When I visited the huge Damien Hirst exhibition staged by the Gagosian Gallery in New York in 1996, one of the most striking pieces was a large glass tank full of live fish. Dumped among the fish were an obstetrical couch, in a rather decayed condition, and various obstetrical implements. For some time after I had seen the show, this image tugged at my mind. It reminded me of something - but of what? Finally, memory dragged up the reference I needed: Hirst's piece was a direct descendant of Salvador Dali's installation, "Rainy Taxi", shown at the International Surrealist Exhibition in Paris in 1938."Rainy Taxi" was a broken down old car, in which Dali placed two mannequins. One was the driver, who had the head of a fish. In the back seat there was a blonde woman in an evening dress, seated among lettuces and endives, under a pipe system that supplied a constant fine spray of water. Thriving among the vegetables were two hundred live snails. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jack Wynters. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/105188/bk_acx0_105188_sample.mp3. There is a storm coming, and her name is Amanda! Death came for Amanda Reynolds, but could not pry her from her home. For two decades, the abandoned mansion decayed, but not Amanda's room. When Katie Jarvis and her teammates enter it, they think they have found a paradise on earth. Under the guidance of world-renowned physicist, Bertrand Myers, the team researches the room's perfect environment, only to learn that it defies any natural explanation. When Katie discovers strange anomalies in the weather for miles around, the team delves into the house's history, only to have each of them targeted for disaster. Katie is convinced that Amanda's spirit still inhabits the room and is manipulating the weather in a desperate attempt to communicate. But Katie can't decipher what Amanda is trying to say or why. Bert remains skeptical and cautions that if Amanda possessed that kind of power, no one on earth would be safe. When a monstrous late-season hurricane traps Bert and thousands of others on Cape Cod, Katie realizes that only she can stop Amanda before it's too late. What she does not realize, is that something is still out to stop her. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Russell Jonas. Please note: This is a new adult romance novel involving two siblings who struggle with their emotions. This is not a work of erotica. The heart cares not what society forbids. Lily nurtures a secret love for a flawless man - the one who is her soul mate. Donovan is gorgeous, charismatic, and delights in all of Lily's talents and quirks. Their innate knowledge of each other is almost telepathic. Together they interlock like fine threads creating luxurious silk. But society dictates this picture-perfect adoration is the ghastliest of all possibilities. As Lily embarks on a quest for the romance the heavens intended, her suitor turns reluctant. Desperate to uncover why Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hiding decayed from a tender-hearted gentleman into a ferociously self-serving, cocky bastard, Lily is prepared for battle when it comes to the salvation of her soul mate. However, Donovan traps Lily in a mental game of chess, leaving her to question his sanity. When Lily's revelations about Donovan's destructive alter ego lead to an inconceivable truth, can she help Donovan survive fate's cruel joke? Impassioned, witty, and deeply moving, Love's Forbidden Flower is filled with stunning controversies that will forever haunt your heart. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Diane Rinella. A leading science writer examines how the brain's capacity reaches its peak in middle age. For many years, scientists thought that the human brain simply decayed over time and its dying cells led to memory slips, fuzzy logic, negative thinking, and even depression. But new research from neuroscientists and psychologists suggests that, in fact, the brain reorganizes, improves in important functions, and even helps us adopt a more optimistic outlook in middle age. Growth of white matter and brain connectors allow us to recognize patterns faster, make better judgments, and find unique solutions to problems. Scientists call these traits cognitive expertise and they reach their highest levels in middle age.In her impeccably researched book, science writer Barbara Strauch explores the latest findings that demonstrate, through the use of technology such as brain scans, that the middle-aged brain is more flexible and more capable than previously thought. For the first time, long-term studies show that our view of middle age has been misleading and incomplete. By detailing exactly the normal, healthy brain functions over time, Strauch also explains how its optimal processes can be maintained. Part scientific survey, part how-to guide, The Secret Life of the Grown-Up Brain is a fascinating glimpse at our surprisingly talented middle-aged minds. ungekürzt. Language: English. Escape into this odyssey and you will find yourself reckoning with the actual account of the Apostle Paul's historic shipwreck recorded in the Bible. In September of 2000, Bob Cornuke flew to Malta. That trip marked the start of nearly two years of research and discovery in search of the lost anchors described in Acts. The true story of The Lost Shipwreck of Paul reads like a gripping fiction novel, as Cornuke takes readers along with him into the investigation. Using techniques he learned as a police officer and crime scene investigator, he probes each angle of the mystery. Was St. Paul's Bay really the site of Paul's shipwreck? What route did Paul's boat take, and where would that leave them when they dropped the anchors?  