A History of China , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 689min
Trying to squeeze an entire history of Chinese civilization into a brief, one volume account is a formidable task, but one that has succeeded brilliantly here. Hilda Hookham has provided us with a concise story that, while not getting too entangled with personalities and cultural issues, manages to navigate the swirling passage of events that comprise over 3,000 years of Chinese political history. As a result, one is left with a singular impression of what Chinese civilization has meant, both as a cultural reality, and as a historical political force. It has been a tumultuous journey. Recurring themes repeat themselves in dynasty after dynasty: order and statecraft, resource allocation and use, imperialism and population growth, barbarian invasion and subjugation of outlying districts. Each dynasty right up to the current communist regime has followed similar paths. In this brilliant synthesis, we begin to see the patterns of stable government, the building up of infrastructure, reforms to help the peasantry, and reforms of government bureaucracy. Then comes the destabilizing influences of corruption, debauched court life, demands for greater taxation, failing infrastructure, famine, military revolt and invasions by barbarians. The peasants revolt, the military crumbles and a new dynasty takes control, with or without the support of foreign powers, depending on the period. Eventually, as in the case of the Mongols and the Manchurians, the barbarians end up as rulers. Throughout all of this turmoil, the essence of Chinese civilization has endured, sometimes, as in the case of the murderous Mao regime, at the cost of millions of lives. From Confucius and Lao-Tzu to Sun Yatsen, Chang Kaishek and Mao Zedong, Chinese civilization unfolds here in this audiobook as a comprehensible and highly enjoyable summary. ungekürzt. Civil War Experiences of a German Emigrant: Company D, 12th Michigan Regiment , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 144min
In this stirring memoir, Joseph Ruff recounts his experiences during the first year of his four years of service in the Union Army, Company D of the 12th Michigan Regiment. It was, as he describes, “[B]y far the most severe year of our service...a year of battles, severe marches, constant duties, privations, illness, and death.”Beginning as a green new recruit with no fanfare, no uniform, and only the bare necessities, Joseph became a seasoned soldier, at times living by his wits and off the land. Joseph recounts, in harrowing detail, his confrontations with the enemy and numerous narrow escapes. There was more than one occasion when Joseph felt that divine providence had not only saved him personally, but had guided the war, as well. One of the most important battles of the war, the Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6 of that first year. Joseph writes his harrowing account of the experience, beginning with a skirmish on the night of April 5, when he and 200 soldiers undertook a scouting expedition, little knowing that a force of 42,000 Confederate men was lying in wait prepared to attack next day.Fortunately, Joseph and his squad saw an outlying sentry, saving them from blundering into the entire enemy camp. Even so, they barely escaped through a barrage of bullets and returned to camp, carrying their wounded. Thus, they were able to deliver a warning to the Union camp, so timely it is thought to have affected the course of the war. Had the Union Army been caught unawares and defeated at Shiloh, it could have handed the Confederacy a victory. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Ellis. Village of Secrets: Defying the Nazis in Vichy France , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 829min
From the author of the New York Times bestseller A Train in Winter comes the fascinating story of a French village that helped save thousands hunted by the Gestapo during World War II. High up in the mountains of the southern Massif Central in France lie tiny, remote villages united by a long and particular history. During the Second World War, the inhabitants of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and its parishes saved thousands wanted by the Gestapo: resisters, Freemasons, communists, and, above all, Jews, many of them orphans whose parents had been deported to concentration camps. There were no informers, no denunciations, and no one broke ranks. During raids, the children would hide in the woods, their packs on their backs, waiting to hear the farmers' song that told them it was safe to return. After the war, Le Chambon became one of only two places in the world to be honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among Nations. Just why and how Le Chambon and its outlying villages came to save so many people has never fully been told. With unprecedented access to newly opened archives in France, Britain, and Germany, along with interviews documenting the testimony of surviving villagers, Caroline Moorehead paints an inspiring portrait of courage and determination: of what was accomplished when a small group of people banded together to oppose tyranny. A major contribution to the history of the Second World War, Village of Secrets sets the record straight about the events in Chambon and pays tribute to a group of heroic individuals for whom saving others became more important than their own lives. ungekürzt. Asian History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 45min
The significance of the study of the history of Asia requires no exceptional prominence, principally with the rise of China, India, and Japan as main supremacies of this continent. The Asian history could be seen as the combined history of many diverse outlying littoral regions such as South Asia, East Asia, and the Middle East connected by the internal frame of the Eurasian steppe. The littoral border was home to some of the world's most primitive civilizations, with each of the three sections evolving early civilizations about the lush river valleys. These valleys were rich as the earth there was fertile and could produce several root crops. The civilizations in the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and China had many things in common and probably traded expertise and philosophies like mathematics and the wheel. Other concepts like writing probably developed independently in every region. Cities, states, and then kingdoms established in these wetlands. The steppe expanse had always been occupied by equestrian nomads, and from the central steppes they could reach any area of they wished to in the Asia. The northern part of the continent, which covered most of Siberia, was also unapproachable to the steppe nomads because of tundra and the dense jungles. These Siberian regions were sporadically populated. The core and boundary were separated by deserts and mountain peaks. The Himalaya, Caucasus, Gobi Desert and Karakum Desert molded the blockades which the steppe horsemen could cross with struggle. While technically and ethnically the city inhabitants were more radical, they could not do much regimentally to protect against the mounted crowds of the steppe. Nevertheless, the wetlands did not have sufficient open plains to upkeep a big horse bound force. So the wanderers who occupied states in the Middle East were quickly required to familiarize to the native societies. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tracy Tupman. Island Summers: Memories of a Norwegian Childhood , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 466min
