So, what would Mary Ann do? As the sweet, polite, and thoughtful Mary Ann Summers from Kansas in the hit series Gilligan's Island, Dawn Wells created an unforgettable and beloved character that still connects with people 50 years from the show's debut in 1964. As the "good girl" among the group of castaways on a tiny island, she was often positioned against the glamorous and exotic Ginger Grant, played by Tina Louise, prompting many to ask: Are you a Ginger or a Mary Ann? This book, charmingly narrated by Dawn Wells herself, not only helps listeners answer that question for themselves but also sends the inspirational and heartwarming message that yes, good girls do finish first. Part self-help, part memoir, and part humor - with a little classic TV nostalgia for good measure - What Would Mary Ann Do? contains 12 chapters on everything from how Mary Ann would respond to changes in today's culture to addressing issues confronting single women and mothers. Wells brings along her fellow characters from Gilligan's Island to illustrate certain principles, such as incorporating the miserly Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) in a discussion on money. Anecdotal sidebars also describe fascinating facts and compelling memories from the show as well as some trivia questions to challenge fans and followers. This book provides inspiring lessons from TV's favorite good girl. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dawn Wells. Lights! Microphone! Action! Hilarious Hollywood spoofs were a beloved feature on many classic Jack Benny radio shows. Regular cast members and guest stars alike were recruited to send up cinema classics like Casablanca, High Noon, and Sunset Boulevard. Celebrities could count on large laughs - and, looking good next to Jack's lovably vainglorious and miserly self - while poking fun at their most famous films. Even without guests, the movie mockery continued. Jack would simply announce a sketch and proclaim that he would be playing the lead! The rest of the cast, of course, was not to be out done - note Rochester's rendition of As Time Goes By and Mel Blanc's "Sleepy Mexican" routine. A treasure trove for both Benny-philes and film fans, this set includes 12 digitally restored and remastered episodes, performances by the likes of Bob Hope and Edward G. Robinson. Episodes Include: The Hunchback of Notre Dame 03-17-40 Mr. Benny Goes to Washington 01-24-43 Casablanca 10-17-43 The Killers 11-24-46, It's a Wonderful Life 02-02-47 Dark Passage 11-02-47 The Treasure of Sierra Madre 05-01-49 Sunset Boulevard 03-25-51 Captain Horatio Hornblower 09-23-51 High Noon 09-28-52 Road to Bali 01-11-53 The Snows of Kilimanjaro 03-08-53 Language: English. This magnificent novel is about the murder of a miserly, aged pawnbroker and her younger sister by a radical, destitute St. Petersburg student named Raskolnikov, and the emotional, mental, and physical effects that follow. It is a remarkable masterpiece about a man's turbulent inner life and his relationship to others and to society at large. Dostoevsky explored the human condition on many levels in this great piece, and among the main themes the novel explores is the rather strange theory that criminals have a spiritual need to be punished - that indeed they demand it. Today we might think of this as masochism and dismiss Dostoevsky's thesis as the powerful wanderings of a mind steeped in the mysticism of the Eastern Orthodox Church. But this wonderful classic is far more complex. Raskolnikov the intellectual divides humanity into two types: the meek, submissive mass of mankind and the "Supermen". The Nietzschean Superman can violate any law or principle to attain his beneficial ends. Since Raskolnikov has allied himself with the Superman, he intends to prove his superiority by committing a murder without remorse by eliminating an "undesirable" person. The novel's central question is whether it is justifiable to commit an atrocity in order to improve humanity. Dostoevsky shows us that a person cannot control and direct his life solely with his reason and intellect, that free will is limited. Listen as one of the finest psychological novels ever written unfolds. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. The wild adventure that David Balfour takes in Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped starts with the newly orphaned boy travelling to his uncle's terrifying House of Shaws. Having failed in an attempt to murder young David, the miserly Ebeneezer Balfour, who would rather keep the fortune to which the child is now entitled, arranges for a kidnapping aboard a ship bound for the new world. A fortunate collision with a small craft from France carrying young Balfour's saviour in the shape of Alan Breck Stewart saves the boy from the intended slavery and sets him on the extraordinary journey across the Highlands and island of Scotland that has become one of the most famous adventure stories of our time. Set against the backdrop of the Jacobite uprisings and the attempts by the Scottish clans to rid