What type of boat was used, and what type of anchors would it have had?  Would the anchors have decayed over time?  What exactly happened on the night of the shipwreck? Cornuke takes you into his life experience to find the answer in The Lost Shipwreck of Paul. Suspense and drama unfold in this riveting, true account that presents one of the most astounding discoveries of the century. It is history found and history made. ungekürzt. Language: English. Poe's classic tale lives on in this Gothic novel of ancestral madness in the mountains of modern-day North Carolina, from a New York Times best-selling author. Ever since Edgar Allan Poe looted a family's ignoble secret history for his classic story "The Fall of the House of Usher", living in the shadow of that sick dynasty has been an inescapable scourge for generations of Usher descendants. But not for horror novelist Rix Usher. Years ago he fled the isolated family estate of Usherland in the menacing North Carolina hills to pursue his writing career. He promised never to return. But his father's impending death has brought Rix back home to assume the role of Usher patriarch - and face his worst fears. His arrival forces him to confront a devious and impassive family and his vulnerable sister's slow descent into insanity. Stirring memories of the grim folktales born out of the surrounding Briartop Mountains and the terrifying legends of missing children, Rix knows that in the dark, twisted corridors of Usherland, that dreadful something he saw as a young boy is still there. It's waiting for him, as decayed and undying as the Usher heritage and more depraved than anything Poe could have imagined. This eerie novel by the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Swan Song and Boy's Life is "a frightening pleasure" and a worthy tribute to the master who inspired it (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). ungekürzt. The New York Times and internationally best-selling Danish crime writer Jussi Adler-Olsen returns with the third thriller in his exhilarating Department Q series. Detective Carl Mørck has received a bottle that holds an old and decayed message written in blood. It's a cry for help from two young brothers, tied and bound in a boathouse by the sea. After floating in the ocean for years before turning up, the bottle sat forgotten, unopened, on a police department windowsill, before the seal was cracked and the gruesome message, written in Danish, was analyzed. Could it be real? Who are these boys, and why weren't they reported missing? Could they possibly still be alive? Carl's investigation will force him to cross paths with a woman stuck in a desperate marriage: Her husband refuses to tell her where he goes, how long he will be away, what he does while he's gone - or even what he does for a living. Isolated after choosing him over family and friends, she waits for days on end, and when he returns she must endure his wants, his moods, his threats. But enough is enough. She will find out the truth, no matter the cost to him - or to herself. In this heart-pounding thriller, Carl and his colleagues Assad and Rose must use every resource available to uncover the horrifying truth set adrift in that bottle all those years ago. ungekürzt. The world over, the job demands for managers and executives are expanding greatly in a world where yesterday’s competitive advantage is now easily disrupted in a technologically driven world. Individuals and organizations have to cope with a social media era where information is required at the speed of thought. Maintaining a mental balance in this fast-changing world requires an ability to act from a position of mental strength as much as possible. Incidents of diminished state of mind, feelings, moods, ability to relate to others and daily functioning are increasingly common in today’s world. In a few cases, executive burnouts have been linked to suicides. This book takes a dive at the root cause of individual and organizational burnouts and how to deal with mental perceptions that easily lead people to a distorted view of reality even in the most extreme of circumstances. This book speaks to the innate resilient capacity of every person irrespective of where they might be in the journey of life - to the student preparing for O ‘Levels as well as the fortune 500 executive. In a series of simple easy-to-understand chapters, the book provides a source of mental vitamin that reverses age-long decayed thinking patterns. A profound benefit of the understanding espoused in this book is the ease of application of its message - just a simple understanding of how life works: and resilience, motivation, drive, peak performance state of mind and bouncebackability begins to take hold of its listeners.  ungekürzt.
