Criminal Macabre: The Complete Cal McDonald Stories (Second Edition) (eBook, ePUB)
The complete collection of Criminal Macabre prose stories by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) featuring two brand new tales and an introduction by horror legend John Carpenter! The world has two faces. The natural and the supernatural. The face we see every day, people filing past us in an almost zombie-like stupor, numb to the horrors of everyday life or driven to madness by the pain and agony of modern-day existence. And those are the people who aren't zombies or monsters! Cal McDonald is a detective with one foot in the real world, and one in the world of magic. For Cal, the horrors we all dream about in the fevered darkness of the night are all-too real, kept at bay through an almost constant influx of drugs to numb the pain, but never erase it. Cut from the same mold as Sam Spade, Jake Gittes, and the famous detectives of Chandler, Hammett and Spillane, Cal McDonald, whether he likes it or not, is all that stands between us and the nightmare world just outside our vision. Collects the complete Criminal Macabre prose stories Savage Membrane; Guns, Drugs, and Monsters; Dial M for Monster, All My Bloody Things, and two new prose stories: The Dead Son and Out of Water.- Shop: buecher

From the best-selling author of Just Remember to Breathe and The Last Hour, a shocking and poignant story of a family on the brink of destruction and the transformational events that could bring them back together - or tear them apart.Every day, Cole Roberts reminds himself that life wasn’t always this bleak. He was once passionately in love with Erin. Sam used to be an artistic and lively kid. They hadn’t always lived in a shabby two-room house in rural Alabama, where he runs a mediocre restaurant in the middle of nowhere. That was before Brenna disappeared. It was before Cole lost his job and they lost their home.Every day it gets worse. Erin drinks wine out of the bottle and spends her days with a tormented expression, searching the web for signs of their daughter. Sam hides in his room and rarely speaks. And Cole works himself to a stupor for a paycheck a fraction of the size of his old salary.Until one day, a phone call changes everything.Winter Flower is at once a tragic tale of the disappearance of a child; struggling with gender identity; of the dark world of sex-trafficking and the transformation and healing of a family. Sheehan-Miles' longest novel delves into the depths of family life - and how, sometimes, we can heal and find restoration. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Erika Cockerham. The Saltwater Marathon , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 122min
The Saltwater Marathon is a sci-fi thriller about a grief-stricken man who puts his emotions aside when he finds himself trapped in a mall with strangers being pursued by a supernatural threat. For the past six months, Bryan Combs has been consumed with guilt. He cheated on his wife, Sirena, and fell for the seductive charms of his boss, Carmela. The adultery proved too great for Sirena to handle, so she hopped in her car and drove it into the ocean. Her body was never recovered. While the fling may have ended, the remorse still remains, and now Bryan buries himself at work, opting for late night shifts at the mall, often drinking himself to sleep in the back office of his once beloved job. But everything changes the morning they show up.... Strangers at his office door...screaming, pleading and begging him to open the door because they're being pursued and desperately need somewhere to hide. As he awakens from his drunken stupor, he begins to wonder if this some sick joke put on by Carmela? Retribution against him for ending their torrid affair? Bryan won't be sure until he let these strangers in. However once he does, he soon witnesses for himself what has these people so afraid, so panicked, and he finds it impossible to stay caught in his own spiral of self-loathing. ungekürzt. Angel and the Frog: Becoming Your Own Angel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 277min
Cleverly crafted by acclaimed author and motivational speaker Reverend Leo Booth, The Angel and the Frog is both a charming fable about relationships and an exquisite insight into life and human relationships, similar in the way George Orwell's classic Animal Farm was an insight into politics and governmental Big Brother. When Christine, a tiny angel in training, falls from the sky into Turnbridge Pond - though not by accident - Cedric the Frog is shaken from his stupor as he quickly swims to save her. Christine's mission is to show Cedric and the other animals how to connect and ultimately become angels themselves, bringing true spirituality into their lives through a system called The Process - an interconnection of insight, wisdom, and harmony. This imaginary world is a welcome metaphor for our lives today, where many feel disconnected from spirituality. It highlights social issues facing society today - racism, bullying, homophobia, emotional abuse, low self-esteem, and shame. These are seemingly beyond our ability to control. The only option we have is how to respond to them. These difficult topics are presented with subtlety and grace, with a great moral ending and characters you have no choice but to fall in love with along the way. The Angel and the Frog is an uplifting listen for all ages and all denominations, where, in the end, Cedric becomes an amphibian ambassador of spirituality, love, and what it means to become your own angel. ungekürzt. Ants and Elephants , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 94min
