Hurrying to the old bridge that crossed Yellow Creek, Courtney stepped to the side as a car came up behind her. The bridge was only wide enough for one car and even foot traffic had to climb up on the narrow ledge for safety. The car slowed and the driver's side window rolled down. A familiar face greeted Courtney. "Hey, Courtney, how about a ride?" he asked. She shook her head. "No, thanks, I'm good," she said. "It's only a few more blocks." The driver looked up to the sky. "You won't make it before the storm hits," he argued. "Come on, I'll feel guilty all night if I leave you here." She smiled. "Okay, if you put it that way," she agreed, jogging over to the passenger side of the car and letting herself in. The door lock clicked as she buckled her seatbelt and she looked up in surprise. "It does that automatically," the driver said with an apologetic shrug. Courtney scooted against the door and grasped the handle. "You know, I think I'll just walk anyway," she said, pulling against the handle. But the door didn't open. She tried it again, but it was still locked tight. "Child locks," the driver said, a smile on his face. "You can't get out until I let you out." She pressed the window button, but it also stayed in place. "Listen, I don't want to be in this car," she said firmly. "Now please let me out or I'm going to scream." He chuckled softly, leaned forward and placed his hand against her cheek, rubbing it intimately. "If you scream, no one will hear you," he said, as he slipped his hand down to her neck. "But you can do it if you like. I always love to hear a girl's scream." For 10 years, young girls have been disappearing from the streets of Freeport and the surrounding towns. Finally Jackson Donne has it figured out. After giving up on the private investigation business, he's looking toward the future - one that involves getting married to Kate Ellison. Kate's got him focused on living the good life: planning the wedding, finishing college, and anticipating a romantic Hawaiian honeymoon. Until an anonymous email with a link and an old picture of him on the police force shows up in his mailbox. And once Donne clicks the link, nothing else in his life matters. Bill Martin has it easy. The police detective spends his time drinking coffee and chasing down people who don't pay their parking tickets. The plan is to keep his head down until his pension kicks in and he can live the even-easier life. That all stops the day Jackson Donne shows up at his office. When Jackson Donne clicked on the link, he saw a live stream of the one thing he never expected to see. Six years ago his fiancée, Jeanne Baker, died in a car accident with a drunk driver. Or so Donne thought. Because when his web browser opens, he's taken to a video of Jeanne bound to a chair, bruised and screaming, but very much alive. He starts to investigate but quickly finds out he's lost most of his contacts over the years. The live stream has stopped working. The police hold a grudge that stems back to the days when he turned in his corrupt police colleagues, and neither they nor the FBI are willing to believe a dead girl's been kidnapped. As his investigation goes down one blind alley after another, Donne's obsession with finding Jeanne grows. He begins pushing everyone away. Kate, seeing all he's worked for slipping away, begs Donne to tell her what's going on. And when he refuses, she's left angry and with no choice but to leave him. Vulnerable and alone, but unable to stop looking, Donne turns to Bill Martin - the only man to love Jeanne as much as he did - for help. And that decision could cost Donne everything. ungekürzt. First in an all-new suspense series! Here's an excerpt: Around the sides of the thick brown leather, Ash O'Malley made out a fleshy chin and thinning, brown hair threaded with gray covered in a thin layer of dirt and debris. She back-pedaled along the narrow strip of the path shed just traipsed down, losing her balance as she registered her boot print on the poor man's now-crushed his nose. She made a noise that sounded somewhere between a gag and a scream as she clutched her chest. This could not be happening. Not today. Then, his image clicked in her mind. She recognized the man, and her midsection rolled, pitched, and somersaulted over itself. She rose from her rump and crab-crawled, her hands plopping into her own footfalls, clearly visible next to several other tracks in the boggy soil. The man…the obviously dead man was Dr. Cockcroft, director of the Audubon Society. And now she'd stepped on her dead almost boss. "Nope, this cannot be happening," she whispered. She closed her eyes and pinched herself. A soft breeze brushed her overheated skin and the faint sounds of sluggish water siphoned through the tangled thoughts careening through Ash's