In a 1973 film that bares many similarities to Bruce Lee's debut film The Big Boss, The Awaken Punch's Henry Yu Yang plays an altruistic fighter who begins to build a name for himself as he violently cleans up a town from within it's more seedier elements. But when he must abide by a promise to his dying father to give up his fighting ways, he will be faced with a new challenge in the arrival of the knife-throwing master Tien Feng (Fist of Fury) and his gang. With action from the legendary Yuen Woo-Ping (Matrix, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and a cameo from a young Jackie Chan and others, this basher is the epitome of the Punch and Block violence that began a long trend within Martial Arts cinema. USA aka title: Fury of the Black Belt. The Prodigal Boxer (1972) is an early take on the legend of martial artist Fong Sai-Yuk (later to be portrayed by the likes of Jet LI and Alexander Fu-Sheng), here played by Mang Fei. Once Fong Inadvertently kills a student of the rival school run by Iron Hand Tan (Kurata Yasuaki), this action leads to a series of near death confrontations between the men concluding in a tournament battle of the ages. Choreographed by Shaw Brothers' Lau Kar-Wing (the brother of the great Gordon Liu and Lau Kar-Leung) this film represents the brawling style of the time as well as the genesis of the more stylistic "Shapes" trend of martial arts action that would soon follow.

“The Seagull” is an amazing and touching ballet performance in two acts based on the play of the same name by Anton Chekhov. It tells a moving love story about young people refl ecting on their human existence and the art of theatre acting. The romantic and artistic conflicts of the four characters are beautifully choreographed by Maya Plisetskaya who also dances as the main character Nina Zarietchnaya. Plisetskaya is ranked among the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century. Her superior choreography is brilliant, with strong images and excellent dancers whose performance gives a breathtaking adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s play. The accompanied music of Rodion Shchedrin amplifies the moving story. With his music the pre-eminently Russian composer shows his passion for Russian folklore and folk music, Russian poetry and literature. Furthermore Shchedrin succeeds in synthesising traditional and new forms by using every contemporary technique of composition including aleatoric and serial. This production shows the ballet performance live from the historic Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow 1980. Due to the high professional level of the dancers and musicians it is a unique and very enjoyable experience for the spectators and a historical document of the outstanding dancer Maya Plisetskaya as well.

Between 1978 and 1981, Ericka Beckman created a landmark suite of experimental films. Known as “The Super-8 Trilogy,” these films are among the most iconic and original works of the “Pictures Generation.” * * Featuring herself, and a cast of artist-friends (including James Welling, Matt Mullican, and Mike Kelley), her work is informed by Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget's theories on the cognitive development of children, the culture of televised sports, as well as the heyday of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's musicals. * * The films: “We Imitate, We Break Up” (1978), “The Broken Rule” (1979), and “Out of Hand” (1981) are not based on dialogues or a classical narrative structure, but on dream-like choreographed movements, songs, keyed-up colors, and special effects. As the artist states: “Film is creating a reality through the makeshift. My films move backward, using narrative structures as does the mind of anyone trying to grasp the meaning of images in their memory.” * * Accompanying the DVD (Multizone, PAL/SECAM, 83 minutes) is a booklet containing an introduction by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Douglas Eklund—who organized “The Pictures Generation. 1974–1984” exhibition in 2009—as well as a conversation between the artist, Lionel Bovier, and Fabrice Stroun, curator of her retrospective at Kunsthalle Bern (2013). * * Born in Hampstead, NY, in 1951, Ericka Beckman lives and works in New York. She is a filmmaker, photographer, installation artist, and writer. * * Published with Kunsthalle Bern.

Arthaus presents a DVD of Natalia Makarova’s legendary choreography of the famous classical ballet La Bayadère. The ballet was originally choreographed in 1877 by the great master of Russian classical ballet, Marius Petipa and later adapted by the Kirov Ballet. The Kirov version has been re-created by Natalia Makarova and is now available on DVD.The ballet was first seen outside of Russia in London in 1961 when excerpts of the work were performed as The Kingdom of the Shades. It was during this Kirov Ballet tour that Nureyev defected to the West. Two years later he staged The Kingdom of the Shades for the Royal Ballet. The full-length ballet regained popularity with Nathalia Makarova’s (herself a former Kirov Dancer) sumptuous restaging of the work for the American Ballet Theatre in 1980 and subsequently for The Royal Ballet in 1989.La Bayadère is set in legendary India. The warrior Solor is in love with the beautiful temple dancer Nikiya. This provokes the murderous jealousy of her rival, Gamzatti, encouraged by the High Bramin, whose own designs on Nikiya are less than pure. Seeking solace after the death of Nikiya, Solor’s opium-induced delusions present a ‘Kingdom of the Shades’, creating the most hypnotic and famous line of “arabesques penchées” in classical dance. Finally Solor and Nikiyia are reunited as spirits beyond the reach of man. With its two starring ballerina roles, this classic is a perennial favourite of the ballet repertory. This DVD captures the Royal Ballet’s famous 1989 'all-stars' performance of La Bayadère with the divine Asylmuratova as Nikiya and today's principal dancer, the much beloved Darcey Bussell, as Gamzatti in one of her first important roles at the Royal Ballet. Royal Ballet’s Tetsuya Kumakawa, who literally sprang to fame as the Bronze Idol, joins these two. Dancing in this role he brought the house down every night and gained himself the Prix de Lausanne.

After Nikolaus Lehnhoff’s great success with Parsifal, Lohengrin and Tristan und Isolde this is his highly acclaimed Tannhäuser coproduced with De Nederlandse Opera and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.Nikolaus Lehnhoff’s production is based on the Paris version by Richard Wagner with an extended Venusberg scene and a ballet very surprisingly choreographed by Amir Hosseinpour and Jonathan Lunn. The minimalist staging and Raimund Bauer’s ingenious sets make this a Tannhäuser for our time. The cast as always with Lehnhoff has nothing to match these days.An extra feature entitled “Tannhäuser – The Revolutionary” includes interviews with stage director, conductor and cast as well as backstage material.
