Desert Soliloquy: A Perfectly Sane Misanthrope Hides in the Desert , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 561min
Desert Soliloquy; A Perfectly Sane Misanthrope Hides in the Desert is like combining Walden with Blazing Saddles with a bit of history about the East Mojave Desert. How I interacted with the desert and the people I encountered while living in "my" cave is the theme that binds the manuscript together. I performed several decades of original research on the region and the historical people who passed through the East Mojave, and I have included the most interesting historical events (such as the "last great gun fight" in the USA Southwest) in an easy, humorous narrative. The best-selling author Douglas Preston wrote about my manuscript, "I have read Desertphile by David Rice, and I couldn't put it down. It is a cynical, fabulous, outrageous, politically incorrect, foul-mouthed, and absolutely hilarious modern-day Walden. I believe it has excellent potential for a successful commercial publication and would recommend it to an agent on that basis." My "voice" as a writer is entertaining, uncommon in the current nonfiction market, and informative; I treat my fans as adults and assume they are above average in intelligence. At times my humor is cerebral, and at other times it's that of a troglodyte: I have found that this engages fans and leaves them with the sense that they are on an exhilarating ride as they enjoy the story. ungekürzt. Edmund Kemper: The True Story of The Brutal Co-ed Butcher , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 48min
Edmund Emil Kemper III achieved notoriety as a serial killer when he took the lives of 10 people between August 27, 1964, and April 21, 1973. His victims included his adoptive grandparents, six co-eds from the University of Santa Cruz, his mother, and his mother's friend. This book explored the life of Kemper from his abusive childhood to his sentencing in November 1973. The horror of Kemper's actions go beyond the killing of his victims; it was what he did with his victims' bodies after killing them. Necrophilia, cannibalism, and dismemberment were all part his routine in his attempts to satiate his morbid desires. Just as terrifying as his dark fantasies were his ability to appear and function as an average person, allowing him to avoid raising suspicion in those he interacted with, including law enforcement. Contrary to the myth that serial killers kill indiscriminately, Kemper's killing spree may have been rooted in the hatred that he felt for his mother. In an interview after his capture, he admitted that he was intentionally developing his killing skills with each co-ed that he killed. He was training for the ultimate murder, which was the killing of his mother. From beginning to end, the book provides insights to why Kemper became a serial killer as well his mindset behind the killings. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jason Fella. Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca: American Trailblazer , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 763min
In November 1528, almost a century before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, the remnants of a Spanish expedition reached the Gulf Coast of Texas. By July 1536, eight years later, Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca (c. 1490 - 1559) and three other survivors had walked 2,500 miles from Texas, across northern Mexico, to Sonora and ultimately to Mexico City. Cabeza de Vaca's account of this astonishing journey is now recognized as one of the great travel stories of all time and a touchstone of New World literature. But his career did not begin and end with his North American ordeal. Robin Varnum's biography, the first single-volume, cradle-to-grave account of the explorer's life in 80 years, tells the rest of the story. During Cabeza de Vaca's peregrinations through the American Southwest, he lived among and interacted with various Indian groups. When he and his non-Indian companions finally reconnected with Spaniards in northern Mexico, he was horrified to learn that his compatriots were enslaving Indians there. In Río de La Plata he tried to keep his men from robbing the Indians, enslaving them, or exploiting them sexually - policies that caused grumbling among the troops. When Cabeza de Vaca's men mutinied, he was sent back to Spain in chains to stand trial before the Royal Council of the Indies. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charles Henderson Norman. For centuries, Stoicism has had a large influence throughout various cultures. The great philosophers of ancient Greece and Rome, including Aristotle and Plato, gave Zeno of Citium inspiration, which led to him founding what is now known as Stoicism. In the Wake of the Dhow (eBook, PDF)
The Arabian dhow, with its characteristic features, is one of the most evocative images of the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The great cargo dhows represented a flourishing trade which stretched from the Mediterranean up to China in the time of the Portuguese and the Dutch from the 16th to the 18th centuries. When the pearling industry was at its height in the 19th and early 20th centuries, hundreds of pearling dhows were actively employed, carrying thousands of seamen diving for the finest pearls, a commodity much sought by the Western powers. In times of war, the dhows were magnificent fighting vessels and associated with the piracy so prevalent in these waters. This book is a product of over two hundred interviews with shipwrights and seamen in the Arabian Gulf and Oman over a period of nine years. It compares information given firsthand with the literature already written on the dhow and on Arab seafaring in the past 70 years, much of which was simply technical. Documenting the dhow as an important element in the prosperity of the area before the discovery of oil, we find in this book the geographical conditions and the historical-linguistical background of each dhow-type, the life-pattern in its role as cargo, pearl-diving, pirate and slaving vessel and also how the sea faring communities interacted with the dhow world.- Shop: buecher

The Rise of the West
"The Rise of the West, winner of the National Book Award for history in 1964, is famous for its ambitious scope and intellectual rigor. In it, McNeill challenges the Spengler-Toynbee view that a number of separate civilizations pursued essentially independent careers, and argues instead that human cultures interacted at every stage of their history. The author suggests that from the Neolithic beginnings of grain agriculture to the present major social changes in all parts of the world were triggered by new or newly important foreign stimuli, and he presents a persuasive narrative of world history to support this claim. In a retrospective essay titled ""The Rise of the West after Twenty-five Years," McNeill shows how his book was shaped by the time and place in which it was written (1954-63). He discusses how historiography subsequently developed and suggests how his portrait of the world's past in The Rise of the West should be revised to reflect these changes. "This is not only the most learned and the most intelligent, it is also the most stimulating and fascinating book that has ever set out to recount and explain the whole history of mankind. . . . To read it is a great experience. It leaves echoes to reverberate, and seeds to germinate in the mind."--H. R. Trevor-Roper, "New York Times Book Review- Shop: buecher

The Architectural Imagination at the Digital Turn (eBook, PDF)
The Architectural Imagination at the Digital Turn asks what it means to speak of a "digital turn" in architecture. It examines how architects at the time engaged with the digital and imagined future modes of practice, and looks at the technological, conceptual and economic phenomena behind this engagement. It argues that the adoption of digital technology in architecture was far from linear but depended on complex factors, from the operative logic of the technology itself to the context in which it was used and the people who interacted with it. Creating a mosaic-like account, the book presents debates, projects and publications that changed how architecture was visualized, fabricated and experienced using digital technology. Spanning the university, new media art institutes, ecologies, architectural bodies, fabrication and the city, it re-evaluates familiar narratives that emphasized formal explorations; instead, the book aims to complicate the "myth" of the digital by presenting a nuanced analysis of the material and social context behind each case study. During the 1990s, architects repurposed software and technological concepts from other disciplines and tested them in a design environment. Some architects were fascinated by its effects, others were more critical. Through its discussion on case studies, places and themes that fundamentally influenced discourse formation in the era, this book offers scholars, researchers and students fresh insights into how architecture can engage with the digital realm today.- Shop: buecher