head, bringing a much-needed stillness. She forced herself to look at the scene in front of her. Dr. Cockcroft lay half-buried in a slight ditch just off the pathway. Besides his trodden face-she winced and suppressed the urge to gag-he was bruised and bloody. Like he'd fallen from a great height. And his scalp, mangled…Ash stumbled even as her gaze searched out more potential cottonmouths. Seeing none, she gave in to her desire and fell forward to retch up the gumbo she'd eaten that morning-the gumbo she'd saved so she'd have a good meal to start her day.She kicked her feet into the dirt, struggling for purchase before she shot back the way she'd come, not unlike a sprinter. She fumbled for her phone, dirt and grit coating her hip as she struggled to pull it from her pants pocket. Her fingers shook but she managed to press 9-1-1. Her breath broke in a sob as the operator answered."A-a b-body. There's a dead body."She slid down the mangrove's trunk, heedless of its short, painful barbs digging through her blouse and into her skin. Her butt hit the boggy soil and harder roots and she winced, unable to take her eyes off the man. Ash forced herself to listen to the dispatcher's questions. She ignored the faint hum of gathering insects as they closed in around her sweat-drenched form. She closed her burning, too-dry eyes, unwilling to watch the bugs land on Dr. Cockcroft's exposed face. Ash understood the circle of life but that didn't mean she wanted to witness it this close up. She gave her location, head bent, forehead to her knees, phone mashed to her ear. Her fingertips tingled and her body felt heavy, biological responses to the scare. She stared at a leaf, a perfect specimen, and wondered idly if she was going into shock.

Straight out of the kitchen, Making Dinner is an all-female San Francisco favorite that has been labeled indie, folk, and pop. Making Dinner takes over the stage the way the smell of cookies baking takes over a kitchen. "It was like all of the ingredients finally stirred themselves together, and, well, dinner was served!" Eva Jo reminisces. Eva Jo Meyers recorded her first full length album in 2001 in Thailand, with Bangkok-based indie punk rockers, Sepia. Making Dinner is the fourth band she's fronted. 'I've been writing songs, literally, since I was six years old, and have been in one band or another since the 7th grade'. Meyers, who writes all the band's songs, says 'We've had some incredible shows. 12 Galaxies was a fantastic start, we brought down the house and it just keeps getting better. We've got a set list of catchy songs, but what really counts is that we have this great chemistry. Our goal is to have fun, and it's contagious. Plus, Dave Morey from KFOG said we're 'not bad!'' The singer/songwriter had known cellist, Marianka Madey, since the two were in kindergarten. 'If you had told Marianka, at the age of six, that someday she'd play in a band, she would have run away shrieking. This was a girl that was the first cellist in the Empire State Youth Orchestra. She barely even knew who the Beatles were.' But play in a band she does. Katie Pilat, the band's bassist, came by way of a new year's resolution. 'I got the bass as a birthday present years ago, and then got a new job two days later and the bass ended up under the bed,' Katie recalls. 'But last year I decided it was time to play, so my resolution was to call up Eva Jo to see if she wanted to jam.' Katie and Eva Jo had met playing frisbee in Golden Gate Park. 'The first night as I arrived at Katie's I was feeling exhausted from the day, but the session was so great, I left exhilarated,' Eva admits. 'Katie has this amazing talent, she's the effervescence in a song. She makes things float'. Both Devorah Rosner (back-up vocals and persussion) and Marianka had already been playing out with Eva Jo, and were both working on her new album at Goldfinger Studios in Novato, CA. 'After we had the four of us, the only thing missing was the beat. We had a show coming up at 12 Galaxies in a few weeks, so I called up a former coworker and told her to get her drum kit out of storage. Zarah Gamaldi was on board, and we had a band! Devorah has this voice like melted butter and has been on stage her whole life, so when I told her we were ready to play, we were all pretty excited.' Katie Crouch, the newest member of Making Dinner, joined the band in July 2008 when her friend and former Making Dinner violinist Genevieve Coyle left the band to go back to school. 100% classically trained, Katie C. is plugged in for the first time and enjoying the freedom of making up her own music. 'I was excited to try a new type of violin playing,' she gushes, 'and at the first rehearsal, I felt like everything clicked.' Katie C. loves the stage and also performs locally with Symphony Parnassus.

