arts. She continued to develop her craft by continuing to rehearse and perform in numerous recitals and concerts with symphony orchestras in North and South America, competitions, and operas with the Cafarelli Opera Company and the Chicago Lithuanian Opera Company. ARIAS is a masterful culmination of opera Arias she has performed throughout her operatic career. Our only regret that more were not recorded.- Shop: odax
