The Captain's Table , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 407min
London, 1875. At Lady Cornford’s famous soiree (sugared almonds and tittle-tattle), everyone is gossiping about Henry Ellis Margam’s latest hit, The Widow’s Secret. Only a few people know that one of Lady C’s guests, the enigmatic Bella Wallis, is in fact the best-selling novelist. Bella punishes evil-doers by exposing them as thinly disguised characters in the books she writes under her male pseudonym. Armed with her pen, the handsome Miss Wallis surrounds herself with useful men: the dashing Philip Westland, possibly a government spy; Captain Quigley, Bella's fixer; and his shady assistant, Murch, who can always crack a bone or two when someone needs persuading. Westland comes to Bella with a problem: his best friend, Kennett, is smitten by the heiress Miss Mary Skillane. But Mary’s father, Sir William is ‘an old fraud with a beautiful daughter’ and she has been promised to Robert Judd, a vulgar treasure seeker. Mary is due to inherit the Skillane pearls, currently residing in a red lacquer box in a Cornish bank vault. But the pearls it seems were ill-gotten, and as Bella and her band uncover more of the strange business, a new Henry Ellis Margam novel looks set to be written, if Bella can first side-step her own affairs of the heart, and evade a brutal threat to her life.... ungekürzt. Walk of Shame , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 370min
Sparks fly between a misunderstood New York socialite and a cynical divorce lawyer in this lively standalone rom-com from the USA Today best-selling author of Blurred Lines and Love Story. Pampered heiress Georgianna Watkins has a party-girl image to maintain, but all the shopping and clubbing is starting to feel a little bit hollow - and a whole lot lonely. Though Georgie would never admit it, the highlights of her week are the mornings when she comes home at the same time as her uptight, workaholic neighbor is leaving to hit the gym and put in a long day at the office. Teasing him is the most fun Georgie's had in years - and the fuel for all her naughtiest daydreams. Celebrity divorce attorney Andrew Mulroney doesn't have much time for women, especially spoiled tabloid princesses who spend more time on Page Six than at an actual job. Although Georgie's drop-dead gorgeous, she's also everything Andrew resents: the type of girl who inherited her penthouse instead of earning it. But after Andrew caps one of their predawn sparring sessions with a surprise kiss - a kiss that's caught on camera - all of Manhattan is gossiping about whether they're a real couple. And nobody's more surprised than Andrew to find that the answer just might be yes. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Susannah Jones, Joe Arden. In your hands, you hold the secret to transforming your life. Big words? Yes, but this is a plan that has already proven itself with millions of people around the world. In a Sunday-morning sermon, Will told his congregation he wanted to make the world a complaint-free zone and, to prove he was serious, he passed out purple bracelets to each church member and offered them a challenge. "If you catch yourself complaining, take the bracelet and move it to the other wrist." Fresh Air Archive: Alan Shepard and Rose Troche, Hörbuch, Digital, 41min
Retired astronaut Alan Shepard and independent film director, producer, and writer Rose Troche on this archival edition of Fresh Air. Shepard was America's first man in space in 1961; the voyage covered 302 miles and lasted fifteen minutes. Ten years later with Apollo 14, he made it to the moon, playing golf on the moon's surface. In 1969, the Apollo 11 landed on the moon, and Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. Early in his space career, Shepard was diagnosed with an inner ear syndrome, which could have ended his career, so he grounded himself in 1963 and became chief of the Astronaut Office. Later, after a risky operation took care of his ear problem, Shepard returned to flight status, becoming commander of the Apollo 14. He co-wrote the book Moon Shot. Troche and co-producer and co-writer Guinevere Turner made the lesbian comedy, Go Fish. The movie was hailed as the newest "crossover hit." The two say they wanted to make a film about the community they lived in: "young, urban, multicultural, out, and burning up the phone lines gossiping about whom went home with who last night." The film played at the New York Lesbian and Gay Film festival, and opened at the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. (Original Airdate: 6/6/1994) Language: English. An Old-Fashioned Girl , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 597min
Immediately following the success of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott sat down to write An-Old Fashioned Girl, expanding on the subject of rich versus poor that she explored in her first novel. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Fanny and her friends dress and behave as their elders do, flirting with boys and gossiping. When Polly breaks free to go sledding, Fan’s rapscallion brother Tom is delighted, but the Shaws explain that it’s not done for young ladies to take this kind of exercise. It takes wise grandmother Shaw to help the girls understand each other. In her preface, Alcott explains that “the demand for a sequel, in beseeching little letters that made refusal impossible”, made it necessary to advance the story six years when Polly returns to Boston to live independently and in genteel poverty as a piano teacher; Fan is bored with the social life that never changes; and Tom is a mischievous college student and a dandy. Alcott references the budding women’s rights movement, stressing the importance of both women and men finding work with a purpose in it, while steering her characters through the romances and crises of adulthood. ungekürzt. Ten One-Act Plays , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 205min
Ten One-Act Plays By Alice GerstenbergPresented by The Online StageAlice Gerstenberg (1885-1972) was an American playwright, actress, and activist. She is best known for her many feminist plays, which often feature female lead characters and all-female casts (a rare occurrence at the time). This is a collection of ten one-act plays, which cover a wide range of topics -highlights include a lighthearted farce involving gossiping women, a satire about dinner parties, and a comedy about the pretensions of conventional theater, but some plays also touch on more serious themes such as death, war, and the effects of an unhappy marriage. Also among this set of plays is Overtones, Gerstenberg's most original and best-known work about two women, Harriet and Margaret, and their "primitive selves". Overtones is known as one of the pioneering works of psychological drama and was a revolutionary presentation of the subconscious in theatre; major playwrights such as Eugene O'Neill have acknowledged its influence on their own work.Gerstenberg's most significant contribution to the little theater movement was her founding of the Playwright's Theatre of Chicago, which opened up opportunities for local playwrights to produce their work. She was awarded the Chicago Foundation for Literature Award in 1938.He Said and She SaidOvertonesThe UnseenThe BufferAttunedThe Pot BoilerHeartsBeyondFourteenThe Illuminati in Drama LibreFeaturing the voices of Leanne Yau, Andy Harrington, Anna Grace, Sarah Bacaller, Sara Morsey, Tomas Peter, Ron Altman, Peter Tucker, John Burlinson, Elizabeth Klett and Amanda Friday.Audio edited by Leanne Yau and Denis Daly ungekürzt.