Ants and Elephants is a story about a 12-year-old boy named Wil who is bullied by Big Mike. Wil admits to being afraid of Big Mike, who has threatened to stomp him. The guy is twice Wil's size and has buddies only too willing to help him beat Wil to a pulp. Chloey, Wil's girlfriend, will not allow him to be intimidated. This savvy young lady teaches Wil psychological techniques that will help him stand up to his enemy. Meanwhile Wil builds a tree house and stakes it out, skipping school until he's mastered the art of showing Big Mike who's boss. Chloey tells everyone Wil has tonsillitis, and brings his schoolwork to the tree house. Wil becomes a town hero when he rescues the old proprietor from a burning building. With his esteem at an all-time high, Wil returns to school. When Big Mike walks over to his table in the cafeteria, Wil doesn't blink. He tells Big Mike off without raising his voice, leaving the bully in a dazed stupor. I enjoyed the witty dialogue, including the friendship between Wil and Chloey. This story can be enjoyed by all ages, but it's especially geared to grammar and middle school-age children. The message Mr. Jordan conveys is constructive and needful. With the right mindset and technique, the blundering elephant is no match for the savvy ant. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob Jordan. The Unbraiding of Anna Brown: Lone Star Love, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 229min
Anna wanted a job but was unprepared for the emotional labor she would endure when she convinced Carter to hire her to keep house and mind his small son after the death of his wife. She discovers that the gentle, teasing demeanor she'd witnessed from the cowboy previously has been buried along with his wife, forcing her to contend with the glowering, ill-tempered man who snaps at her and doesn't notice or appreciate her earnest efforts. She quietly suffers his apathy and impatience until a single snub pushes her to her breaking point, causing her to take drastic action to get his attention. Carter didn't expect such behavior from this sweet, innocent girl. It startles him out of his stupor long enough to feel his palm itching to connect with her naughty backside. He finds himself slowly drawn out of his grief and depression thanks to the gutsy but kind female presence in his life. Anna discovers that the return of the cowboy's awareness and ability to care means he is on to her penchant for danger and recklessness, and he's not having it. She finds herself getting the bare-bottomed spanking of her life, and feels loved by a man for the first time. Then he abruptly ends her employment. Anna flees, devastated and confused, and Carter knows he must straighten out the situation before he can claim this infuriating and enchanting woman as his wife. ungekürzt. Language: English. When months of coaxing and analyzing fail to rouse Olivia from her stupor, big sister Miranda decides the sisters should fly off to Barcelona for some “vacation therapy”. Crashed: A Junior Bender Mystery, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 635min
Introducing Junior Bender, the favorite burglar turned private investigator of Hollywood crooks. Junior Bender is a Los Angeles burglar with a magic touch. Since he first started breaking into houses at age fourteen, he's never once been caught. But now, after twenty-two years building an exemplary career, Junior has been blackmailed by Trey Annunziato, one of the most powerful crime bosses in LA, into acting as a private investigator on the set of Trey's porn venture, which someone keeps sabotaging. The star Trey has lined up to do all that's unwholesome on camera is Thistle Downing, America's beloved child star, who now lives alone in a drug-induced stupor, destitute and uninsurable. Her starring role will be the scandalous fall-from-grace gossip of rubberneckers across the country. No wonder Trey needs help keeping the production on track. Junior knows what he should do - but doing the right thing will land him on the wrong side of LA's scariest mob boss. With the help of his precocious twelve-year-old daughter, Rina, and his criminal sidekick, ex-getaway driver Louie the Lost, Junior will have to pull off a miracle to get out of this mess. Timothy Hallinan is the Edgar - and Macavity Award - nominated author of over a dozen widely praised books, including the Poke Rafferty Bangkok thrillers and the Junior Bender series. In 2010 he conceived and edited an e-book of original short stories by twenty mystery writers, Shaken: Stories for Japan, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Japanese disaster relief. ungekürzt. Transfixed by Prehistory (eBook, PDF)
An examination of how modern art was impacted by the concept of prehistory and the prehistoricPrehistory is an invention of the late nineteenth century. In that moment of technological progress and acceleration of production and circulation, three major Western narratives about time took shape. One after another, these new fields of inquiry delved into the obscure immensity of the past: first, to surmise the age of the Earth; second, to find the point of emergence of human beings; and third, to ponder the age of art. Maria Stavrinaki considers the inseparability of these accounts of temporality from the disruptive forces of modernity. She asks what a history of modernity and its art would look like if considered through these three interwoven inventions of the longue durée. Transfixed by Prehistory attempts to articulate such a history, which turns out to be more complex than an inevitable march of progress leading up to the Anthropocene. Rather, it is a history of stupor, defamiliarization, regressive acceleration, and incessant invention, since the "new" was also found in the deep sediments of the Earth. Composed of as much speed as slowness, as much change as deep time, as much confidence as skepticism and doubt, modernity is a complex phenomenon that needs to be rethought. Stavrinaki focuses on this intrinsic tension through major artistic practices (Cézanne, Matisse, De Chirico, Ernst, Picasso, Dubuffet, Smithson, Morris, and contemporary artists such as Pierre Huyghe and Thomas Hirschhorn), philosophical discourses (Bataille, Blumenberg, and Jünger), and the human sciences. This groundbreaking book will attract readers interested in the intersections of art history, anthropology, psychoanalysis, mythology, geology, and archaeology.- Shop: buecher