In 1947 Tilly’s grandmother bought an island. Its name is Småhølmene and it sits just off the coast of Norway. At first sight, the island seems bare, hardly more than a collection of rocks rising determinedly out of the water. But Mor-mor, as she was known, could see that Småhølmene was more than that when she purchased it in exchange for a mink coat. She built a two-storeyed wooden cabin on the island, an enclave against the sea water that would dash against the outlying rocks, galloping up the lagoon to slap against the moored boats. This is where Mor-mor and her young family would come every summer, escaping their mollycoddled life in the English countryside to run wild, get burnt, forage for juniper berries, thieve for gull eggs and swim in the shining sea. Lean and chic, Mor-mor smoked voraciously and scandalised the local villagers by cycling to the shops in nothing but a healthy tan. She loved the island fiercely; in her otherwise turbulent life, its rugged outcrops, messy abundance and promise of absolute solitude were constants that lasted throughout the years. This is the inheritance that Tilly embraced many years later when her own mother brought her family to Småhølmene. And when the island was in danger of being sold, she was spurred to do something that no one else had done before – she decided to spend a winter there, alone with her boyfriend. Fending for themselves, they were utterly cut off from outside help. But, in the silence of the cold, they gradually discovered that even in the bleakest of times, the island could take on new life. Glittering and bittersweet, Island Summers lovingly portrays three generations of women and the island that became so irrevocably part of their lives. Now Mor-mor’s great-grandchildren are taking their turn, enjoying endless summers on Småhølmene, continuing the story that was begun over 50 years ago. ungekürzt. Language: English. When China Rules the World: The End of the Western World and the Birth of a New Global Order , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 993min
According to even the most conservative estimates, China will overtake the United States as the world's largest economy by 2027 and will ascend to the position of world economic leader by 2050. But the full repercussions of China's ascendancy - for itself and the rest of the globe - have been surprisingly little explained or understood. In this far-reaching and original investigation, Martin Jacques offers provocative answers to some of the most pressing questions about China's growing place on the world stage. Martin Jacques reveals, by elaborating on three historical truths, how China will seek to shape the world in its own image. The Chinese have a rich and long history as a civilization-state. Under the tributary system, outlying states paid tribute to the Middle Kingdom. Ninety-four percent of the population still believes they are one race - "Han Chinese." The strong sense of superiority rooted in China's history promises to resurface in 21st century China and in the process strengthen and further unify the country. A culturally self-confident Asian giant with a billion-plus population, China will likely resist globalization as we know it. This exceptionalism will have powerful ramifications for the rest of the world and the United States in particular. As China is already emerging as the new center of the East Asian economy, the mantle of economic and, therefore, cultural relevance will in our lifetimes begin to pass from Manhattan and Paris to cities like Beijing and Shanghai. It is the American relationship with and attitude toward China, Jacques argues, that will determine whether the 21st century will be relatively peaceful or fraught with tension, instability, and danger. When China Rules the World is the first book to fully conceive of and explain the upheaval that China's ascendance will cause and the realigned global power structure it will create. ungekürzt. Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 594min
A deeply moving and engaging memoir by Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst, cofounder of The Cure, detailing the origins and creation of one of the most beloved bands of all time and Tolhurst's own return from the brink of self-destruction. "On a damp September morning in 1964, my mother threw Robert Smith and me together. A bus had been arranged to take children from the outlying areas to St. Francis of Assisi School in Crawley. On our first day of school, Robert and I stood at the designated stop at Hevers Avenue with our mothers, and that's when we met for the very first time. We were five years old." So began a lifelong friendship that 14 years later would result in the formation of The Cure, a quintessential postpunk band whose albums - such as "Three Imaginary Boys", "Pornography", and "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" - remain among the best loved and most influential of all time. As two of the first punks in the provincial English town of Crawley, Lol Tolhurst and Robert Smith didn't have it easy. Outsiders from the start, theirs was a friendship based initially on proximity and a shared love of music, from the punk that was raging in nearby London to the groundbreaking experimentation of David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy. First known as The Easy Cure, they began playing in pubs and soon developed their own unique style and approach to songwriting, resulting in timeless songs that sparked a deep sense of identification and empathy in listeners, songs like "Boys Don't Cry", "Just Like Heaven", and "Why Can't I Be You?," spearheading a new subculture dubbed "Goth" by the press. The music of The Cure was not only accessible, but also deeply subversive, challenging conventional notions of pop music and gender roles while inspiring a generation of devoted fans and a revolution in style. Cured is not only the first insider account of the early days of the band, it is a revealing look at the artistic evolution of the enigmatic ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lol Tolhurst.