OPAL AXIS is Leila Armush and Jim Harris. The disc is made up of compositions by Leila and Jim, who, in spite of different musical tastes, both pursue unique yet accessible music with somewhat ambiguous lyrics. Opal Axis started in 2005, when Leila wanted to start a band and Jim had just come out of one. From the beginning, things clicked, and a working and creative process quickly developed. They attributed this partially to the fact that their birthdays are just days apart, both being Libras, they named the band Opal Axis for Libra's birthstone. In 2006, a classical pianist named Chad joined the band as an auxiliary member. His contributions on both piano and electronics can be heard on the band's current self-titled EP. Opal Axis played a series of shows at coffee houses on the peninsula in 2007, but spent 2008 in the studio recording. Opal Axis is currently back on the live performance circuit throughout the Bay Area. Leila was born in 1981 and grew up in Dallas. As a child, she took piano lessons and learned to play "by ear", which laid the foundation for the composing she began as a young teen. At age 15, inspired by then-favorites Sarah McLachlan and Jewel, Leila began private voice lessons and found her voice. Her high school advisor helped her create CDs of her music, which she sold at school. When she graduated at 17, she had written more than 100 songs. In college, she upgraded from a cassette-tape recorder to a four-track. At that time she also found a deep connection and profound appreciation for the music of Tori Amos, who inspired her to reach a new level of complexity and maturity in both her compositions and lyrics. Throughout college she worked on her own, spending more time cooped up recording in her dorm than socializing. After graduating, she moved from Austin to the Bay Area and decided it was time to work with other musicians. She met talented guitar player Jim Harris in 2005 and together they became Opal Axis. Jim was born in 1965 in Evanston, IL. He started playing guitar at age 12, and discovered synthesizers and electronics in 1987 when playing in a New Edge guitar-synth duet. By the mid '90s he was on his own, composing down-tempo electronic tracks with spoken word and monologues on top. In 1997 he was signed and the self-titled CD R.U.O.K.? came out on Quantum Loop, a sub-label of 21st Circuitry in San Francisco. The CD (a mix of Eno, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and Laurie Anderson) got great reviews but sank like a rock, as it was too arty for the general public. Wanting to make music that was more accessible and owning a Celtic Bouzouki (a.k.a. octave mandolin), Jim teamed up with a friend and formed the Capo Brothers, a guitar-bouzouki duet. Since they were instrumental, their high level of musicianship and catchy material allowed the band to play many shows around the Bay Area until life caused the band to go into an inactive state. With time on his hands, Jim answered Leila's Craigslist ad in 2005 and Opal Axis was born. Leila: Vox, production, piano and electronics Jim: Guitars, production and electronics And Chad Glenn, piano and electronics.

Crystal Day was born in a small town in Virginia. She started her first band at the age of 12 and entered a studio in Nashville, Tennessee and started recording songs for her first CD "Anything Can Happen." She began performing throughout the East Coast at various events throughout her teenage years, including the N.C. State and VA Fairs, NASCAR Speedways: Loews, Martinsville, and South Boston Motor Speedway. She ventured out to Los Angeles to perform with top performers from around the world at Universal Studios for the World Championships of Performing Arts. Crystal then traveled to Europe as the youngest performer in the "Amsterdam Music Festival" and was invited back and toured for the next 3 years. "It completely changed my life, in the best way possible. My eyes were open to a world much bigger than I imagined." She moved to Los Angeles after high school and began performing at various venues around L.A., including the Viper Room, the Derby, and numerous others. She began recording and writing music alongside Grammy Winner Tom Weir at Studio City Sound, where she met Jorge Costa. "I call Jorge my music soul mate. When we met, there was this instant understanding. We immediately knew we had a special connection and wanted to start working together as soon as possible." They began writing, arranging, and recording demos together. They tried various directions, but nothing quite clicked. Still writing, she ventured on, working harder "I than ever to find her "sound." "I think each person has a true sound, and when you find that, it's like magic." Exciting news came, when they found an investor to provide the funds for the album. Finally, the album was mixed at one of the most famous studios in Los Angeles, Conway Studios and mastered with the Mastering Lab. Crystal has been performing shows around Los Angeles and is exciting for what the future holds. "Just wait and see what I have brewing."