their country of the English, Stevenson used many of the real characters of the uprisings in his novel. Most importantly is Alan Breck Stewart, the chief suspect in the notorious murder of the English government man Colin Campbell placed on the Stewart estates following their forfeiture after the Stewarts' near conquering of the English at Culloden. Initially dismissed as a boys' yarn, Kidnapped has become one of the most influential of Stevenson's widely admired works. So much so that in 2007, when Edinburgh celebrated its year as the first UNESCO City of Literature, three versions of the book were made freely available to the public, with copies being left on buses and in other public places. ungekürzt. In the 1970s, Dolly Freed lived off the land dirt cheap and plum easy. Living in their own house on a half-acre lot outside of Philadelphia for almost five years, Dolly and her father produced their own food and drink and spent roughly $700 each per year. Thirty years later, Dolly Freed's Possum Living is as fascinating and pertinent as it was in 1978. Tin House is reissuing the survivalist classic with a foreword by David Gates and an afterword by the author. After discussing reasons why you should or shouldn't give up your job, Possum Living gives you details about the cheapest ways with the best results to buy and maintain your home, dress well, cope with the law, stay healthy, and keep up a middle-class facade whether you live in the city, in the suburbs, or in a small town. In a delightful, straightforward style, Dolly Freed explains how to be lazy, proud, miserly, and honest, live well and enjoy leisure. She shares her knowledge for what you do need - your own home, for example - and what you don't need, such as doctors, lawyers, and insurance. Through her own example, Dolly hopes to inspire you to do some independent thinking about how economics affect the course of your life now and may do so in the coming "age of shortages". If you ever wondered what it would be like to be in greater control of your own life, Possum Living will show you and help you do it for yourself. ungekürzt. Language: English. The timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his adventures on Christmas Eve continue to teach an important lesson, even to this day. Author Charles Dickens introduces us to the main character by painting him in a negative light, a selfish and miserly old man who will barely pay enough money to keep his office heated. When Scrooge returns home after work, the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, visits him and tells him that because of the wrongdoing he had done during his life, he has been condemned to walk in his ghost years shackled by chains. He warns Scrooge that the same fate might await him. The ghost leaves, allowing Scrooge to fall asleep. Scrooge is then visited by three different ghosts: first comes the Ghost of Christmas Past, who takes him to revisit various scenarios from his past Christmases, including one event that makes Scrooge shed tears. Next he is taken around by the Ghost of Christmas Present, who shows Scrooge what Christmas will look like this year, and he sees scenes of the Christmas dinner held by his clerk, Bob Cratchit, who has a crippled son. The final visitor is the Ghost of Christmas Yet, and while the two of them are on their journey, they overhear people speaking about a dead man and his assets. Scrooge yearns to know who has passed away, finally figuring out that the deceased man is himself. After the initial shock and a promise to change his ways, Scrooge finds himself back in his bed with a brand-new outlook on life. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Benjamin May. A man with a past Harry Browning was a motherless guttersnipe, and the morning he came across the elderly Alexander Preston, The Viscount Stamford, clinging to a sheer rock face, he didn't believe in fate. But the fates have plans for Harry whether he believes or not, and he's not entirely sure he likes them. As a reward for his bravery, and in an unusual moment of charity, miserly Lord Stamford takes him on. He is taught to read, to manage the vast and crumbling estate, and to behave like a gentleman, but Harry knows that is something he will never truly be. Already running from a dark past, his future is becoming increasingly complex as he finds himself caught in a tangled web of jealousy and revenge.  A feisty young maiden Temptation, in the form of the lovely Lady Clarinda Bow, is a constant threat to his peace of mind, enticing him to be something he isn't. But when the old man dies, his will makes a surprising demand, and the fates might just give Harry the chance to have everything he ever desired, including Clara, if only he dares. And as those close to the Preston family begin to die, Harry may not have any choice. Warning: This book is liable to contain mild swearing and descriptive sex scenes! The Rogues & Gentlemen series can be enjoyed as stand-alone regency romance and historical romance novels, or as part of the wider series.
